A good FYI for Up to Speed - after the 2000-2003 CARB Electric Vehicle battle that saw California sued by the 43rd Administration, GM and Oil companies and defeated because of its very stringent regulations and for wanting 5% of all cars by 2005 sold in the state to be fully electric. The defeat enraged many early EV adopters and supporters (including Elon Musk) who saw the actions as big business 'Killing The Electric Car'. Also of other fishy details such as Chevron buying the shares to Texaco who bought shares from GM of Ovonics Chemistries which patented the NiMH technology used in modern electric cars of the late 90s - many electric cars that were once built were now illegal since Cobasys (Ovonics) sued Panasonic, Toyota and other brands for using their technology and only in 2004 did they succeed by prohibiting the manufacture of large capacity (50 - 98 Amp-hour) NiMH cells that offered +100 mile ranges as much as 20 years ago. If it wasn't for that blatant ass shadiness that overpowered the hand of CARB and people's appetite for battery electrics, then very much likely we wouldn't have Tesla as it is today.

  6. Not true man... Here in Europe, here in Ireland where manuals were once 3/4s what's available and automatics still considered a 'fancy' option, manuals are on the decline. Not helped by Toyota who are selling hybrids replacing diesels at 70% of their total sales margin. Manuals are disappearing in favour for dual clutch transmissions right down as far as the B segment of vehicle such as the VW Polo and Hyundai i20. The A segment car are still predominantly manual - until they become CVT and/or all electric. Even for the more sporty and premium cars like Audis, BMWs and Mercs, they have long adopted DCTs. And the truth is, manual transmissions made for their purpose don't tend to last more than 120,000 miles without some serious seeing too. Long haul motorway driving and engine braking are the biggest death nails to modern 6-speeds which aren't depreciating for +7 yo cars very well.

  12.  @darkox4172  Well, if it's easy enough for a car guy to redeem the Prius, then how outrageous is it for car guys back in the 2000s to ridicule the car for face value and create a hostile culture against it's owners and other low emissions vehicles till this day? The world is a fuck. And also, if the Prius didn't have a Toyota badge, it would suit very nicely as a Citroën (but without Toyota reliability). Like similar Citroën Kammbacks back in the day, the Prius is light and torquey. Many serious prius owners would tell you that despite the narrow wheels, quick&tight turning lock, and flexible chassis, the car is a commendable driver. Installing a chassis tunnel brace, and other minimal additions like a front tower strut or battery/rear strut brace have shown impressive body structure improvements to the stock Prius (04-09), capable of beating amateur Corvettes and 3-series in autocrosses.

  21. We need true transportation for the masses like what the Europeans did in post-WW2 recovery. Cars like the 2CV, Morris Minor, BMW issetta, Fiat 500. We have "heavy quads" like the Citroën Ami and Renault Twizy today - but they are too defined by modern full sized car tastes and end up still being too expensive compared to a second hand car. The Indian built Reva G-Wiz, and the successor e20 are more desirable if we weren't subjected to class-bias and eco-car hate. Many cheap Chinese EVs are really robust for under $6000.

  24. I wonder why Toyota hasn't made a supercharged hybrid (Atkinson cycle + supercharge = Miller engine). Electrifying that would reduce parasitic loss like electric water pumps. Over here in Europe,Nissan gave the Micra a 1.3l supercharged engine, advertised as an "eco car". It was very quietly announced and hardly remembered.

  34. I'm loving the s!ck outro music!! Excellent vid overall. I haven't seen the comments, but I guess everyone's saying that there were glossed over bits. The 10s, 40s, 60s, 70s we're significant in their own. The 2000s I would argue seen green marketing emerge (from the EV1, Prius and Insight) but they were also considered disruptive. They were polarizing to get their foot in the door. Everything I feel about cars (from an European perspective) was influence by a leap in construction advancements that allowed ambitious 90s and 80s conceptions come closer to fruition without costing much more; because plastic. Renault Avantime, need I say more? Also, surprised a certain Citroën wasn't name dropped!

  44. The Reva G-Wiz was ahead of its time. The successor, the e20 was ahead of China's market and pretty competent. And these market games ended its production as it wasn't able to penetrate the EU or Chinese markets well enough.
