Incidentally it is (theoretically) possible to legally own handguns and even machine guns in the UK but they are extremely tightly controlled to the point of being unrealistic, other than special pistols used for humane despatch.

It would be interesting to hear what happens when it is. It still doesn't mean that people can step out into traffic glued to their phones as seems to be a current trend.

  31. I have been to the Caribbean several times and observed that there appeared to be two distinct groups of people. One lot were the smart, clever, hard working type (think Will Smith as the typical image but a large proportion were women). The other, larger numerically, lot were the stereotypical opposite. I wonder if this goes back to the days when the latter type were captured by the former and sold as slaves? It would make sense to capture the easiest people.

The laws regarding what constitutes a weapon in the UK are very interesting - one refers to "bladed articles" - now a screw drive has a blade and makes a pretty good weapon (be careful if you have been working on your car and leave your tool box in it!) A tenon saw or a coping / fret saw has a blade, so is that a weapon? What about the staff (longish thickish stick) I carry when walking in rough terrain? Or a 1m length of 10 mm bore aluminium pipe?

  37. I always struggle with any form of anthropomorphism beyond Tales of the River bank. The looney left animal rights activists and their "meat is murder" etc. The worst thing I heard recently was when one of them tried to liken big game hunting to paedophilia!

  41. The failed rocket attack story has quite likely been made up by the 4x2s if you look at the real evidence. It might possibly have been a rocket but that doesn't mean it came from where they say or it could have been one that was shot down in flight or otherwise sabotaged. You have to remember that it is the 4x2s who control huge amounts of the media.

  46.  @josephjefferson9346  When I was at school we had a very strict maths teacher who taught us how important it was to be able to work things out for ourselves - often referred to as being by first principles. Although I had benefited from an old fashioned childhood (eg quite poor) where working things out and finding how to fix things, I am sure that teacher made a big difference to my later life when I became a very specialist mechanical engineer.
