What happened (north of Kiev, north of Kharkiv...) is that the occupying force had been slowly exhausted by small scale attacks and poor logistic, then a limited Ukrainian attack retook some village, and at that point the Russians decided to leave a larger portion of territory to try regroup and use those troops (that were not going to gain anything remaining there) elsewere.
