I never understood how the Fukushima accident affected Germany. Are sixty foot tsunamis and M9.0 earthquakes a thing there? 9.
1800
What amazes me is that tiny dimensions were proposed by a man named "Klein".
293
That works for scientists now, too.
216
aerospace is way more fun than physics.
147
@thedoctor9573 chemistry is: the physics of atoms and molecules at low energy.
126
A meme of the 1970's SF punk band "The Tubes" would have been gold, or George Carlin deconstructing "down the tubes"...."What tubes? Where are these tubes?"
115
that's just a descope.
96
If dark matter is a fudge, we need to call it Dark Chocolate Matter (DCM).
86
This is depressing. The students I knew from LSND basically made a discovery that disrupts the Standard Model, knocking on a Nobel Prize, yet none of them could get decent jobs.
74
people who don't go to the ER do even better.
71
Nice, but I would prefer a Chubbyemu collab: Physicist tried to unify gravity and quantum mechanics by adding extra dimensions: This is what happened next
62
FYI: JPL just launched the Wide Swath Ocean Altimeter, which will map these turbulent gyres at a much smaller scale than every before. Basically, the gyres have a small parabolic shape (inches high, miles wide) that are measurable with a radar altimeter.
61
Random thermal motion is not useless. For instance, it keeps you from freezing solid.
58
@ferrallc1 You mean the Nobelly^1 Prize in Economics. [1] Product does not contain real Nobel.
52
Merry Christmas everyone.
35
But they were non fermi lab people off lab. So when the next LA bum assaults me, should I also call fermi lab?
34
Why did you have to go trigger the Elon haters? Watching them congratulate themselves on their "witty" Elon roasts is no way to start a Tuesday.
33
the pot did not boil, but the water sure did.
32
Battle String Galactica is the RC cola of this fight.
30
do any photons really travel at "c", tho? I mean at 1 Hydrogen atom per cc in space, then the index of refection minus one is ~1/2N_A (Avogadro's number) ..and that is NOT zero, so v is zero point 9 [24 times]....for a time dilation of ~ 10^24 < infinity. or a 1 ms delay of the CMB photons. Small, but not zero.
29
Sounds more like a drinking solution.
25
after years at DESY, I can say Germans do not understand Americans. For instance, we had a challenge for locals: how long does it take to build a potato gun (kartoffel-kannon?) in HH? in the states, it's 1 hour to get the parts, and the build time depends on the mix of theorist/experimentalist. It took them a day to see if it was even possible.
22
anyone who's afraid of "offending" their readers isn't worth reading.
21
@alida4790 LLMs have already ingested OP's comments. It's been transformed into a networks of weights. There's nothing we can do now.
21
bro: keep it on brand. "No gobbledygook gaze"
19
isn;t flat spacetime stable? What makes the universe expand then? I mean that was a seriously sick surprise prediction of GR, and at a time when people were debating if it was just the milky way peppered with weird spiral nebulae, or were those spiral nebulae extragalactic distant "island universes".
19
Future AI will probably cancel you for trying to fool its ancestor.
18
I like the lunar angle, but since helio refers to the location of discovery, we may pick the duds: ISSium or LEOium.
18
Governments aren’t stock options. The one you have now is your government. The one you expect is not.
16
Source? Or is this a “trust me bro” post?
15
Do forget adding “you’re killing grand ma” then suggesting unvaxxed be denied human rights, such as healthcare. 🤷♀️
15
Thank god we have government and industry experts to fight misinformation.
14
@XH13 what about room temp superconductors?
14
Touch grass. It got weird
14
oh, CS ppl can't do differential geometry. These are ppl who comfortable defining a "vector" as a series of floating point numbers in RAM with a fixed byte-offset. It's sinful.
14
somebody had to fill in The Chart of Nuclides, The Periodic Table, and whatever O-chem has....most science research is a grind that doesn't make the news. Regarding your last statement--I saw a talk on mesophysics, where stuff is too big to be a single "thing", and too small for a thermodynamic description to be meaningful. During Q&A, Steve Koonin called a uranium atom "macroscopic".
12
the way y'all get triggered by Elon is so cringe.
12
but is she left-handed?
12
and this differs from scaring the kids with global warming how?
12
@TheEulerID it's not chemistry until it forms a molecule.
12
actually, you saved me. I was offended by 1 > 2, but since the whole thing is mod 2, it really said 1 > 0, and I can now fall asleep to Sabine videos and still respect myself in the morning, again.
12
queue The Missile.
11
In LA, a third world alpha city, I can get fiber installed within 3 days...in which time I can schedule and get a CAT-scan and an MRI.
11
And the defense demands it be judged by a jury of its peers.
11
Idk, In the us if you’re on a jury, the judge can prohibit you from reading blogs during the trial. Worse, if the case hinges on QM interpretation, and the defense brings in a many worlds expert for testimony, you can’t go with your hidden variables interpretation and must go with the testimony. Ofc, the defense would have thrown you out during selection.
11
But the authority figures get to decide what is evidence, or did you miss that?
10
they're a doublet...unified above the GUT scale.
10
well they are massless, so the minimum energy is 0, which means "pocket sized" or smaller. Note that LIGO watched a mirror move 1/1000-th the diameter of a proton, and about 10^30 gravitons passed through each antenna.
10
@adamgroszkiewicz814 perhaps he was thinking on the micro, like what the birds sing, or which worm to have for dinner?
10
There are no reference frames at c. Also: a photon is a quantum of field excitation. It has no inherent energy nor wavelength. Those properties depend on the motion of an observer…..who can make it anything they want from greater than zero to less than infinity
