  4.  @LavishPatchKid  Tend to agree with you. That was why I was happiest in my own office as a department of one. The times I have been dragooned into supervising people were the worst times. Of course, I work in a female-dominated profession--nursing. I'm happiest working with male nurses for the converse of what you said: they shut up, do their work, and usually refrain from lateral aggression. But, I always was more of a tomboy. My husband likes that I think more like a dude, I know. He is a retired NASA engineer. NASA has its share of crap office politics, but it sounds like heaven to me compared to working with scores of females in a hospital. If I could start over, I'd go for engineering.

  5. All it takes is one extrovert with a motor mouth and nothing important to say. 19 years after I sat next to one of those people, my blood pressure rises whenever I think of her. Of course, she ended up being director of that entire 100+ person agency just one year after I left. Figures.

  6. Hey, I would love me some horse blinkers! As an RN, I often work at a "hot desk," out at the nurses' station, with all kinds of distraction from patients and coworkers. Problem is, I usually need to both focus on my work (often requiring calculation or critical thinking) AND keep an eye and ear out for emergent situations. Horse blinkers sound like a luxury, to me.

  7. I've been a cubicle rat, too, and again, human horse blinkers sound like the ticket to me. There is always some "Michael Scott" in cubicle land-usually some female extrovert- who owns the room as soon as she enters it. You hear about her salad she made for lunch, the cute thing her kid said, the last dumbass thing that happened on Real Housewives, her menstrual period, her phone calls, and whatever she's looking at on FB. What I really want is to point my Chief's Special at her and tell her to shut up, but what I can do about it usually involves ear buds and an mp3 playlist. If I have the luxury of not answering phone calls, that is.

  10. Why were the females doing nothing? If I, as a female, take any leadership initiative, I get smeared behind my back by most females, and occasionally mobbed. What I really want for taking leadership initiative is a pay raise, or at least a brass plaque depicting two testicles, 75 stars, and a sunburst.

  11. I'd settle for a worm that rewrites all their mission statements as MAGA rally punchlines. Or replaces certain words in all their product. Say, change the verb "impacting" to "fisting." Or the word "diversity" to "uniformity."

  14. I worked on one hospital unit where we had a mid-morning "huddle." I actually loved the idea. 5 minutes spent standing in a tight circle on the medical floor, giving each other "the bullet." most efficient way to have a meeting, and no room or conference table required.

  15. People wearing headphones tend to turn into heavy breathers. People walking into such a place might become convinced that the entire staff is engaging in obscene phone calls.

  17. HR could always reserve these blinkers for the disruptive and distracted miscreants. Wearing a headset would also then have a shaming component to it, similar to being in stocks. It would signal to your peers, "This person is a knucklehead too dumb not to drink the bathwater. This person does not understand "quid pro quo" and is therefore being subjected to behavioral retraining. Help us keep an eye on this time-thieving nitwit."
