Ever since I passed the 500k mark, I felt completely free and basically retired .. I agree with Tate that once you have the money, a lot of the stuff you thought you wanted, you don't actually want. Most gadgets end up owning you anyways, instead of you owning them.

5m USD to have the IRS as mother-in-law? Uff, hard pass

Margaret Thatcher — 'The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.'

It's a form of slavery
113
If taxes weren't so ridiculously high, people wouldn't spent that much time to reduce/avoid/minimize their tax bills.

What is it about those anglosaxon countries (UK, Aus, NZ, Canada ..) that they suddenly want to go full authoritarian? Are they still sad that they missed out on that during the last century?
95
NYC is literally a sinking city
79
One of the worst mistakes the Mexican electorate could have done .. With a libertarian president they could have skyrocketed their economy and wealth in the current situation. Hope they survive her.
74
In a lot of countries one could easily cut taxes and government spending by 50% without any loss of government provided services. They are run so incredibly inefficient.
72
Because they also want to show the population who's the master and who's the slave
71
'How Can Nomads Leave Family Behind'' .. by airplane, train, ship, car .. all valid options to escape from toxic families :D
70
I'm often joking that in certain areas of the US property ownership isn't even possible. With 2-3% annual tax its more akin to a perpetual lease from the government with a hefty downpayment than ownership.
69
undesirables meaning communists .. yes, i want to get the f... away from them
67
As a German I'm very happy we have Poland and Hungary in the EU, so the EU doesn't go completely crazy.
64
US micromanages its citizens. In a lot of languages there is not even a word for things like 'jaywalking'.
58
When I went to school and heard about how people in feudalistic societies had to pay a tenth of their income to the nobility, I always thought how unfair this was. Now here in western Europe we almost have to be happy to keep a tenth of our income after subtracting all taxes!
57
@michastankiewicz9966 you're such a victim
53
Equality of outcome, equity, inclusivity, f*minism ... All those fancy words to conceal what they really mean: Socialism
53
Yup and they will award themselves diplomatic passports and travel freely to hotels and buffets payed by extortion money (a.k.a tax) ..
52
"Exit tax" is also pretty much a euphemism, in reality it is not different from the payment slaves had to make to buy themselves freedom. They also had an "exit tax".
49
This is exactly how I currently feel. Maybe one thing to add for men would be the potential to get drafted (the draft is only paused at the moment) for a nonsensical war after our government basically overnight drastically changed the post-ww2 foreign policy doctrine including a huge increase in arms procurement. And if we know anything from the past then that a large military force always gets dragged into conflicts or starts some on their own.
46
Well, there is a reason why Germans are one of the largest groups of immigrants in a lot of immigration countries like the US, Canada, NZ, etc.. Germany has an oversupply of (specific) talent in engineering, law, medicine. This leads to relatively low salaries compared to some of the other mentioned countries and often fierce competition. Especially when you are not speaking German you'll be at the bottom of the pecking order. Combine that with the unwillingness to learn the language and certain attitudes of entitlement from certain expats and I can see why they hate it 🤷♂ The housing situation has escalated due to the migration crises from 2015 and now Ukraine. Demand has exploded and even though a lot of new construction is taking place at the moment it can't keep up with that kind of demand.
45
Personally the brutal heat alone in Dubai makes it unlivable for me, so KL any day!
41
Even as a German I got this occassionally at certain borders: "Where is this country?" as the cover of our passport only states the name in German "Bundesrepublik Deutschland"
40
Socialists need broke people .. who will vote for them otherwise?
39
They should introduce tax exemptions for every day the thermometer exceeds 30°C in the shade ..
38
SA unfortunately can not be saved
38
The last few days have shown me very clearly that I don't want to pay ANY tax in a country that sees men only as cannon fodder and cash cows but screeches about "equality" day in day out. That's why I'm leaving. Even if I have to take losses on certain assets now.
37
@alexnezhynsky9707 Yeah, the sweet, sweet poison of socialism. The worst kind of disease on this planet. That is something we would need immunity against. Even though anyone could learn about this using the internet, people still opt to stay ignorant of the dangers and we will be stuck with periodic civil wars/rebellions it seems.
26
How many months of health and safety courses do I need to do to open a hotdog stand in Australia? ... Asking for a friend
26
US: "We're from the government and here to collect your taxes!" Canada: "Sorry, we're from the government and here to collect your taxes!"
25
This is the problem with retirement accounts. They are basically at the whim of the government. In the end they decide how much you will ever be able to withdraw.
24
Feel like a stranger in my own country and am currently wrapping things up to leave, selling real estate, cars etc. ..
22
Would have thought Afghanistan or Papua New Guinea would be number one on that list .. or maybe the DR Congo
21
Bali is chock full with wantrepreneurs unfortunately .. the biggest BS scene I have ever witnessed
20
Exactly! Good capital allocation means going where you get the most for your buck! If you're a slave to your location then you'll never be free anyway!
19
A no-nonsense analysis. I like it!
18
@TheNVSK So you mean you own ICBMs and aircraft carriers? Impressive!
18
Oh boy, as someone who has traveled to most of these places (Afgh, Syria, Turkmenistan, DR Congo, ..) this brings back so many memories. Dealing with beaurocrats is always 'interesting', dealing with beaurocrats in Turkmenistan however is like Kafka on steroids.
17
Tax paying should be voluntary anyway, depening upon ones satisfaction with the governments services at the end of the year.
16
Work for your own wealth
16
@rubensnogueira5838 Too many wannabe do-gooders there
16
they went full communist with the current pm unfortunately .. i think the country is lost
15
Portugal also considers a ridiculous amount of countries as 'tax havens' (basically any country that isn't socialist) .. And taxes business transactions with them extremely high
13
Currently buying Ukraine and Russia companies .. everything at least 30% to 50% off of already low valuations and ridiculously high cash flow.
12
@abdiellawrence397 Most Germans couldn't care less about that. We still had the Stasi until 1990 and most Germans have some relative having suffered from their total surveillance police state. Anonymous cash is king here and its making a comeback in a lot of current police states.
12
This is like the situation in Germany post 1933 .. "only" around 30-40% voted for Hitler but the rest that spoke up was ostracised
12
Been to somewhere between 70 or 80 countries. The only ones creating problems were Vietnam, Tajikistan and Mali. In those three the border guards asked more or less directly for a bribe when trying to leave the country even though my papers were in order and I wasn't overstaying.
11
Like Zelensky .. cough
11
Can't really blame the many Kiwis living overseas. It's an eco-ideological nanny state that discriminates against men as well. Also Air NZ the worst airline I've ever flown (Never got a refund when they made me sit in a regular seat eventhough I had payed extra for more legroom just because I was travelling alone and happenened to be seated next to a teenager.).
