  1.  @justanaveragebalkan  I do think more YouTubers really should pick up the mantle of showing cool software more, rather than just 'here is this obscure feature that 10 people requested for KDE that is now implemented...' how many people are looking for the feature to enable HDR on their desktop? It doesn't even work correctly in Windows. Getting others to talk about any software you make seems really random.

  2. @justanothercomment416  macOS is a cobbled together mess from NeXT Step and Finder from macOS 7-9. I wouldn't say it is leap years ahead of windows. They both currently have virtualization, but Windows comes with it, Apple locks their hypervisor up so you have to use third party software to use it. Explorer still seems more usable than Finder (it is my biggest complaint about macOS). But outside of them deprecating APIs constantly, and making old software no longer work, Apple has not really changed the fundamental usage of macOS since the very first versions of OS X.

  4. @uncrunch398  Ha, I still remember on my 2mb Mega STe, I had a document that was slightly over 1mb in size... all of the word processors I tried to open it with would crash... except one. An Emacs port! It opened the document flawlessly. I did eventually upgrade it to 4mb of RAM. I just set it back up, yesterday. Atari ST's GEM, is just so much cleaner and easier to use than modern operating systems... especially on the Falcon, it is a thing of beauty.

  8. The secret has always been... more OEMs giving the choice. The 'year of desktop linux' is when you can walk into Best Buy and see Linux on Laptops sitting next to Windows and Macs. The closest I have seen to this was a boxed set of Ubuntu on a shelf in one, but that was years ago. Ubuntu's NIH and snaps is doing a lot of damage to that potential.

  11. @TempCrap-nn4cm the whole story isn't public, but the maintainer for KDE quit due to some accusations of being white (from what I could tell of what was published, some disaggreements or something.) But that is why kde 6.x hasn't been added to sid yet. I went looking around, and it was because the maintainer of the packages quit after doing it for many years due to some comment he made or something. I wondered if someone could do more digging into why it all went down...

  13. ​@CommanderRiker0 Yeah, this is the stuff that makes Gnome / KDE instantly add any printer on the local network. The real question is... why does it need a daemon that is listening on port running as root? A daemon that does outward scans makes sense, but why would it need something to connect to? Printers should also be configurable by users rather than root.

  14.  @Gunstick  I'm currently on Garuda Linux, which is arch based. cupsd runs as root. There is no lp user. Now if you've configured lpd, which from my understanding is ancient, then sure, it's probably running as the lp daemon. It all depends on the distribution, but most these days are likely to be running cupsd. The details of the exploit are online, so assuming you haven't already patched whichever distro you're running, you can test it out for yourself.

  23. ​@arpnsh Debian does this. You pick the DE you want upon install with the netboot image. Or of course, you can pick none at all. Though, I suppose for this crowd it should be Devuan I speak of, because the blue hairs have their claws into Debian too.

  24. @chrisxdeboy  Gnome is technically themable, just not in a way anyone wants to try and theme it anymore. They kind of took over GTK being an individual thing, which is good/bad depending on how you think of it. Also, the problem with KDE themes and executing scripts is a nasty thing that needs to be dealt with... I still wish either KDE would do an 'simple mode' or Gnome would do a 'advanced mode' option to meet somewhere in the middle. KDE is slowly getting to the point where it isn't a crazy mess of options, gnome flips back and forth between them thinking they know best, and letting users actually do what they want... ha, if I knew how to code worth a damn, I would just turn the Amiga workbench into a DE and be done with it...

  28. ​ @entelin Who knows, I know you can get some that specifically have a 'printer sharing' function built i to them, but your average ISP supplied router doesn't have this functionality, or if it does, it doesn't have it on by default. There are some people who don't have a very complicated network and may set up their printer directly to their router so their other computers can connect to it. Back to it being like fax machines, parallel printers are more secure!

And then make whatever event it is to be all about him. This is exactly what it seems like for all of these open source projects and they come in with the Code of Cinduct to basically say, "I am here, and you have to accept me, or else!" This is what happens when bullies don't do their job, and they think they deserve to be winners / included based on their existence rather than their skill level.

  30. I still pull up Synaptic now and again to poke around stuff. But it used to be my go to for learning about new software! I would run Debian Unstable, and update apt through Synaptic to see all the new stuff packaged for Debian! I kind of miss doing that... haven't had time to for the past few years...

  31. What the hell? Yeah, sideloading had a very specific definition of the method of installing software. Usually it required adb and connected up to a computer. Hence, 'loading a program from something off to the side.' Similar to downloading software...

  33. @YadraVoat  Ha, I have never had that issue any Linux system. I think even the ST and Amiga could track such things. Probably my biggest complaint on that level is that Linux and other unix systems by default properly support case sensitivity. You get warnings when trying to enable it for macOS.

  37. I have been playing a bit with Samsung Internet Browser on my phone. I like 'em. I guess I am going to be fully removing Firefox and using one of the forks. Firedragon seems pretty sweet.

  42. @Jacob6853  I like my IIGS more than the m1 macbook max. Coming from a Linux background I mostly expect so much of your normal software to just be included in a repo and fetchable via command... you can get brew, but it usually compiles things. And then some just normal stuff is paid for apps.

  43. @justanothercomment416  Ha, Windows would be way better if it had ANY of that ancestry. I think it has some VMS in it. It only recently got some Windows love. Each of Windows or Macs have their issues, and neither are leap years better than the other. Even on security, both have done some boneheaded things (Linux userspace is included in that). From a usability standpoint, Windows has generally (outside of 8 and 11) been better than macOS as far as not really changing much between major releases. MacOS is garbage in this regard, while the overall usage is about the same, your applications will just randomly stop working because Apple decided they wanted to make a new API or architecture that breaks compatibility. They literally dropped support for everything 32bit. None of the big 3 have done this except them.

I don't know, both tge pro palestine grops and the climate activists are both the type of assholes who would try and ruin everyone else's happiness because they have whatever anxiety issues that make them think throwing stuff on paintings and historical landmarks or defacing monuments is going to do anything but make normal people want to beat the hell out of them... sorry, I may still be pissed off about the morons throwing stuff on Stonehenge!

  46.  @Gunstick  cups-browsed absolutely runs as root. You do know that anything under port 1000 needs some special stuff to not run as root, right? There isn't a need for privilege escalation, the privileges is already there because cups-browsed runs AS root. So you add a printer to it, that printer ppd file can have an executable command in it that foomatic-rip will execute... as root. This is likely why VINCE suggested this was a 9.9.

  47. @Gunstick  Right. I haven't checked Ubuntu, but Debian appears to be similar there, though it does look like lpd exists there, cupsd still runs as root. I just figured this all matches the Windows print spooler also being trash for security.

  49. Garuda defaults to Firedragon, a Floorp fork. Assuming you are using a flashier version. Stuff like the xfce one uses Firefox.

  50. Ha, I couldn't even believe this was a thing... went and verified the Gnome code of conduct. Yup, that bit about reverse-isms is actually in there... They used to claim the Code of Conduct was just a "don't be a dick" agreement. But I knew they were trouble even back when they started popping up. What they really meant was, "don't be a straight white man."
