With what they consider "real". "Fuck the EU!", "Tougher stance!", "They need us more than we need them!", "The French will back down!". Those had been their ideas for decades and none of them realised "my ideas were wrong", only "I've been lied to".

In case of UK suspending the Protocol or parts of it, tariffs would be put right away. it's not a political decision, but purely a technical one, and a list of counter-measures to chose from had already been decided, because that's how the EU works (have you noticed that, when someone announces new tariffs against the EU, counter-tariffs are announced within 24 hours?)

  11. The trade war is already in place. Biden lifted US tarifs on EU steel and aluminium, and the EU lifted its retailatory tariffs (and didn't apply the newly announced ones) in exchange. Those of UK are still in place, but the US simply don't care. UK is not big enough.

The only thing the EU rules provide is that, if that measure is "certified" (so the glass contains exactly 568ml) then it has to sport the "CE" stamp of the certification autority somewere.

So EU has a lower current death rate than UK. That's statistic for you.
