  1. The best, cleanest and most healthful water contains considerable dissolved minerals. The human body expects and needs them. The most expensive and best tasting (glass-) bottled water is called mineral water, and it's for a reason. It's no doubt good to filter out many things from water, but not the minerals.

  2. You're ignoring, btw, the fact that in the past year Tesla has cut its prices by $10,000 a car. Its profit margins fell steeply. And the govt. is kicking in a further $7,500. So there's $17,500. Yet you're getting on the internet to complain about greed and a refusal to "pass on the savings😭." Were you born and raised in a Warsaw Pact country five decades ago? Or are you just a grad student somewhere?

  3.  @briom1425  The US doesn't "subsidize" Canada one g.d. red cent. Not one. Canada buys more stuff from the US than anyone else. We're your best customer in the world. In return, you voluntarily buy a little more. That's not a "subsidy." And by the way, 9 countries including Ireland (!) have a larger trade surplus with the US than Canada's puny one.

  7. Not entirely. Govts. give numerous incentives and other nudges. But yeah, they don't run the nation's companies from Washington as China runs theirs from Beijing. Did you want to come right out and suggest that? If so, keep in mind that concentration of that much power in one place means kissing liberty goodbye.

  12. Where I live food prices either drifted down slowly or trailed inflation for many years prior to the pandemic. Food absolutely became more affordable, and quality gradually rose too. (And no, I didn't just have a rising income.) That went double for most other consumer goods, thanks to productivity gains in the Far East, as well as perhaps a stronger dollar. I think inflation on this side of the Pacific over that period was all in accommodation costs. And cars.

  14. Ah, but there's more: many other countries will piggy-back on the Trump tax hikes. If Canada's oil suddenly costs $90/barrel instead of $70, why would others just keep selling at their present price? They're not stupid. They'll jack their price up to about $85 to soak up an easy extra profit. These tax hikes are an own-goal by the US.

  15.  @netnomad47  Rainwater is absolutely crawling with microbes: bacteria, viruses, amoebas and other protozoa. Plus water vapor can only condense around an airborne particle of dust, dirt or pollution, so rain is also filthy in that sense. Great for your lawn, trees, bushes and flowerbeds though.

  17. I don't trust any of these people, including the daycare-worker/Ivy-League-graduate-sounding narrator. The ones we see look like weirdos; the ones we can see or hear or both, pronounce a lot of their words strangely. (E.g. the new noun "IN-stall.") Lastly, I don't trust CNBC. I scour it for free info every day and find its feature-writing wracked with purple-haired New-Puritan points of view. This whole thing smacked of the NYT-hit-piece ethos.

  31. You don't get it. Tesla, being really well conceived and managed, is the only maker presently able to make money. The other makers are in no way being greedy. Certainly not. They lose a fortune on every EV sold. When Tesla slashed prices by $10k a car (while continuing to make billions in profit), they all started throwing in the towel. They can't compete. If they persist (except on a tiny scale) it will mean bankruptcy.

Prices peaked a year after the last trillion-plus gusher of government stimulus. The direct effects are still resounding; the indirect effects will last decades.

  46. Because most of those increases happened before a year ago, before May 2023. Then inflation fell, but lower inflation doesn't mean an improved standard of living. It certainly doesn't mean lower prices. High inflation is sort of like a period of illness causing you to age faster. When you get better or are cured you're not going to get five years younger. You'll just go back to aging more normally. Aside from that I will point out that the round of high inflation between mid-2021 and mid-2023 was quite concentrated in basic essentials needed every day.
