I'm still try'n to figure out why the hell I shouldn't oft my beloved old E46 for one of these....tho I have already decided I have to have one. :D Frankly off the line is trivial for me, I'm one to be gentle, no banged gears, no dropping the clutch, burnouts bore me, and save the abuse for the curves.

  6. FANTASTIC Review. I LOVE that engine, shopping for one of these as I type, still happy with my old 330ci but I think I have to have one of these. Frankly I don't care if it's the 'perfect track car', better if it's not really. Rod bearings are my only major hesitation here. (Update: I bought my own 2011 E92 last Saturday...it's an ABSOLUTE GEM, but what do I know, old car is a Dinan E46 330ci for last 15 yr.s, but it's still a capable, reliable, fun machine, I thought I'd hate the old one after the new but it's still a pleasure too and keeps the miles off the E92)

  8. Yeah right. You try to live with a 1960's truck even for a solid day in traffic, fun for a few minutes then it becomes utterly stressful and hazardous. I know--I drove a 1966 Chevy 1-ton, overhauled with front disc brakes, well maintained, until 2000, it's no picnic. Frankly they are dangerous on the road.

  10. Live BENEATH YOUR MEANS and save a little every week, $10 or $20 at a time is all it takes just keep doing it. How many living hand to mouth spend a few thousand every yr. for non-essentials, that's just a fancy coffee and bagel every day say.

  14. I remember a similar sentiment back in 1980's when everyone was lamenting the "end of the muscle car", well now horse power has tripled and everything else performance related is FAR superior as well, brakes, suspension, features and safety.

I didn't like that I was, in effect, caring several worthless union "workers" on my shoulders so I put every spare penny and minute into my skills and equipment starting when I was 20, never looked back and raise my wages every yr.

  18.  chief tp  Smart Car? If it works for you that's all that matters. But it's dumb car for most of us, too small, mediocre fuel economy, not durable, piss poor performance, bad ride..... I like small cars, never owned anything bigger than BMW 3 series, but I don't want something that can't perform, stop go and turn proficiently....Smart can't do it. Deal breaker especially considering it's going to ping pong off any other vehicle it crashes into, SAFE for it's size, very respectable crash characteristic but still scary. I'd sooner ride a crotch rocket, at least then I can dodge.

  19. Look at fuel price chart and see how foolish that is. The average price for gasoline in America over the last 100 yr.s is around $2.40/gallon (in today's dollars) and those dollars were a lot harder to come by 50 yr.s ago. Also note how fuelish SUVs dominate the landscape, the worst fuel economy vehicles (not to mention crap driving experience) a available are selling the best.

  21.  @ItsTheNada  I agree. I have desire to swap one of my old BMW manuals for one but most ppl don't really care about that too much. Look at the terrible trash piles they choose: hay wagons (aka pickups) Escalades, SUVs, most of which are barely road worthy and a hazard to society. Otherwise respectable but boring econoboxes.

  22.  @ItsTheNada  Hehehe. I live in a rural area (can't tolerate daily heavy traffic) so it's not uncommon to recognize a random vehicle or person. I noticed one of those ridiculous punked cars with 30 deg. of negative camber all 4 wheels a week back, looked like a lot of time and money invested to scrap that car with fancy paint, etc. A few days later I see same car sitting on side of highway with at least one tire shredded, what the hell would you expect running on one corner of tire at speed?? (Can you imagine what that must handle like?...I can't but guessing it's a hazard on the highway) Wanted to stop for a fun photo but was driving 1-ton service truck which doesn't encourage unplanned stops or maneuvers.

  23. Ppl are wealthier than ever, the fact that we are even having this conversation demonstrates that. When I was a kid everyone strove to have A CAR that served it's basic function. Very few even thought about a sports car, they were anomalies, rarely seen on the road...a doctor or successful businessman.

  24. Wade H Bullshit. It's never been easier and inflation has been near zero for a decade now. Yes wages have lagged but this is America, GO OUT AND CREATE YOUR OWN DAMN JOB! No one owes you anything. We haven't seen serious inflation problems since almost Jimmy Carter, you may not be old enough to remember that era but I am. "They can't save a couple hundred bucks" but they sure can sit around online, watch TV, play with their expensive phones constantly..... Do you have any idea how hard it is to find a worker who is actually honest and worth a damn?

Plenty of high paying jobs have been left unfilled for many years as there aren't enough qualified folks to take them. And if you don't like what's out there, quit whining and create your own darn job. I started my own biz when I was 20 and never looked back.

  28. elton john YOU nailed it. Obese Americans are the norm today, it used to be the exception, it's all about diet and lifestyle. When I was in grade school there were exactly TWO fat kids in my entire class. Now it's half of them.

  44. Interesting note: 10W 60 doesn't have higher heat capacity than other motor oils, it must be more about the 9 liters of oil not the grade. Rod bearings--just price it in and get it done (haven't done mine yet) and for me a DIY swap out throttle actuators for a half days work and few hundred bucks. (Remember that heavy metal replacement gear options will slow throttle response a little if you go that rout...rotational inertia matters) If $2500 for a rod bearing upgrade is too much then you can't even replace tires on this car enough. $800 for 2 rear common good tires. Not an econbox tho it can take kids to school. :D

  49.  chief tp  If it works for you that's all that matters, at least it doesn't pose a serious threat to other motorists. I wouldn't bother with one given their lousy performance and poor ratings coupled with the fact that I want a car that I can carve up a canyon, enjoy for long road trips, etc. I believe the CTS is a respectable car, at least by American standards, a little light on power and cheesy interior tho, right? I bet it's quite nice.

  50.  chief tp  It's supposed to be a 'sporty' car, no? I think it's way over 200 but these days it's not competitive without at least 350 plus IMO. Isn't the interior cheapy plastics? You MIGHT be able to fix the sunroof leaks by simply scrubbing down the rubber gaskets with the right conditioner.
