Under a compulsory vote system, fringe groups with only a minority following(KKK, Nazis, Alt Right etc.) would see their vote cancelled out by the mainstream party votes. The fringe groups couldn't possibly hope to gain any kind of foothold in the system, no matter how much money they spend on their campaigns. But under the USA optional vote system, a fringe group can muster enough voter support to "get a foot in the door" if, through apathy, other voters, who might've voted Democrat or Republican in large enough numbers, stayed home and watched that umpteenth rerun of "Leave It To Beaver" instead of getting out to the polling station and voting. Those fringe parties would use democracy to "get into power" but once in, there goes democracy down the gurgle-hole(drain).
