  2. Then there is the altered meaning of "well". In the 17th and 18th centuries, a "well tempered" clavier was not tuned exceptionally precisely, but in a "good enough" fashion. Maybe the Founders meant the "well" part of well regulated meant it to mean good enough to work together as a rough militia rather than as a super-regulated organization such as a standing army.

About 7 years ago, a limping person born in the 1920s told my millennial coworker that he was "lame", and my boss couldn't figure out why the man was so depressed as to call himself lame . . . until some of us old fossils filled her in on the meaning of "lame" before it became 1980s vernacular.
