Eh, my dad literally got nuked 10 years before I was born, and I only had one birth defect. 😜

@freecat1278 I think the last time Congress bothered to declare war was on 12/8/41.

@jpiuvara Okay, then. Two birth defects, now that you mention it.

They were nervous about his potential to be a "warmonger" during the general campaign in 1980. Also, they were horrified that he was age 69. I remember, and Pepperidge Farm remembers

"BOOM!" Nuke drop.

The one my dad was in was called "Apple 2."

@chetpomeroy1399Â Carter was 56 at the time. Trump was 70 at his first election, then FJB added a real WTF factor, at 78.

@chetpomeroy1399 AM 59, here, and increasingly wonder what kind of maniac would ever feel qualified to be president.

My dad was in an above-ground ~29 kt explosion while crouching in a tank fairly close to ground zero. The Joshua trees on the leeward side of his tank were burning, and all the birds and bugs were stunned into silence or dead. Then his group had to attack a hill closer to ground zero, then hike in concentric circles to the partially vaporized detonation tower where some AEC guys were waiting with Geiger counters. Dad lived for 60+ years with no ill effects, but most of his companions died much sooner, from what I could dig up, from leukemias and heart disease. I imagine that his and his buddies' short-term survival showed them what needed to be done with the neutron bomb.

The Russians kept setting off pretty dirty bombs above ground through at least the 1970s. Every few years, the news would report fallout clouds.

My dad was in the one that generated most of the footage of houses and mannequins being blasted. Mom was able to watch it go off live on the Today Show.

@Evan_Bell Yes, Apple 2 shot. Whoever doubts it should have spoken to my father. On the other hand, when I called for his film badge reading in 2005, the military wrote back to say that the records had been lost.

@Evan_Bell What the heck is it with people who think no achievement is as it seems? For example, the moon shots. They think the "know" something that everyone else is too dumb to figure out. I met quite a few of those people when I worked on an acute-care psychiatric unit. 3 – 5 days of a D2 blocker usually cleared that up.

No, but you can spank.

As if our gummint cares about public health.

Just don't order it from Temu; they'll send a firecracker.

As long as the F-35s don't keep breaking.

Why new films? Weren't the old ones convincing enough? My dad was in that test and saw the different types of construction, before and after. Afterward, he saw one tank that was driven halfway into the ground, sideways. Plus noticed how thoroughly vaporized the really close objects had been.

I doubt they'd be doing above-ground testing, though. As I recall, the commies kept detonating above ground. From time to time in the 1970s, you would hear about new fallout passing overhead.

It's been a while, and for the longest time, we only did them underground.
