It's fairly predictable that the autonomous regions at some point will vote to join Russia, similar to what Crimea did. The United States is obsessed with the idea that borders never change. That's why any attempt to "maintain territorial integrity" in Afghanistan was doomed for failure. It's an artificial nation state created by outsiders ignoring the historical, cultural, religious, language and ethnic differences among the inhabitants.

I am something of an anomaly as I still have operated a website for 20 years without advertising. I'm not hiding my identity, but I can very easily see things coming where the FCC will want to license website ownership so the government can force your website to be pulled down if you are expressing opinions they don't agree with.

If Ukraine really wanted to join Europe, they should have started the conversion from Soviet Gauge to standard gauge a long time ago. It probably is one of the sticking points preventing the approval. The EU has very strict guidelines about how passenger trains are operated and having to be interchangeable with similar train control systems. There is still one Soviet gauge railroad across Poland, but it is there fore transporting minerals, not a general purpose interconnected railway.
