The Americans DID come to the Japanese under the perfect circumstances for the Japanese advantage insofar the strategic disposition can allow (USN having to protect a fleet of slow transport ships all within range of the Japanese land-based aircraft and the counterattack of the full available might of the IJN).. The result was the battle of the Philippine Sea. USA by that point, using its vast superiority in industrial production, has constructed a fleet far larger and significantly more advanced than the Japanese could field and the Japanese could not beat it no matter the doctrine. The only way for Japan to win was to make USN attacks against the Japanese holdings so costly and time consuming that the US would be forced to compromise lest it bankrupts itself. But the fact that Japan was facing a coalition of US, UK + satellites and was about to be attacked by the USSR too made that strategy impossible to implement. They stepped on too many toes and left themselves exposed to attack from too many sides. But that was not a failure of NAVAL OPERATIONAL DOCTRINE (discussed in this video) but rather of far broader and far reaching NATIONAL POLICY.

  9.  @egoist920  Commander of the Austro-Hungarian 21th division Artur Przyborski fought rifle in hand in the front ranks during the first night of the Battle of Cer. His division got routed that night, but still, respect for the effort. Commander of the 28th regiment of that division died fighting that night. But on the Serbian side two regimental commanders were wounded too.

  11. 2:24:22 Apart from fighters, US employed its long range land-based bombers as maritime patrol aircraft (starting with B-17s) and sometimes, when they met their Japanese H6K or H8K flying boat counterparts, they attacked them (US planes being land-based having the speed advantage). There is an interesting testimony from the Japanese side of one such encounter at j-aircraft website titled "Shootout Between an H6K and a B-17".

  16. 00:38 I seriously object to failing to mention the French Navy's contribution to supplying the Macedonian (AKA Salonika) Front. Galipoli Campaign, an abject failure that everybody likes to talk about lasted for several months. The Macedonian campaign lasted for more than 3 years and resulted in the first armistice with a Central Power (Bulgaria) and contributed significantly to Turkey's and Austria-Hungary's decision to ask for an armistice (the latter also broke apart). Allied armies had to be transported there. Serbian Army needed to be evacuated from Albania in late 1915. having retreated there in the aftermath of the joint Central Powers' invasion, later being transpotrted to Salonika to fight on the Macedonian front. Allied armies on the said front needed to be supplied and serviced by hospital ships... French and Italian navies with some British and Japanese contribution maintained the security of the sea lanes (although Central powers' submarines caused quite a few losses), and their merchant fleet did the hard work of supplying the allied armies there.

Fought in Russo-Japanese war for Russia - got torpedoed in the opening torpedo boat attack, fought the Japanese at Port Arthur and Yellow Sea, Retreated to Port Arthur, got sunk by the land-based heavy artillery of the Japanese Army, then got captured by the Japanese, raised, repaired, served them in WW1 and then also served them in their intervention in Siberia ironically against the red variety of their former owners but alongside their white variety. If ships of that era other than pre-dreadnoughts themselves can be considered too - the Russian/Soviet armored cruiser Aurora.

  21.  @QuizmasterLaw  If you knew that, just as the Americans did, the Japanese also positioned submarines near the islands they were about to attack with aircraft, also had float planes on hand and would send them to pick up survivors if possible you would not be repeating such prejudiced myths - just the kind this very video is trying to dispel, albeit concerning a different topic. Hell they even designed and produced cargo submarines to supply their cut off island garrisons (cut off due to US island hopping strategy, which was made possible in the latter part of the war, by US air and naval superiority, courtesy of US industrial might).

  31.  @Drachinifel   Drachinifel  I agree that the actual admirals in command of the Russian fleet in the Russo-Japanese War battles were not that bad (that is why I did not say Rozhestvensky, Makarov or Vitgeft). I was referring to pre-war admirals in charge of the fleet who certainly are at least in part to blame for the sorry state of the Russian navy crews. And it indeed was a system failure hence it would be difficult to pinpoint a single culprit, so yes exclusion of that bit I can agree on. Our disagreement seems to be a difference in emphasis on overall impact of their mistakes (favored by me) vs the level of personal failing they displayed in action against their training and experience (favored by you). Given the topic I guess you have merit in such reasoning, although, since they are all fairly famous admirals: their fame does come from the impact they had. I wonder how many less well known naval commanders who perhaps never even went to war were even worse - and replaced before they could do (more) serious damage (Honda point disaster-style)

  34.  @Philistine47  LOL you need to read more about all the battles you listed including the first day at Coral Sea... As for Kido Butai having radar at Midway... ROTFLMAOZEDONG, so where were radar sets on Shokaku and Zuikaku at Eastern Solomons and Santa Cruz? They had periods in dock in the meantime... Finally as flawed as the Japanese fighter control was, USN's was bad as well, but the radar made all the difference and that is my point (read my first message again). It provided early warning, enabled all ships to prepare for attack (CO2 in avgas lines...) directed the fighters... Even with mistakes on USN side the difference in the number of carriers sunk in carrier battles tells (IJN submarines nearly equalled the 1942 tally though). Nagumo too learned from his mistakes, changing tactics at Eastern Solomons and Santa Cruz (detatching light carrier baits). Nagumo retreated after PH, Fletcher retreated after landings at Guadalcanal, both had wins and losses, both got sacked...

  38. Three of her 138.6 mm guns had been dismounted by November 1914 and sent from Salonika by rail to Serbia to reinforce the French naval mission there, known as "Mission D". The guns were to be emplaced as coastal artillery on the Danube, around Belgrade, to fight the Austro-Hungarian Danube flotilla of monitors, which were hard for the Serbian Army's field artillery to destroy as it lacked AP rounds. The first gun (it may be two) to arrive and be installed was quickly captured by the Austro-Hungarians when the Serbian army was compelled to abandon Belgrade during the Battle of Kolubara (only to liberate it two weeks later). Two replacement guns were sent and the guns were installed and took part in the defense of Belgrade in 1915 (a minor part of which was described in Sabaton's song "Last Dying Breath") and were captured or destroyed when the city fell. Austro-Hungarians lost 3 monitors during the capture of Belgrade (some of which were later raised and repaired) although most of the fatal blows were dealt not by artillery but by naval mines which Russia had sent along with a detatchment of mine laying experts who laid the mines with the aid of Serbian river boats at night. The British had also sent a few coastal naval guns and a torpedo boat, their naval mission to Serbia being headed by Admiral Ernest Troubridge (of the pursuit of Goeben and Breslau infamy).

  40. That would have resulted in immediate invasion of the Zone Libre by the Germans, which was wat the British wanted - the French and the Germans to resume fighting each other. But that was no longer in the best interest of the defeated France as it would have suffered a lot of casualties (both civillian and combatants) and destruction while inflicting far less on the Germans in return. Germans also didn't want that since the armistice with France got them pretty much the most of what they could hope for at less cost than having to invade the Zone Libre and keep it occupied.

And only when its back was broken (locally or globally) did they attempt to rely on the big guns of their battleships. But you are wrong in assuming the Japanese considered their battleships as decisive weapons. I know many US historians are propagating that erroneous theory and I am sad to see you fell into the trap of accepting it uncritically. No. They considered them a second rate reserve that they used only when considered absolutely necessary and all other options were exhausted. Because they knew they were far less cost-effective than the aviation and lesser warships not to mention they were morale keeping units with a lot of prestige in public perception as well as the most difficult (in the given circumstances impossible) to replace.

  48.  @davefranklin7305  That might be true among the conservative higher ups like Osami Nagano, mostly prior to Pearl Harbor, but they were not in operational command of the Combined fleet which was handled by their younger and more up-to-date, tech savvy subordinates like Yamamoto or Ozawa. Yamamoto committed the Kongos to shell the Henderson Field on Guadalcanal only after the carriers, land airpower and lesser warships got beaten back (Eastern Solomons, Santa Cruz, Cape Esperance, aerial campaign from Rabaul). At Midway - he withdrew them after the carrier debacle (USN targets too fast, the island - not worth it). Ozawa's plan for the battle of the Philippine Sea relied on long range airstrikes, battleships were only the escort. Only at Leyte Gulf where his air arm was woefully inadequate did he commit the battleships as the main striking force - because he had nothing left. No oplan survives contact with the enemy. Also applies to contact with technological advances. Whether rationalizing holding back battleships as the main strike force was used in planning papers to sell any particular carrier airpower-reliant plan to any conservative higher-ups I don't know but that is the likeliest explanation. By looking of what the Japanese actually did - they sure did not consider the battleships as a decisive weapon. Simply too slow, too heavy on resource consumption, firepower of too short a range compared to airpower, too big a moral blow if lost, too vulnerable to air or submarine attack. In short - cost innefficient. Finally - after Midway they began a huge crash program to rebuild the Kido Butai that included turning the two Ises to hybrid battleship-carriers, while after losing two Kongos at Guadalcanal they - as Drach said, converted the 3rd Yamato Class battleship hull to - not a carrier (since - low top speed) but - a huge air transport (with limited asw carrier capability for self defense). If this isn't a proof enough that they put emphasis on airpower (in case of carrier airpower - hit and run) rather than battleship guns - I don't know what is.

Lend lease locomotives amounted to about 10% of the USSRs total - just about enough to make up the losses (most of the rolling stock was evacuated from the soon-to-be occupied areas). Lion's part of the work on the USSR's rail network during the war was done by the Soviet rolling stock.

  50. They did. Defend against US attacks causing as many casualties as possible until US can no longer sustain the cost of attacking. They had war plans based on the same concept in effect right until the armistice. It didn't work. But it worked against Russia in 1905. and the same basic concept worked against USA partly in Korea and fully in Vietnam.
