Dr. Bob did not "mix up" the specimens, but I'll tell you--the self-reporting broke down, and we now have way more half-siblings than we ever thought possible. 44 right now, with at least another 44, by my calculations, and much too concentrated in certain geographical locations.

  6. My husband and I used a sperm donor, an anonymous one. We chose by ethnicity and personality/intellect. He was close to top in his college class in a STEM degree. We know him, now, along with 53 of the other kids (thanks to home DNA kits), and he is very bright and eccentric, as well as very nice. The kids appreciate him and each other and feel as if they have their own quirky tribe. My son has the same quick wit as the donor and considers him a friend. It has all turned out well, although I suppose it could as easily have been a disaster.

  12. I stumbled upon an Eckhart Tölle video about a year ago and found his voice soothing, as if he were delivering ASMR . . . but I got tired of the smell of baloney. Honestly, what he said about mindfulness and acceptance made sense, but I've been in that frame of mind for decades, now, and had no real need to hear it, beyond a snippet.

  18. This was my "great guy" of 30 years, too. A perfect sphinx, and absolutely unwilling to discipline the children. In fact, he undermined my efforts. His parents were stoic and used the silent treatment as a punishment. It was mostly a good marriage until it came time to split up, which we did amicably. We remain friends.

My husband said his life "turned to shit" after Katrina, yet there were and still are people grifting it up down there, living from hotel to hotel paid for recovery and reconstruction services that they really don't deliver. The pair in this video probably just enjoyed the anarchy, though.

What I learned again and again over 36 years in EMS and nursing is that the best things are to sequester yourself when you feel ill, and always wash hands and avoid touching your face as a general rule. It is much better to stay home while feeling sick than to wear any kind of mask and expose the public to your bugs. Mask-wearing is courteous, but it hardly compares to staying home while sick for effectiveness. Immunocompromised people can protect themselves in much the same way.

  30. My husband was married to a particularly vindictive BPD for 11 years. It's been 10 years since he's seen her, and I still see panic and trauma responses in him from time to time. It took me 4 or 5 years to stop feeling anger about what she did to his mental and physical health. Now I just feel indifferent about that harridan.

  32.  @davidpetrosky  Stockholm syndrome is not crap. My HS boyfriend was kidnapped by violent guerrillas and held for 60 days in the jungle. He came out of the jungle with a good degree of respect for them, even though he hated their politics and they'd shot one of his coworkers through the head. Decent people at the mercy of others struggle to see decency in their tormentors--it's a survival trait.

  38. One of my best friends has BPD and has done a lot to beat it into submission with DBT. My impression is that she has endless, anxious emotional energy and is very verbal. She tells me, "I have an amygdala the size of a grapefruit, and I have had to work hard to realize that my negative emotions won't kill me."

  46. It's quite the same thing on a behavioral unit, thanks to the mutual population of Cluster Bs. My first year working with them was mostly hardening myself against being used as a doormat. My job entailed a lot of turning on my heel and walking away when a patient got manipulative. It's not easy.

  49. I had a very histrionic-type friend, a mental health counselor, ditch me when I raised my voice to her in a Mexican restaurant. She kept nagging me to repeat her order to the waitress in Spanish to make sure that she got it right and I said, "No! Her English is great!" Kind of glad she did kick me to the curb 25 years ago--she was absolutely exhausting.

Anyhow, you're just 25, and I suspect that, as you age, your struggle to do the right thing will become easier and easier. Good luck, and never stop being upright and admirable.
