  9. The minimum recommended sentence for any firearm offence is 5 years. The gun and each round of ammo plus using a gun to threaten people are each such an offence so this guy should have been sentenced for maybe 40 years (if he had a revolver) or 60 plus given the popularity of certain semi automatic pistols with these fine gents.

  12. When I hear people today say that "there is nothing for the kids to do round here" I have to laugh. I was born and lived the first 25 years of my life around a mi8le from the nearest fairly small village. I don't think I can ever remember being bored except during spells of really bad weather, but even then I would find plenty to do. In my case, the often quoted pen knives and sheath knives went further, starting with air rifles at quite an early age and progressing to small calibre shotguns by senior school.

Could all these increased deaths have something to do with the rapidly increasing population in the UK and the fact that so many younger people (30's and 40's) have a very unhealthy lifestyle and poor diet with a lot taking various substances? There are also a lot from that generation who got denied vaccines by their trendy parents who believed a lot of the rubbish being pushed out by Americans at the time. This latter fact was something that worried my other half as a health care professional (in various guises) when she was seeing the results in kids and young adults getting ill with things that were rare for the previous generation.

Too low interest rates for far too long, unrealistic expectations given us by the media (primarily TV adverts), the home improvement race and a growing "entitlement" have meant house prices have gone up more than they should. I believe in France you pay tax on how much your house has increased in value unless you are over a certain age. This tends to encourage people to stay in the same house longer and discourage adding too much to the value of your house.

  18.  @CorpusMeumRegitto  There is a very big problem with your suggestion in that very few people would be little more than third generation from any of those nations. Additionally, many genuinely white British people were not born in any of those nations. My other half's sister was born in Malaya just before her parents had to flee, her parents were Scottish by birth and English by birth. A good friend was born in Jamaica where her father was serving, her parents were truly English. Then you get those people born on or near the borders whose birth could be registered in a different country to where they were actually born.

  23. ​ @Africa1000 Strictly speaking the wheel was not discovered or even invented. It was an evolution of the use of rollers/ logs use to move heavy objects. Mind you, I still cannot comprehend how they moved the 300 to 350 ton giant menhir in the Morbihan region of France!

  27.  @KemetledAfrica  I had never heard of him until I just looked him up. I am puzzled how he could find out so much about African history to write all those books about it, but knowing his character and what some historians are like I wonder how accurate the books were. By the way, can you recommend any books about African history written by Africans before about 1850 so I can get closer to the truth?

  30. I think that there are big differences between educated, clever and intelligence. I know some very educated people (genuine rocket scientists!) who are totally useless when it comes to the real world. I know some very clever people who are very uneducated and only moderately intelligent. There are then the truly intelligent people who can work things out that they may have little knowledge of or are very creative.

  31. The first recorded powered flight, albeit unmanned was actually achieved very much earlier by an Englishman - I would have to do some looking up but I believe he was a millwright or similar.

The truth is that no one is excluded from the countryside these days, there is even good access for disabled people in many places. I know lots of British people who would never want to walk in the countryside but it's nothing to do with them feeling excluded.

  33.  @jjs3287  If you want to get in touch with the people who live and work in the countryside, try going beating with the local pheasant shoot. You get to see the real world through the eyes of people who understand it.

  34.  @jjs3287  Fair enough - at least you have a little more understanding of the real world than many do. Not all game shoots are run badly, certainly not the one I help with. And by the way, I don't think many doves get shot during pigeon control from my own experience.

  44.  @thezanzibarbarian5729  The truth is, some of these groups who seem to be bunching together are not doing themselves any favours and there is quite a lot of prejudice between them. Sometimes I wonder if some of the apparent leaders of these joined up factions could actually not have the best interests of the members at heart and are out to discredit them?
