  1. Remember why Gerald Ford lost. He was an appointed VP and a default president after Nixon's resignation. He also pardoned a very ill Richard Nixon. Never mind that this was all legit—nobody asked for Jerry Ford. He was only ever elected to anything by the voters of one congressional district in Michigan. People also perceived Ford as a big, dumb ex-athlete. So, he lost, and he lost to "Jimmy Who?" Parties have only ever had a veneer of democracy, but still, nobody likes to see unelected appointees.
