Several years before the war vast deposits of gas were discovered under Donbas and in a part of western Ukraine. Ukraine was about to make a deal with Western fossil fuel companies to develop the deposits, but they pulled out after Putin suddenly became more aggressive.  Putin is developing oil and gas in the Arctic circle as it becomes available due to climate change (the crazy old bastard), and he wants a warm water port close to Europe, and Ukraine's extensive gas pipelines from Russia to Western Europe, and also, Ukraine's extensive gas storage facilities. Fat lot of good that will do him now, as Europe has turned full throttle towards solar, wind and batteries due to his psychopathic antics.
