  3. I would like to see a "compare and contrast" video about Hungary and Turkey. Both are problematic but which is really a threat to the EU community? Which is more autocratic? Which is a more significant geopolitical actor? How does Orban compare to Erdogan?

  4. I can't answer that without know specifically what the unionists are concerned about. Is it about practical matters or purely ideological? Practical concerns can be resolved but it's an emotional opposition there isn't much that can be don.

  5. Turkey is a much bigger problem than Hungary. The problems of Hungary are bad for Hungarians but they aren't engaged in active aggression and violence against its citizens and neighbors like Turkey.

  6.  @japteshwarsingh5866  the US really failed with India. We should have tried a lot sooner and a lot harder to build relations with India. We should be the ones sending an Indian into space through NASA. Tbh, I was shocked when I learned why India was neutral. Part or all of the fault lies with the US for its lack of vision and inability to forsee this outcome.

  16. More broadly speaking it seems the trouble starts when one ethnic group in a region wants more power per person than other ethnic groups in the same region. Often because that group sees itself as superior. And why is it that some large countries can exist with multiple ethnic groups with its borders and others splinter into small countries because they cannot coexist with each other? Reminds me of the Hatfield's and McCoy's or gang wars fighting for turf. But if I'm honest the situation just too complicated and I doubt I'll ever understand the importance people place on their ethnicity compared to who they are as individuals.

Erdogan is leaning towards Putin, purchasing Russian weapons in violation of sanctions, violated the sovereignty of Cyprus, and was denied EU membership for human rights violations. Erdogan is not a reliable NATO partner. Finland and Sweden are completely reliable.

  24. That is the point nobody seems to understand. Israel must do as you suggest or let Palestine become a state. Democracy matters. Equal treatment under the law matters. I firmly support Isreal's right to exist, but they can't have it both ways. It has to be one or the other.

  25. It may be impossible to know, but I wonder what the people of Belarus want. Lukashenko has made unilateral choices that might make sense for him personally but that doesn't really say much about the direction Belarus would go without him.

  26. Putin is obsessed with conquering Ukraine. Even if they ended the war at the existing borders, it would only be a matter of time before he tries again. And Ukraine is absolutely determined to recover their land so they won't be negotiating any time soon. Even if the free world slows support to Ukraine, the Ukrainians will keep fighting. The consequences for Ukrainians if they lose is too terrible to think about.

  30. Orban has cornered the corruption market. The courts, regulatory bodies and the press have been disarmed and subjugated by the state. It may still be a democracy technically, but in practice, Orban rules Hungary like an autocrat.

  34. @lati long the war has brought attention to geopolitical realities few people were paying attention to. It isn't just India. The need to cooperate with Russia prevents Israel from giving more support to Ukraine just as India's dependence on Russian weapons makes it problematic for India. The US needs to reformulate its approach for the much bigger problem of China and avoid making the same mistakes.

  36. @Niro  right, but the only alternative is to allow a Palestinian state. The religious right in Israel is making that almost impossible. Tbh, I can't think of any good solutions, but the status quo can't last forever. To an American like me, the most important thing is democracy and equal treatment under the law. IMHO that is a requirement for any solution.

  37. I think nothing changes unless Putin makes a move in that region. If Ukraine believes Russia is using the region to further military advantage I think they would step in to stop it. I doubt Putin would make that mistake but he miscalculated in Ukraine so I suppose he might misjudge this situation also.

Erdagon is willing to use violence to suppress dissent and take territory. He is much closer to Putin than Orban (IMHO).

  47. Ignoring the emotional component for a moment, don't you think alignment with the West would be a smart move? Not right away of course, but after making the transition to (much better) Western weapon, India would be in stronger position to defend itself against China. If China tries to take your land the whole free world would be on your side. Russia is a poor and unreliable ally.

  48. Orban controls the media and limits civil liberties. Technically it's a democracy but he makes it almost impossible for any real opposition to stand again him. Hungary is sliding into autocracy and Orban is using indoctrination and repression to gain more and more power in a vicious cycle.

  50. It's just another banana republic. Except now, it's oil. As long as they don't attack a neighbor or start killing minority ethnic groups, we should accept them as they are. If the people aren't committed to freedom and democracy there isn't much outside forces can do about it. If they want a dictator to rule over them, it's their choice.
