  3. I wouldn't think so at all! While VW has made the 1L car possible, it's as good as a prototype since they won't bother to mass-produce it, or make it affordable. It's €111,000! Aerodynamics are no less of an EV1. The battery and motor is less than a Renault Twizy's, the engine is a 2-pot diesel. While it is made of carbon fibre, but so is the BMW i3 and that doesn't cost more than a Tesla! I can't find where the cost has gone into the XL1. It's a marketing statement like Honda's FCX Clarity.

  6. Nissan has been squandering the LEAF and electrification sorry to say. This goes back to the passive cooling of the batteries, and the reliance on an ancient chassis from a Tiida/Versa. There has only truthfully been the two generations of LEAF, the Barcelona built eNV200 and the more up to date premium Ariya on Sale. Not enough variety of EVs

  8. @JGMURPY1 They do, the Citroen DS5 and Peugeot 3008 hybrid are diesel hybrids, but are not as good in economy, but really close considering that both are large heavy cars. Volvo's C/V/S60 Plug in hybrid gets +150mpg (imp gallon). I'm guessing most makers don't make diesel hybrids is that both diesel and hybrid are expensive and a diesel exhaust system takes up more space than a petrol's.

  10. Can't wait to see how the plug-in version performs in the US. A 7-seat crossover Plug-In would surely make some positive impact as it is in Europe and Japan. That just leaves the US waiting for it for another 2 years.

  11. @NadrianATRS Wait, what? We have been ready for some time, it's just that if there's something new, new technology ( ie ) The mobile phone, we are most likely to shy away from it. I live in Ireland and already there are over 3,500 charging posts that charge two cars at the same time, and there's not over 200 EVs in the country yet. I do know the lack of charging infrastructure is bloody annoying to think of, but in the US you have a strong infrastructure planned and in construction.

  13.  @Denniss7420  Each gen of Prius had me in a love-hate situation. 1st gen was kinda cute, but awful in some ways. 2nd gen had that clean areo front look, but a shitty roundish rear. 3rd gen 2009-2012 had this hideous front with the pedo mustache grille but the back end looked nice and sharp (2013-17 adopted Toyota mid-fresh corporate face). 4th gen was controversial, cringey front, the C-pillar blindspot made me dislike the car for its visual practicality and for its ruined side profile, but them lights were something else. Now this one, I couldn't care really, the Kia Soul and Niro EV are much better.

  15.  @elhigh  Completely on the money. The Prius has completed the job it was meant to do, as the vehicle platform to mass produce the 'new' form of powertrain. Now that its guts are in the Corolla and RAV4, it has become completely integrated into almost every car for Toyota/Lexus. If Toyota (and Lexus) are clever, they should vastly improve on the Prime and make a full electric Prius (like the Ioniq) or they will lose out and plateau before 2025.

But there's also ridiculous Italian luxury boutique brand versions which spells out exactly what kind of target audience Fiat is going for. The MINI buyer.😮

  18. It will if it didn't have expensive catalytic and particular filters. Since exhaust systems in Diesel are so more expensive than petrols', not to mention servicing. Diesels are generally as expensive as Electric cars. But, Diesel Particular filters and Catalytic filters need to be changed over 5 years. If you're in Ireland or the UK, MOT and NCT will catch you out since these cars need these filters to pass emissions tests. They're not so economical in the long run.

  19. The rebates are only for electric and plug in vehicles with a battery capacity of 16kWh or more, regardless of size, price, class, etc. There's no fucking conspiracy, cool your jets. Also, read the news more, Tesla has released a leasing scheme where the monthly fee is $500 a month with no hands down, mainly because federal incentives overvalue that 'hands down' price. It's a hell a lot better than saving up to $60,000 in the bank.

  20. Not as good, in my opinion. The EV1 was much quicker to 60, around 8 seconds. The only trump card the XL1 has that there are more of them. But we'll soon see if VW wants to keep them on the roads sooner or later.

  24. Why the Kona when the original Ioniq is gone? It was a strong electric car contender when it first came out, but as a "high demand" crossover it's a rather compromised car that could just use a proper storage area.

  26. Don't worry. They have their Mirage, and if that's not enough for you, they have the Outlander PHEV that's obviously made perfectly for the American plug-in market. It'll get there as soon as Mitsubishi gets their demand under control in Europe and Japan.

Well, usually for an electric car, there would be more expensive equipment or machinery needed to make components (motor, battery, etc) of the drivetrain, so to pay them off and try not to run on a deficit, the cost of the car will need to rise. If they didn't that'll just be a bad investment of assets. It's basically profit! A car maker wouldn't make a car if it couldn't make a profit on it unless they had to, that's why compliance cars like the Fiat 500e, Fit EV and RAV4 EV exists.

  39. 35mpg avg? That's poor. I thought it was recorded at 58mpg? WTF are the TDI-fanatics on about? Also, wtf with EPA anyway? The American gallon is less and fuel consumption is far more in than in Europe. The best over here (1.6TDI Bluemotion) would do 69mpg on average.

  41. Wasn't at all impressed by the new awd prius. Nissan's been doing that to Cubes since 2004. A Prius *Prime eAWD would be far better. Lets face it, Lexus/Toyota hybrid suvs are godawful offroad. The NiMH batteries are kept small to ~36hp and can't effectively power the rear without the front hybrid setup spinning and breaking traction until anough surplus power is transferred to the rear to push. The Suby-Prime (yes, that's what this is being called) is a properly real 4wd Prius Prime, but it takes a big dive in efficiency. - Subarus are imported, not sold where I live, idk if it's sacrilege to be disconnect the front drive to save petrol so forgive me ahh. The battery in the Prime can deliver 80hp or more, meaning it would be much more flexible to have a really more noticeable rear assist and added regen. It's the usual lazy ass shame from Toyota now

  45. I doubt VW would make anything with a plug, it's VW. They only had a few poor hybrids until recently when the copped on and made the Jetta Hybrid. A Plug-In Diesel sounds perfect, and removes the disadvantages, excluding cost, of a normal diesel hybrid like the Peugeot 3008 had compared to hybrids with petrol Atkinson engines. Cost will be it's biggest disadvantage. Diesel cars are considered more expensive than petrol cars, and almost as hybrids, so add an EV drive train and a diesel together.

  49. 'Hands down' is more of a phrase for down payment, sorry for not being clearer! That's the thing, you have, I think you have a right to make some complaint about the federal incentive. But the main reason is to make electric vehicles more affordable for the average consumer. The 2013 Leaf for example. With your incentive, one can get a Leaf for $21,000. If you only have a grudge about this appling for EVs like the Tesla, then argue how the qualification should be based off vehicle price.
