  3. I hated them. They were fragile as hell, easy to get the adjustment gear filled with mud and mang and the optics are dark and hard to see through. The jungle is not a bright and sunny place..and peering through ones butt hole while looking for the people who are looking for you..was not..not a fun time of my life. The later Leatherwood ART scopes that we in the Army used..were far far superior. Still a bit fragile..but nowhere like the Unertil/Lyman scopes. I should mention that on bright ranges in the open..the Unertil/Lyman scopes are quite good..which is why they can be found on several of my competition rifles today. But my combat rifles..much different scopes.

  4.  @Hawk1966  Im in the machining industry..there are thousands of guys who are brilliant AND rough and ready enough to accomplish this. Thousands in an in industry of millions. Unfortunately..they are going to be retiring..and that "thousands" is steadily dropping to "hundreds"...

  6. Absolutely. Watching Ian bash the 240 dollar gun through 2 episodes was a bit much. Its something that many folks can afford. The follow up at the end was somewhat redeeming. No.. I dont own a Hi-point. I can afford better guns, unlike many.

  8.  @edl617  I think 243 would make a GREAT combat round as well, with proper bullet weight. Nice heavy and unbalanced round at 3200 fps would work as well as the 6.5 Grendal/6.8 etc etc. Ive hunted medium game with the .243..deer of course..wild boar with a heavy non varmint style bullet. It kills very well and out to at least 600 meters.

Odd that you should mention that...I grew up in an American/Finn household and after WW2..Finland didnt have a lot of hip slick and cool modern American/high tech goods, so we would ship whatever our Distant Finn family needed to them, and in return they would ship Finn goods back to us in the States. I went to elementary school with a fur coat, Lapp mukluks', hunted and fished with Finnish knives and similar stuff. It made for interesting times when a big ol box would come from Soumi and we would crack it open. As a side note...Id not heard Finn spoken in years and lost most of the pigdin Finn we spoke in our Northern Michigan Finn community. I waltzed into the local (California) DMV one day and got whiplash when I heard an employee with a Finn accent. When it was my turn to get to the window, she was standing there and as I was ruffling through my paper work...said "Hyvää huomenta". I looked up and she was frozen like a Cariboo staring at me...and she said "Vat did you say?" and I repeated it "Hyvää huomenta"....and it was like a dam broke loose as she started spewing high speed Finn at me with an amazed look on her face. I smiled and said "Hitaasti!" and she froze again...and then we both started laughing. I explained to her that that was about all the Finn I remembered, and explained growing up in a Finn/American community and recognized her accent immediately despite it having been almost 50 yrs since leaving there. We have become good friends and always greet each other in Finn when I go in...which drives the usual Mexicans and locals crazy. Good times!! I took a 8 month walkabout in Europe in the mid 70s and visited Finland and our family there. Got to see Sako (family was on the engineering staff) and got to meet Simo Hayha, as a favor from my cousins, after mentioning Id been a 11B-4 in Vietnam. Very nice man. We spent a nice afternoon at his home discussing war.

  10. @managerial conclusions I dont own one..but have shot quite a few Hi-points. Most have been flawless shooters once you run 100-200 rounds through them. No.. they certainly are not 2000 custom guns. But they work. And that is what most owners care about. There have been a crapload of torture tests on them over the years, and have come out quite well. Better actually then some big named firearms.

  13. Like many rifles marked to 1500 meters..the concept of "volley fire" is applied. Got a group of troops heading your way..you simply adjust your sights and send em in their direction. "To whom it may concern" does help keep the other guy scared and less intent on doing the same to you.

  15. They did a might fine job of stacking up Russians like cordwood. My uncle Toivo immigrated to America in 46. I have his M39. Im quite surprised he managed to snag it and bring it to the US. Ive bought others, but take his out and shoot it each December 6th (when I can) (Finnish Independence Day)

  19.  @kimchipig  Unfortunantly in todays machine shops...we have lots and lots of button pressers..but few if any machinists. They get some kid to come and program, then have the nearly minimum wage (often illegal aliens here in the Western states) push the green button and use a Chicom Caliper that hasnt been certified in 5 yrs and only dropped on the floor 10 times this month to check aerospace parts and the owners wonder why the rejection rates are so feaking high. I am NOT a machinist! But far too many of my clients come to me for advise on the best way to make a widget. Sad really...

  20. Rebuild your sword. Colors and paints are readily available. Your sword has little value..so restore it as best you can. Like refinishing an old Win 94 beater.

  22. Ive neve seen a worn out Rem Nylon rifle, and Ive had a crap ton of them. All the models, semi/bolt/leve, brown black and green. And Ive tried to wear out the 66s.

  28. Actually..the welding is well done. It has no more and no less than what is needed. Very minimalistic and very stout. Not going to do well in the sand test..but all and all..its a rifle you can go prone with...very very low. The builder did quite well.

  29. ​​ @zoiders  in which military did they go out of service,...hummm? the 3" was used in Rhodelsia in the late 70s. So I too used both. The 81 in Vietnam, the 3" in Rhodesia.

  32. HellbirdIV  Snicker..20 yrs ago..there were 3 states that readily allowed concealed weapons. Today..there are 49 out of 50 states that have CCW. And the courts have stated the 50th one is in violation. There are more legal firearms in the US than at any other time in American history, (400 to 600 million guns, with our population of 320 million). Im not sure who is paying you to troll this way..but they certainly are not getting their monies worth.

  34.  @1chish  Lol...regulated in 1789 does NOT mean what it does today. It meant properly working. Like a " well regulated clock" or a" well regulated mechanism". It has zero to do with laws and codes. Feel free to google Oxford Dictionary 1790 for its meaning. Just because words change over a century or two.. it doesnt mean that the words at the time of writing have come to mean something different. If so.. you would be going to the barber for medical care tommorow. And "a gay occasion" would have been horrifically different.. lol.

  35.  @williamromine5715  The gentleman is an engineering teacher, who sorta got off on repeating firearms at the Chicago School of Art (I think that was the school) so he is not a "firearms expert".. except from what he has learned about this subject. I give him great! credit for doing the research and the studies and following up on this subject, and for writing the book. He is a typical teacher who isnt laser focused and tends to go off in different directions without someone keeping him on the path. That gives him a good deal of "Cool!" in my view.

  36.  @kennkid9912  the Finn 27,29, and the ultimate M39..were a super improved "rework" of the MNs. Look em up. I have 3 M39s.. one came to America with my Uncle Toivo in 47..the rest were surplus.. and will outshoot my 03 National Matches. Stunningly accurate and handy battle rifles.

  37.  @uguman  The Finns were built using Russian and Soviet rifles. Going back to the Finnish Revolution and later. My mothers side of the family came to America in several waves.. the oldest was from 1879. Ive been to Soumi..went in 1975. Met my cousins face to face for the first time..though we had traded goods after WW2 many many times. Many of my family worked for Sako or Tikka. I met Simo Hayha on that trip as well.

  38. Yes they did. Some 245 or more years ago, with a loss of life in the high hummm 15,000 or so range. On the other hand..since that time...Americans have aided the French on at least 3 occasions, taking somewhere in the order of 2.5 million casualties and coughing up somewhere in the order of 15 Trillion dollars in todays money. So yes the French have been our pals for a very long time..but yes..America has paid far..far..far more than its fair share of the deal....

  42. Mats Nylund  So the criminals then dont pay attention to the law? Odd..Ive been hearing that because of all the regulations..Sweden is so much safer than the US. Yet the criminals dont pay attention to the laws? Funny that. I will say that Sweden is fortunate that is a pretty homogeneous country with only the recent addition of the Somalis to change things. Grenades being tossed in the streets? Odd..even in the US we almost never have a report of a grenade being used illegally..or even possessed. The US of course is now racist because we want to limit angry Somalis and other similar people from gaining entry. ...

  48. @fyaun Hammers have been used in warfare for thousands of years. Both hammer shaped and in the form of maces. All of which are impact weapons, used to crush bone and internal organs. While I appreciate your input..best be reading up on the topic in a bit more depth. I should further note that impact weapons still kill more than rifles and shotguns today.
