@LucidDream The amazing thing is that they wrote complex music that the audience actually liked! Most modern listeners hate complex music. Hurts their brains.

This isn't corruption but racketeering.
14
U2 a band everybody hates? My memories of the eighties have a U2 soundtrack, and I still love them!
14
I didn't know you could play cello on the guitar! Awesome covers, band! We Want More! We Want More!

@richardcarden4161 So, how many records did you sell with your clearly superior sound?
9
Your interviews are so much better than all other interviews of famous musicians I have ever heard. You can get to the core, because you understand them, and they know that.
9
Not just the budding ones ;-)
8
Excellent video. The music industry has become allergic to risk. However, without investing / running risks, you add no value. So -- this phase will not last very long as artists discover they are better off without these labels.
8
Rick Beato never does click-bait.
7
That brief tribute to Freddy has me in tears. Rest in peace, and thank you for the music.
7
@JakobKenda I certainly don't!
7
As he made it himself, yeah, no-one like it.
6
PLEASE subscribe, people! Rick does interviews no-one else does, getting way beyond "isn't it great to be famous", instead getting to the heart of the artists, why they make the music they make and how they do it. They are really single-take documentaries.

I always love stories like Hendrix changing resistors and capacitors to get the tone he wanted.
2
Over the years I have understood how much Christine contributed to the band, after forming my first opinions from the performances the band gave. She has a great legacy. RIP.
2
Good point. Rick's video also demonstrates that while his son has perfect pitch, he is not done studying as a singer. Scores very high on cuteness, and sings a lot better than my kids though ;-) I would guess that there are lots of people who have perfect pitch, who don't become full-time or even accomplished musicians because they have other interests and never get round to mastering an instrument.

This is breaking new legal ground. Most Copyright law protects "slavish" copies of music. AI creates content that is, for the purpose of copyright law, new. However, it is a "derived work" from the original works. Licenses may explicitly exclude works derived through AI, and the Fair Use laws should be modified to exclude them.

@dblack8141 Exactly. I like the closing statement from Ego in the movie Ratatouille, where he has some reflection about the job of a critic. Critics are paid to destroy people. It is cowardly and very easy, compared to actually creating things. We should take our revenge and critique the critics.

Every generation has its own music...

You guys are awesome! Amazing all the little tricks to get the right sounds: using four sticks, towels over toms, etc. Love your picks!

@MJLeger-yj1ww To make good instruments, they need to have the right 'coloration', 'timbre' etc (resonances) at the right frequencies. It would definitely be beneficial for them to have perfect pitch. It is not just the strings that need tuning, the whole instrument is tuned, by the luthier as he/she constructs it, whitling away slivers of wood at just the right places...

"A song doesn't need chords" I once got taught a little by a lute maestro. He explained that the difference between classical and modern music is that classical music does not do chords. They only do (multiple) melodies that interweave with each other. Probably an exaggeration, but he wanted to get a point across.

Its a nice list, I enjoyed listening to most of those songs. I didn't like the over-compression on the Luke Combs song, and the last one is not my cup of tea, but the rest is pretty good. I am always a sucker for guitars and a strong bass & drums section.

The USA is quickly approaching the final state of unrestrained Capitalism: a Kleptocracy, a society dictated by greed where those with money can do anything they like -- legal or not. The only way to save the nation is to get back to what made it great in the fifties & sixties: Social Democracy. If you go "Socialism Bad" then you need to study both what a Social Democracy is, and the history of the USA.

Companies giving only 9% to the actual creators don't have a right to exist. Glad the 'Net democratized content creation. Now, if only they could get rid of the DMCA that gives FAR too much power to existing copyright holders (i.e. Big Media), that would be another great step forward.

What a legend.
1
That was one mesjogge video ;-)
1
It always amazes me to see absolute pitch in action.

"In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. ... We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth that we critics must face is that in the grand scheme of things the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism..." -- Anton Ego, Ratatouille, 2007. Nuf said.

Question: Why isn't the Genesis song called a 13/4 meter?
1
I like your shorts, but I like your long-format videos better... And, yes, fully agree that people fail as soon as they surround themselves with yes-men. Does that make me a yes man?
1
I am excited about this surprise!
1
GREAT interview! Love Lukather, what a pro.
1
The problem with having a lot of friends is watching them die. Thank you for the tribute, and my condolences for your loss.
1
I am amazed you can pick out what is happening in the lick, it is a bit of a blur to me.
1
Great news that you could lend your expertise, I hope they listen to you. As far as I am concerned, using copyrighted music to train AI's should NOT fall under fair-use, and the artists whose music was used to generate a particular "AI" song need to be given credit and be compensated. My main expertise is in SW development, and I have a professional interest in copyright and AI.

We had all the best music when we were young... -- A child of the seventies

So, the music industry has come to the point where they are more than happy to take a cut from your earnings, while doing nothing at all to help musicians? Sounds like a great business plan.
1
@richardcarden4161 liar, liar, pants on fire.
1
Funny how you re-invented the flamenco guitar position from needing to fit in an Insta frame ;-)
1
Loved this song as a kid. Never realized it was so complex. I wouldn't know how to play half these chords....
1
Who ever said that us old geezers are out of touch with current music?
1
We watched "The Wall" in highschool, and it was what made me aware there were things going on down in the sub-conscious. Music from it never fails to stir me.
1
Awesome tones, mate. I genuinely thought you were playing along very softly with the original tracks, until your finishing notes. Love your bass playing -- looks like you are having fun ;-)
1
Interesting insight about career changes. And I am sure you had a laugh about the click-bait title putting us all on the wrong foot...
1
I vividly remember the grief and shock of my parents when they heard the news. I was only 13 at the time, and had to be explained who Lennon was, but it made a huge impression. Why do people do these things?
1
It is hardest of all in the 'creative arts' where criticism can not always be judged objectively...
1
Here's Bieber hoping Toto / Lukather are more gracious than some rights holders.
1
You are an inspiration!
1
That was a big compliment Mr Purdie gave you! He is right, of course. I know no-one else who can get to the root of what makes these people special: what makes them tick, the things they discovered, what they had to do to get to that level, and the struggles they had to make things work.
