A massive measure to reduce 'Murican auto transport fossil fuel consumption would be for 'Muricans to stop using a 2.5 ton dick-extension truck to transport a sole 'Murican arse from A to B and start using smaller, streamlined cars, say 0.7 to 1.2 tons pr arse. Spend a few minutes monitoring traffic in the US, and you will see the vast majority of the big, heavy 'Murican cars only have one occupant. What a waste. Actually, by allowing gas prices to go up (which will inevitably happen anyway), this will happen automatically within a decade for pure penny-pinching reasons.
