  21.  @hh0686  I wasn't comparing. You are the one that brought in an example. But it is a wrong example and entirely different. Foreigners went to CBA to support inter Chinese teams games. They do NOT need to be issued Chinese passports. And they will return as US citizens as an example. in Gu case, she needs to be issued Chinese passport so that she can show it to the Olympics to play the game. End of story. We all know what she and China did.

In fact the whole Team China were probably using the same scheme of given a Chinese passport (only Chinese nationals can have a Chinese passports) and yet allowed to keep their foreign nationality. The team China hockey player Jeremy Smith has confirmed this in an early interview a few years ago

  41.  @hh0686  Briefly read through his info, seemed he played in the China Basketball League in Beijing Ducks. It seems to be their own internal China games and teams are allowed to have limited number of foreigners. Probably all are proper there. It is not an international game
