  15. Living most of the year in rural France I can assure you British railways are no worse than the French. Of course most Brits travelling on French railways only travel on the "vanity" lines - the rest of them here are dire. Nationalising British trains will solve the "profiteering" accusations and return back to the "useless state sector" complaints. One thing's certain - the service will not improve.

  38. Lee Van Cleefe The first food banks I ever saw were in Holland in the 1970s. Then in Belgium, then France. It was twenty years before they appeared here so in terms of European poverty we're twenty years behind the trend.
