  2. Mzn T Here in the Netherlands, they're not all that popular. All we generally care about is the theoretical CO2 emission (and the tax advantages that come with it), and downsize turbo engines are more economical on paper, even though in the real world, they use equally or more fuel than a Mazda SkyActiv engine. Weight isn't all-defining, and making structural compromises on the car (the Lotus filosophy) isn't always necessary, especially on GT's and such. However, the Mazda filosophy (shaving off grammes where they're not necessary, to gradually reduce weight without the sacrifices) can be used on all cars, if you ask me. There's nothing wrong with that; for sports cars, less weight is always better if you don't have to sacrifice anything. That even goes for large, two-tonne four-seater convertibles like the Maserati GranCabrio.

  3. Mzn T Indeed. Granted, it is quite costly. Mazdas don't come cheap these days, but then again, they're still much cheaper than the 'premium' brands and offer more car for your money than most regular brands.

  4. Mzn T Well, the one hole in modern Mazdas' excellent reliability is corrosion. It's not all that bad, but it's definitely not the most corrosion-resistant brand out there, even after the SkyActiv renaissance. Granted, even cars from brands like Toyota and Subaru can suffer from corrosion, despite being some of the most reliable cars in the world.

  5. Squall Leonhart True. Modern cars are usually not all that reliable, with much of the electronics giving in after a while. However, downsized turbo engines are a bigger problem: 1-litre TSI engines with 115+ bhp, one of the many 1.6-litres with 200 bhp, etc.; all of those ask a lot from a small displacement. As a result, their longetivity is questionable. Mazda, which sticks to large, naturally aspirated engines, won't have that problem.

  6. Squall Leonhart They don't fail during warranty. 2 or 3 years/100.000 km is the most commonly found warranty, and they'll hold up until then. It's a lot later that they start to have more issues; that's not necessarily a problem for now, but it might make the truly cheap secondhand car market disappear, as cars below 2000 euros have commonly done 200.000 km or more. Older cars will be classics (and those are definitely more than 2000 euros), newer ones will be too expensive. Downsizing hasn't been around very long yet, so few people have gotten enough km on them to get problems.

  7. Adam Pamungkas Again: good car, looks great for an SUV, but it's far from the prettiest Jag. Personally, I'd always prefer the XF, but it'll help bring Jaguar revenue, which they can use to develop 'proper' Jags. I would never buy one, but I don't mind its existence.

  9. This is all nice and stuff, but I'll pass. I'd have an Alfa Romeo Giulia QV. Sure, it's a bit slower, but instead of a set of hideous alloy wheels and a cheap-looking Halfords rear spoiler, it has rear doors and an elegant design.

  11. Nik Brudar Oh, hello there! I'd have the CSL, though frankly, if given the choice, I'd have neither. For that sort of money, I'd have an Aston Martin V8 Vantage.

Nik Brudar I drove a V8 Vantage once (on a racetrack, as an arrangement for teenagers without driving licenses), and while I wasn't allowed to go past 60 kph (I still did, without any complaint from the instructor), I kind of fell in love with the car. It's been one of my favourite cars ever since.

My only reference point is the BMW 130i I also drove that day (at significantly lower speeds), but as far as I can tell, the car is comfortable yet sharp enough, with communicative steering that has a lot of feel to it despite not being very heavy. Plus, the sound is great. The flappy paddle gearbox is supposed to be slow, but it seemed to react fast enough. I would love to be a car journalist, actually.

  14. Nik Brudar Well, I know when a car is comfortable and when it sounds good, but beyond that, I had no reference point. Moreover, there wasn't much in the way of bumps on the track: the only ones were the starting grid's lines. It did feel very stable, much like a go-kart. Wait, your Colt is the only car you've ever driven? Motoring journalist is one of my backup plans, should I fail my career. I reckon I might also become a salesman (preferably a car salesman, of course) and if all else fails, I'll become an abstract artist. I can randomly throw paint on a canvas, and I'm creative enough to come up with a farfetched explanation as to why it's art...

  15. Nik Brudar You'd imagine they couldn't be further apart, but even the vibratons that you feel as you set off in a go-kart, apply to the V8 Vantage. Though I think that's the case for all cars (with the BMW I didn't notice because I was focusing on the clutch; that one had a manual). Yup. D-segment space and equipment for a C-segment price (and refinement, admittedly). Proton, that's a Malaysian brand, right? You can get those in Slovenia? I know Proton from an old rally game for DOS :D I have a main plan and two more backup plans, so I doubt I'll need to be a modern artist. If I do, however, I'll create a bubble of art fame, then burst it by saying I was deliberately being ridicilous, hopefully taking down as much of the modern art world as I possibly can.

  16. Nik Brudar True. Is it normal that the car starts rolling when you release the clutch, and that you can always push the throttle to accelerate as long as you're moving? While I like the feel of a flappy-paddle gearbox (and only in a very powerful car, I can imagine), the feel of pulling a lever through its gears is just great. The movement of violently pulling it backwards alone is great. Now, I just need to learn to handle a clutch. DOS is the predecessor to Windows. It's a command line based system. Well, that's what backup plans are for, right? In case you fail. And oh cock, not again the 'ridicilous' mistakes (I misspelled that one on purpose).

  20. Fast Er For one, it uses VW technology, which isn't really very reliable. Moreover, it's much, much less overpriced. Lots of people buying a car isn't an indication of quality.

  28. Clayton Cortina The F12 has nervous steering and too much power to be relaxing. The Aston is fast, but it's real-world fast, not track fast. It calms down easily.

  38. Awayze You forgot the bit 'on paper'. Using smaller turbo engines barely reduces fuel consumption, it just allows them to exploit the turbo lag and drive at rev counts too low to activate the turbo, thus using as little power and as little fuel as possible. Fiddling with naturally aspirated engines (Mazda does that) returns a much lower mpg in the real world, although they're less economical on paper.

  45. Beautiful for an SUV, ugly for a MaseratI: the Levante is to Maserati what merchandise is to Ferrari. Purists call it blasphemy, and it is stretching the heritage, but it will ultimately bring in revenue and customers to fund the development of 'proper' cars. One might call this the 'Cayenne effect', after the car that Porsche quite possibly owes its current healthy state to. For that, I approve of the Levante, as much as I dislike the car itself.

  48. Everyone is here arguing over which dead serious supercar is better: the GT-R, or the GT3. Meanwhile, I'm sitting here dreaming of sliding about on a track in an F-type R, going extremely slowly but laughing so hard I overpower the roaring exhaust note. Life doesn't have to be serious all the time.
