@rpm1796 the Golden Hind is the beginning of lower forecastles and reduced stern-sections in combination with an improved artillery, which caused better sailing abilities. So the Golden Hind set new standards. In the case of the Hood, which is one of the most beautiful British battleships, we do not find so many inventions. But Hood differs lightyears from those ugly Ducklings of the Nelson class BBs.

@ijohneb very simple, fascism comes from "fasces", a weapon of the bodyguards protecting the Roman upper-class-people. It represents an imperial approach. And do you think the Empress of India was elected in India? The main "fasces" (a plurale tantum) of the British Empire was the Royal Navy.

@wstavis3135 Watch the beam, the curvature is decisive for a warship's beauty. The Scharnhorsts have a max. beam of 30 meters, the Iowas one of 33 meters & Bismarck one of 36 meters, means Bismarck could not enter the Panama-Canal (the floodgates had 35 meters). In the midsection the hull of the Iowas is flat, constructed for the transpassing of the Canal. But this lack of curvature means a lack of beauty. The constructed curvature of German warships made them to the most beautiful. No one can exclude a personal, undefined emotion. For example i like the KGVs, i do not know why.

@generalwadehampton.2578 The Hippers are very different from each other. PE was the longest of all Hippers, looks more slim, 212 meters meant, she could not develop so much speed, 32,2 knots. Blücher was the shorty with 202 meters & the widest beam of 22 meters & developed 32,8 knots.

Yes, Richard Bolitho experienced the worse situation in the war of independence and mentioned it. In this time Britain survived by the political inability of the french and spanish kings. The Royal Navy would have fought without any chance to win a battle in the channel against a combined allied fleet at this time. And Nelson era it is called. But during the Napoleonic wars there were no real opponents, every british post-captain could have led the Brits into battle, so this was not Nelson's performance, he stole only the tactics from Duncan and sold it as his own. It was the performance of British seamen and officers who made it. When Nelson met a real opponent, as at Tenerife, he lost easily and foolish. And Nelson's envy against more talented officers, as Sidney Smith, ruined the reputation of those officers and caused a loss for Britain. In reality Nelson was only a lucky poser.

@jacktattis The only real victory of Nelson was the battle of Copenhagen, there were no other tactics available. The formation at Trafalgar was invented by Duncan at Camperdown in 1797 & at Trafalgar & the Nile he defeated frenchie amateurs, because Boney promoted the wrong flag-officers. At the Nile Brueys sent half of his crews to fetch water, knowing that Nelson was searching for him. He should have demand water delivery by the army. Brueys anchored only with bow-anchors at Aboukir, instead to order springs. During the battle was enough time for the idiot Villeneuve, who commanded the rear, to bring a spring on 2 ships, what would have been enough to destroy one British ship after another firing full broadsides into British bows. Or he could have sent crews to improve the the reload time of engaged ships. But bonehead Villeneuve did nothing, except to escape. When Nelson met pros at Land f.e. at Tenerife he failed pitiful, losing an arm & an eye-sight.

@jannegrey I would like to counter your statement. Of course, the Hipper-class is THE prototype of a fast heavy cruiser. The only misconstruction, i admit to Drach, is the range of such big ships, more than 200 meters length. They consumed all 3 much more fuel than expected. All of them had problems with their propulsion and the closeness of their propulsion-rooms. PE was the biggest of them (212 meters) and made the slowest speed of 32,2 knots. Blücher, with the widest beam of 22 meters instead of 21,2 of PE and Hipper, sailed with a top-speed of 32,8 knots. The fuel consumption and the short range were really not proper enough for such a kind of ship.

The Frenchies built better 4-gun-turrets, the rice-steamers and the cowboys built better 16-inch-guns. Hood's 15- inch guns worked well. Never change a winning team.

@KatyushaLauncher All KGV-class ships suffered by and faced 4-gun-turret-probs. French-4-gun-turrets were constructed as 2 in one, which provided French bbs with more safety and a little bit more weight. The major disadvantage of broader 3- or 4-gun-turrets ist the shifted weight by turning the ship, similar to the barycentre of over-firing turrets.

The German admiralty was a bunch of cowards. It is useless to build battleships and to avoid the use as battleships. Some officers of the Kriegsmarine argued against an exchange from 11 inch to 15 inch guns.

The cowboys were idiots. HMS Invincible made at Jutland a direct hit into the propulsion room of the light cruiser SMS Wiesbaden. The same happened to Scharnhorst at the Northcape in WWII. In a fast torpedo boat or a destroyer such losses are not so heavy than in the case of battleships. And no one can cheat physics. The biggest fast battleships (or battlecruisers, does not matter )with a seagoing hull were Hood, Vanguard & the Bismarcks. The US fast battleships & the Yamatos, with their long straight hulls (to store their monstrous propulsions) were all failed constructions like the idea of fast torpedo-BBs.

I have a lot of other sources quoting Victory was a slow cow. Anyway, Frenchies were usually bigger, heavier and faster than British ones. The speed-situation improved when the Brits added very early the copper-plates. Usually the Spaniards built the best ships at all in the 18th century, but their crews, and more their officers were miserably trained.

@Drachinifel Hope, you will be patient, all my books are packed in boxes, because i have to renovate my flat. And my flat is complicated. Of course, i read sources, that HMS Victory was fast. A major problem is, that we cannot rely on painted pictures. If this would be true, that Victory was some knots faster than other British man'o'wars then Victory had to sail always with reduced sail in the line of battle, anywhere at Trafalgar or St.Vincent. Usually those ships were slow which had after a long time of service a lot of seaweed on the hull, which reduced the speed. On copper-plates this process of growing seaweed on the hull was exceeded, so the ships faster. On battle-sketches of Trafalgar in the lee-line led by Collingwood on Royal Sovereign usually we recongnize more gaps in the line caused by different speed of Collingwood's ships.

Without try and error we would still row our dragon boats. The Germans lost one and the Brits 2 major ships by friendly ramming, as a result of the battle of Lissa, failures of the admiralties.

@2adamast Yes, Admiral Hipper & Glowworm rammed each other in 1940, Glowworm sunk and Hipper was damaged. A brave action by Lieutenant Commander Gerard Roope. But Roope would have been more valuable, if he would have survived, than a damaged Hipper.

Fine report of Drach! The only other point of view to enforce a sea-born melee in the Pacific, was, to attack the US mainland. And on the US west-coast there are/were not so many maritime hotspots to blockade, beside Panama. The japanese way in reality was not concludent. As the French in the Napoleonic wars, they did not really intended to destroy the enemy's fleet. The US navy could always dodge IJN-operations and focus their own. The oil-wells in Texas must have been the major strategic target of the Japanese. But the Japanese waged war to keep their face, not to win.

@ScienceChap Approximatly around 60 Mio. Mao-victims are quoted in the first edition of "Le livre noir du communisme" by Stéphane Curtois & colleagues. Following editions reduce the large amounts of communist-victims, probably the political pressure on those historians was too eminent. Whether Hitler, nor Stalin nor Mao could beat the US Americans and the Brits in numbers. Those bad guys knew that they will have not so much time to do it.

@ScienceChap I will not defend any murder at all. I am German, so I am responsable, what happens and happened in my country. In colonial aspects the Germans guilt is relatively limited. Bismarck was against colonies at all, because the rest the Germans could occupy was more cost-intensive than any yield available to get out of it. About the Nationsalsocialists is to say, that the decided end of January 42 the "Endlösung" (final solution), when it became clear that this war was lost. Churchill did not care about the political leadership in Germany at all. He fought the Germans, check his quotes. The most famous is .. " we slaugthered the wrong pig". About China is to say that since Deng Xiaoping took over at the end of the 70s, the communist party of China is only called communist party formally. In reality the Chinese are since Deng Nationalsocialists and unfortunately they win against the degenerated West.

After the German cashbox is nearly empty, not only the Germans are the bad guys, now the former colonial powers, where Germany does not really belong to, are in charge to pay. The most funny movement is BLM. Do you think the Blacks in the US want really to exchange their living conditions with african ones? I cannot believe it.

@danf9721 This point of view will not be honoured on this channel. The Ex-Allied or Entente writers love to write in glory and white-washing. The Germans got those colonies nobody wanted. Needless to say that Bismarck was against it, because the German investment was much bigger than any returns. Hongkong traded Opium, Xingdao is still producing German beer. German missioners gave Black-Africa the only existing cursive language, Kishuaheli. Former German southsea islands are still living from German plantations. It is a logical conequence. If there are no commodities in former colonies a built of infrastructure is necessary. The major failure of the Brits is, that they destroyed Europe & their Empire in the 20th century in favour of the US.

Naval warfare is the most important warfare at all. And there is obviously a lesser use of propaganda, because the action has a direct access to any political intention. My favourite author is Helmut Pemsel, still living at the age of 92. So, of course naval art is so important not to forget. The Hood-painting is really an epic one.

I have 2 questions, Hood was counted as a wet ship, not only caused by the freeboard on the quarterdeck. On the last picture of Hood, taken from Prince of Wales, we see Hood covered in foam cascades, when Hood rushed to the Denmark Strait. Same story concerning the Scharnhorsts. Could You please name us comparable ships, which were not "wet"? I have another question aside of Your report. Why the Germans built such vulnerable turrets with 90 degrees sidewalls? British turrets were much more protected by their shape.

You ignore the real problems of the Germans in sea-warfare in both WWs, lack of tradition, stupid flag-officers & some overchallenged commanders as Langsdorff, who should had remain with his beloved destroyers. The performance of the Brits hitting Germans even to hit Bismarck in her final engagement was really bad, an underperformance at point blank range targeting a gigantic sitting duck. British shooting became very good with radar steered fire, as You can see in the battle at the NorthCape, 1943. Langsdorff was too stupid to run like Sturdee, when the enemy is closing in or not to sail home, when the radar only reaches 6 seamiles in midwinter, risking the ship like the idiot Bey did it. The German seawarfare-highcommand (SKL) was even too stupid to calculate the correct demand of fuel-supply. Bad British heavy units were the easiest targets to sink them. But there is a need to hit them decisively. The Germans had simply too many Beattys and no real punishment for failure in battle, but worse. The Germans promoted their slackers & suckers, sent the heroes home like Marschall.

Tiger is a very pretty ship among the Brits, only the bridge-tower a bit too forward, and the distance of the 2 aft-turrets scratch a little bit her beauty. Drachifinel's hypothetic debate about the ability of Scharnhorst's and Gneisenau's 11 inch guns in the point of view of the German admiralty might not hit the point. Raeder and Hitler feared the loss of prestige in the case that one of those battlecruisers would be sunk in a open battle. This was the major reason about the order to avoid engagements against british capital ships. Not everyone shared this opinion. Admiral Marshall was sent home to train the midshipmen, because he voted to attack any convoy even with heavy escorts. When the coward Lütjens replaced him in operation Berlin ordered by the loser Raeder, the squadron met a convoy excorted by Ramillies. Captain Hoffmann of Scharnhorst closed up to lure Ramillies away from the convoy to give Gneisenau the chance to sink the convoy, but the coward Lütjens signalled him back. Here the destruction of the Glorious on the propaganda-film Wochenschau-motion-pictures. Bismarck's final battle is never an argument, because this was a clay pigeons schooting. The evaluate a battleship, which is not to steer and crawling with 7 knots, means an evaluation of an already sunk ship.

@20chocsaday The Kaiser was more or less an idiot, a psycho in a lifelong carneval, changing 4 times a day the phantasy-uniform. The British royals are not British, they are Germans, like the French nobility, too. The Brits suffered even more under insanity than the Kaiser & his comrades. The thinking that a war among Europeans including the island-apes from the British isles, would solve any problems of competition ruined the (British & other) empire(s) and the entire Europe in favour of the US. Later on, Hitler could no believe it, that the British idiots repeat the same mistake a second time. So, in any result, we are able to watch British policy of this era. This policy never served king & country, but for the US. Now the Europeans lick those dirty cowboy-boots 24/7.
