The ski jump works and is effective so what's the problem? The F35B also uses vertical landing and take off.

Pakistan, Iran and Turkey don’t want them hence the massive fence built along the Turkish border. Do you read the news? No country in the surrounding area wants them. You need to look at the refugee convention and look at the definition of an economic migrant before you comment.

QE has embarked F35B’s for the first part of air trials being successful and are now on stage 2. No aircraft carrier in the world, even the Americans don’t start with aircraft. The UK have purchased 48 with the look to increase this to 148 roughly.

  24. Better it’s not nuclear, around 50% or world wide ports don’t accept nuclear vessels and the majority if those are commonwealth. It’s fuel tanks are enough to go to Sydney with fuel leftover. Imagine building a vessel that your partners won’t accept. Catapults are expensive and fragile, when one fails all do and they take up much more space. The F35B payload is more than sufficient with the ramp.

  28. MOOSEDOWNUNDER To patrol and monitor other ships. Offshore patrol vessels patrol and monitor the borders too and they have weapons. Having spent 5 days on a p2000 patrol vessel I can tell you that it's not all about weapons on small ships.

QE shouldn’t be nuclear powered. We wouldn’t have been able to afford one carrier let alone two if nuclear powered. Her range is enough to get her from Portsmouth to Sydney with fuel left so not a problem especially when you have the worlds best replenishment service, the RFA. Being nuclear powered would prevent us from visiting over 40% of the worlds ports which happen to be mostly commonwealth too. It’s more expensive to maintain plus the mid life refuelling would take both carriers out of action for years with nothing else. Ask the French how their nuclear aircraft carrier is getting along in the long run.

Warships and aircraft carriers have dealt with humanitarian disasters for decades thanks to their ability to land supplies shore, treat people on land and in ship and provide protection. Size isn’t relevant that has been made even 20 years ago, if this was the case the US and every other warship would be compromised. What country has 50,000 operational surface to air missiles? Interesting method to blow up ships by using surface to air missiles too.

  48. WatchDog Both carriers don't run on Windows XP, it was a rumour that they were but they aren't. Article related to that is on the UK Defence journal's website. The majority of carriers around the world aren't nuclear powered for a reason. Having a nuclear powered ship in a small navy is stupid, they require times ashore for the reactor and they have high maintenance costs and time aside for that, not ideal for a small navy. It wouldn't be problem if the carriers did run on XP, that system is still used all around the world for a reason. The software can be customised, making it more effective and safe as it's been changed for a specific standard that no one else uses.
