@bowez9 That's not unfair. I tend to favor the self-defender's rights a lot more than the provoker's, but other people might disagree.
3
@bowez9 There I don't agree. Being especially capable of defending oneself does not, to me, reduce someone's rights in doing so.

That suit looks like someone skinned a 70s couch. I was really skeptical of the idea that the robbery was a fraud because that seems to me a really stupid way to do that fraud. I'm not firmly on the fraud side at this point, but now it's sounding a lot more likely.
3
The first part seems straightforward: "Victims" could be understood to imply that there is a perpetrator. "Rioters", "looters", or "arsonists" is a bit more iffy to me tbh. I don't think they are relevant unless Rittenhouse saw them doing that. Saying there were rioters, etc.,, active in the area would be relevant.

They voted out Lightfoot and brought in Johnson. If they kick Johnson out they might just elect somebody even worse. The voters of Chicago seem unable to connect the dots between cause and effect. I'm not saying they're stupid, but they do seem to have some serious blind spots.
3
Poor Pakman. I don't know if I've ever seen someone so disappointed to find out that people weren't murdered.
3
I don't get it. You suggested that she's not especially bright, and she confirms that a lot, but then she's been really successful in a lot of ways that I wouldn't expect from a stupid woman. I'm trying to reconcile her as an evil genius and simultaneously as the evil version of Gilligan, going from success to success by dumb luck.

My other beef with the Roe v Wade decision (from a layman's POV) was that it ignored the interests of the unborn in America. AFAIK a right to privacy doesn't allow you infringe upon the well-being of another who is also protected by U.S.. While Isuppose it's true that the unborn are by definition not citizens (not having been born to Americans or being born in America), the courts decided that U.S. law applies to non-citizens in the U.S. as well, even those illegally in the U.S. If the court had decided that the unborn aren't legally persons, that'd be one thing. Refining ambiguous terms seems a court-worthy thing to do. If the voters didn't like it, they could pass laws to explicitly disambiguate that.

I wish I hadn't already had my birthday. Alpacas in those little party hats would have been adorable.
3
If he wanted to say he faced bombing he could have joined CNN. Seriously, if this is on the level (this being MSNBC that's a big IF) I respect his courage, though not his sanity.
3
That sounds like they did him dirty. And that has to hurt.
3
"There's gotta be some logic to it." Heh. I remember optimism.
2
It's a common tactic, probably used by both sides. If a shoplifter attacks a security guard and the guard unalives him, people will scream about "He was killed over a bag a chips" or some such nonsense.
2
There should be a long prison term for abuses of power like this.
2
San Francisco is getting rid of capitalism, one fed-up store at a time. It'll be fascinating to see what comes out of this, but I'm glad I'm doing that from a distance.
2
I think a suspension is a good call here, until he's convicted.
2
It sounds as though there's insufficient evidence to conclude that this was a hate crime. However, his mass murder lacked measures to ensure equity and accurate demographic representation.
2
We can't be the housing project of the world any more than we can police the world.
2
I can see the judge's point, but I lean strongly in favor of giving the jury more information rather than less.
2
I hate to say it, but itf Smollett's attorney is right about protecting against double-punishment then I'd side with Smollett. The law has to protect people who commit despicable acts the same as others according to its letter. Ideally, Kim Fox should suffer some sort of penalty, but it's Chicago.
2
@universalsoldier2293 I don't disagree with any of that.
2
It seems to me that Bouzy picked precisely the wrong attack and the wrong target. This was something like the Scarecrow challenging the Tin Man to a torch juggling competition.
2
Chicago's mayor: "Stop talking about our city!" New Orleans mayor: "It's pronounced Naw Awlins." (probably)
2
Every other lawyer you know really sucks at law, then.
2
I think he should go into the penile penal system.
2
To find out if you were ripped off? To warn others?
2
I'll say innocent until proven guilty, but Lizzo's defense sounds pretty weak.
2
It looks like I rushed to judgement. I really have to stop doing... I mean, I really have to carefully consider not doing that.
2
I don't understand what she's thinking.
2
If you don't charge minors as adults, minor become a lot more attractive to those trying to find someone to do something criminal.
2
"A White man will not be convicted of killing a Black man." Odd that she, of all people, hasn't heard of the George Floyd case.
2
I doubt it'll help much, unfortunately. I think this is mostly an election between Trump and anyone-but-Trump.
2
IIRC, in Atlanta a taser is considered a lethal weapon. And innocent until proven guilty is for a trial, not for defending yourself; you do not have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that someone intends you death or grave bodily harm before responding with lethal force. If someone breaks into your home in most of the U.S., that someone is presumed subject to lethal force by the homeowner, unless there is evidence that they were not a threat.
2
@racheld23biscuitsmom42 You're wrong here: "Asking that shooting deaths of overwhelmingly young black men be investigated and eventually prevented is not demonization." Young black men are not overwhelmingly the victims of police shooting deaths. They are disproportionately so, but the majority victims of police shooting are white. You're wrong here, too: "It’s asking that certain races finally be humanized." Young black men disproportionately commit crimes, so you would expect more to be shot by the police. There's nothing dehumanizing in treating young black men like other humans of similar activity. I have to agree with: "asking that a human being, no matter their title, do not kneel on another humans neck until they are dead.. is not unreasonable and it’s certainly not demonizing an entire organization."

She seems to be a professional victim. What ever happened to that stiff upper lip?
2
I feel sympathy for Mr. Johnson, but he really shouldn't be in that job. His city is suffering and his response is to flail wildy at imagined conspiracies.
2
I'm not sure I agree. If someone was asked to write down Lincoln's Gettysburg Address then a squiggly line should get a zero score. If it was phrased as, "Show that you know what the Pledge of Allegiance says" then the question was fine and the zero score was as well. But accusing a kid of aligning with communists and pedos is beyond the pale; what did the teacher think this was, the internet?
2
I still think this was a genuine robbery. Admittedly that's because I find it hard to believe anybody would be stupid enough to fake this when IMHO there are better ways to commit insurance fraud. if this really was fake, he made Jussie look like Einstein squared.
2
Innocent until proven guilty. I hope he's innocent. Otherwise it seems like an early end to a promising political career... Even if he is a Democrat. 😉
2
It seems to leave Heard with two options: say that Depp didn't abuse her, or show that she was actually abused. If the former then Depp loses his case but clears his name, and that might be a more important victory.
2
Snce they can't be federally prosecuted, do they lose 5th Amendment protections? Or would possible state or local prosecution still keep that valid?
2
He didn't need to kill her, but IMHO that doesn't mean he's in the wrong. Requiring her to pull the trigger before he can just isn't a reasonable requirement to me.
2
Saying "straight" means "not crooked" is like saying "not gay" means "not happy."
2
It's nice to see that even those voters can change course when an experiment doesn't work the way they wanted.
2
That was the doctor's first clue that they needed treatment.
2
@abrahamplepcher8985 Thank you, Abraham You've been very polite in the whole thing.
2
OK, here's one for you on a different approach to mens rea. Chauvin may have been concerned that Floyd was in the throes of excited delirium and could have hurt himself, and had his knee on Floyd in the idea that it might prevent injury rather than comliance. If so, would that still constitute assault? As an aside, from what I can tell of Minneapolis's good samaritan statutes (604A.01 GOOD SAMARITAN LAW), they would not give him immunity from civil or criminal liability, for different reasons. That may not cover reckless action, but would a reasonable person consider the prolonged use of an approved technique to be reckless? Appreciate your pretty objective take on all this!

I can see logic in requiring masks on airplanes, because people are packed more tightly together there than in most indoor venues, and for hours. But that isn't a legal justification to continue an emergency provision for what is no longer an emergency. In any case, the mask mandate was very rough on some people with breathing problems; my mom couldn't have made a six hour flight from California where she lives to new England where I live with a mask on, just from difficulties breathing.

Split the leagues, and let each one fend for itself. Problem solved!
