(Matthew 23:25-28)
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside they are full of greediness and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup and the dish, so that the outside of it may also become clean."
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because you resemble whitewashed graves, which outwardly indeed appear beautiful but inside are full of dead men's bones and every sort of uncleanness. In the same way, on the outside, you appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness."

Let's review Daniel 9:26. "And after the 62 weeks, Messiah will be cut off, with nothing for himself. And the people of a leader who is coming will destroy the city and the holy place."
The prophecy mentioned the destruction of the city and the holy place. Naturally, that referred to Jerusalem and the temple. However, Daniel wrote these inspired words while Jerusalem was already in ruins (Daniel lived in Babylon during the 70-year exile). God didn't inspire Daniel to write, "Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the city and the holy place." The prophecy spoke about "a leader who is coming." That leader turned out to be the future Emperor Titus, who led the Roman army against Jerusalem and its temple in 70 CE. So for "a leader who is coming will destroy the city and the holy place" to be fulfilled, the Jews must first rebuild Jerusalem and the temple after the Jewish exile ended. Then it was destroyed several hundred years later by Titus.
But why is that significant? Notice what the prophecy says before. It says, "after the 62 weeks, Messiah will be cut off." God knew the nation of Israel would reject his son as the promised Messiah. So his appearance would come BEFORE the destruction of Jerusalem and its temple in 70 CE. Why? Because 70 CE marked the end of Israel as God's chosen nation. After that point, the nation was on its own with no support from God.
So based on that, can you still say, "peace will return to Jerusalem when the Children of Israel are set up there?" And "this will be when the Messiah returns?"

@ramelcrandell2032 In 1 Corinthians 10:18, Paul referred to "Israel in the fleshly sense." Later in Galatians 6:15,16, Paul used the term "Israel of God" to show that Israel would cease being those who were descendants of Abraham. In Galatians 3:28, Paul wrote that "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor freeman, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in union with Christ Jesus."
Why is this important? The chosen nation of those who would make up a covenant arrangement to serve as kings and priests was initially supposed to come from "Israel in the fleshy sense." (Deuteronomy 7:6, contrast with Luke 22:29 and 1 Peter 2:9) However, when the nation rejected Jesus as the promised Messiah, God purposed that He would personally choose those to serve as "kings and priests" from among the nations.
Jesus confirmed as much in Matthew 3:9, where he said, "Do not presume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father. ' For I say to you that God can raise up children for Abraham from these stones." If stones had zero connection to Abraham's lineage, how much more so would non-fleshy Israelites whom God has chosen?

@View619 I agree. However, those verses provide a snapshot of world conditions during "the conclusion of the system of things." Notice how 2 Timothy 3:1-5 describes people's behavior during "the last days."
(2 Timothy 3:1-5) "But know this, that in the last days critical times hard to deal with will be here. For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, disloyal, having no natural affection, not open to any agreement, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, without the love of goodness, betrayers, headstrong, conceited, lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God, having an appearance of godliness but proving false to its power."
And Matthew 24:12 adds, "the love of the greater number will grow cold," meaning people would generally have less and less love for God and, by extension, one another.
It's effortless to dismiss what's going on in the world as historical, and that would be valid if it were one or two instances. But consider that all these conditions described in the Bible have occurred worldwide at such an unprecedented rate. Have you ever had passing thoughts that there's something fundamentally wrong going on, but you couldn't quite put your finger on the reason? My comment uses the Bible to answer the why.

@itsmedivine - That's precisely the world Jehovah God is promising. 🙂
NO MORE WAR
(Psalms 46:8,9) "Come and witness the activities of Jehovah, How he has done astonishing things on the earth. He is bringing an end to wars throughout the earth."
NO MORE SICKNESS (INCLUDING PANDEMICS)
(Isaiah 33:24) "And no resident will say: 'I am sick.'"
NO MORE SUFFERING AND DEATH
(Revelation 21:4) "[God] will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."
That's the positive message Jehovah's Witnesses share with their neighbors. There's a beautiful future ahead. However, to enjoy that future, we must try to serve Jehovah because only those who do so will benefit from it.
(Zephaniah 2:2,3) "Before the decree takes effect, Before the day passes by like chaff, Before the burning anger of Jehovah comes upon you, Before the day of Jehovah's anger comes upon you, Seek Jehovah, all you meek ones of the earth, Who observe his righteous decrees. Seek righteousness, seek humility. Probably you will be concealed on the day of Jehovah's anger."
(2 Peter 3:9) "Jehovah is not slow concerning his promise, as some people consider slowness, but he is patient with you because he does not desire anyone to be destroyed but desires all to attain repentance."
(2 Peter 3:11) "Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, consider what sort of people you ought to be in holy acts of conduct and deeds of godly devotion."
(1 John 2:17) "the world is passing away, and so is its desire, but the one who does the will of God remains forever."

@andreidanut8457 In most Bibles, Psalms 83:18 reads, "May people know that you, whose name is Jehovah, you alone are the Most High over all the earth."
And in Isaiah 42:8, God tells us, "I am Jehovah. That is my name; I give my glory to no one else, nor my praise to graven images."
After Jesus was resurrected, he told Mary. "Stop clinging to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father and to my God and your God.'" (John 20:17)
Would you like to know the person behind the name Jehovah? 🙂
