Going back in ancient history, Russia fought Turkey for control of Crimea and won
5
@snakerstran9101 it was made of kryptonite! Not sure with color though.
5
President Biden also hammered this in his farewell speech where he went out of his way to say that he was the one responsible for not Trump
5
This is consistent with my prediction all along, that the river will become the defensible dividing line between Russia and Ukraine. Kherson is on the wrong (North) side of the river. Creating an enclave like East Berlin inside enemy controlled territory is not realistic. Hopefully Ukraine uses a little restraint in not punishing the civilians while they evacuate, or those that choose to remain.

The mayor of Kyiv is currently talking to the World Economic Forum
5
The original Rand corporation study from 2019 said that a war in Ukraine would be unwinnable because of the logistics problems and Russia having a short supply line to reach eastern Ukraine
5
But he is diverse!

Russia already has plans to build a pipeline connecting their Western oil and gas reserves that are near Europe with the pipelines in Asia serving China. All they have to do is reverse the direction of the pipelines in the West end of Russia to flow towards pipelines to Asia. Without interference from environmental groups or indigenous peoples, pipelines can be built very quickly. When the United States was concerned about German U-boats sinking oil tankers, United States built oil pipelines from Texas to the Northeast in less than 2 years, realizing it was a national security issue. So far the Biden administration does not understand this.
5
It was a trial balloon! 🎈

Joe Biden's name is not on the ballot in New Hampshire. Could that be to encourage Democrats to vote for Nikki Haley instead of Trump in the open primary?
5
Because at some point in the future, Russia might need them to move West, especially the railroad bridges that are built to Soviet gauge
5
If the Russians only took out the power substations, Ukraine still has diesel locomotives. They’ve been aggressively trying to convert everything to electric, Including buying Soviet gauge locomotives from General Electric in the United States… Perhaps more importantly, Ukraine uses the former Soviet rail gauge, while Europe’s trains are standard gauge. There is an important exception. There is one Russian gauge route that still goes across Poland from Hrubieszów to Sławków, which could allow the Russian military to move their equipment into Poland if Ukraine falls and the notion that Russia might invade Poland comes true.

They described it as a "depiction", which could mean anything up to and including deepfake. That works so well with the Gulf of Tonkin
4
The firebombing of the civilians in Tokyo killed an estimated 100,000 people
4
Aircraft carriers are too big to go through the Panama Canal, so West Coast based carriers will have to go through the Suez Canal to reach the Mediterranean (or around the tip of Africa if the Suez Canal is shut down)
4
Chess is the national sport of Russia
4
Rare Earth minerals are not rare in the ground. They are rare because of the difficulty in refining them into the finished product.
4
It seems unlikely that Ukraine has any airplanes capable of dropping paratroopers
4
Natural causes?
4
I think Donald Trump just declared economic war on the entire world

Queen to rook 8

I hope the second update covers Henry Kissinger leaning on zelensky to back off, and turkey's threats against its Southern neighbors. Enjoy Cyprus while you can
4
Maybe the UN can issue a stern admonishment!
4
While watching the border crossing into Poland, it was pretty clear that local Polish people were helping themselves to the humanitarian aid, and ukrainians that live near the border were coming across to get free stuff then head back home. But for the most part, people were just walking by and not taking anything.
4
Well, historically the border between Poland and Germany has been a bit fluid
4
How fuelish! 🤡
4
Perhaps we should change the name of the Department of Defense back to its old name - the Department of War
4
For those who don't get the connection immediately, Siemens provided assistance to the US and Israeli governments to allow the stuxnet worm to damage Iran's Uranium centrifuges. It is not unreasonable that at some point the United States government would do something similar to cripple Russia. That might be why Russia was demanding lots of documentation about the repairs.
4
I don't see how you're going to freeze the front line when neither party will agree to it
4
The national sport in Russia is chess. A discovered check is very unpleasant to have happen to you
4
There would be lots of applause from many places!
4
This story that the Russians are forcing civilians to leave the eastern part of Ukraine may just be that they want to protect them from what they know is coming
4
Who is on first base
4
The first update was pulled down about 5 minutes after it was posted
4
Kind of like how the passport of the 9/11 leader was found intact on the ground at the base of the World trade center
4
@NinaAndCoco assuming that they mean shifting production of the German tanks, that means tearing out the stamping presses and moving them to the United States. If you do that, they're never going back. Not only do you have the assembly operation, but you have all of the related industries making components. Either they all have to move to the United States also, or now you're talking about having to put parts on ships to cross the Atlanta Ocean. Those ships would be very susceptible to attack if we literally wind up on war footing.

Is she allowed to be out in public without being accompanied by a male relative?
4
I thought it odd that the UK is doing this to help out Europe. I thought the UK didn’t want to be part of the EU
4
One of the targets near Kiev is the factory where they manufactured the anti-ship weapons. It's amazing that a weak country like Ukraine had the capability to design and independently manufacturer an anti ship missile that's more sophisticated than the Russians.
4
I am not buying the "like him" part at all
4
@briancarno8837 you can see Russia from a front porch in Canada! More seriously, eventually Russia and Canada are going to get into it over access to minerals under the Arctic Ocean and an ice-free Northwest Passage.
4
Imagine the VP debate with JD Vance versus Kamala Harris
4
The biggest long-term effect of this conflict is the Russians are learning very much about effective tactics against NATO weapons systems at a relatively low cost
4
I hope the Ukrainian troops standing out in the barren fields have lots of good winter clothing. The Russians have no idea how to fight in cold weather
4
Part of what's going on is the one of the religious factions in Israel refuses to allow their children to be drafted
4
Perhaps the Dutch people did not like the idea of the government shutting down farms during rising food prices only because the EU wants to reduce nitrogen emissions
4
Probably targeting the Crimean bridge again
4
The military term for this is standoff. If your artillery can accurately hit further than other side's, the other side cannot inflict any damage if it is an artillery-only battle.
4
Troops entering through Belarus would be headed to Kiev and Western Ukraine. That would not be happening except for the attempt to destroy the Crimean bridge. The ante has been raised. Remember that russia, belarus, and Ukraine all share the same Soviet railroad gauge, which is not used by the EU. I have long believed the Russians were not blowing up the railroads and anticipation of a full scale invasion via the railroads
4
Blinkin’s grandfather lived in Kyiv, Ukraine while he was working, establish the framework of the country that would become Israel. It’s quite possible he does speak Ukrainian.
