We all have a sense that society should be an impartial arbiter (judge) in life, not really picking favorites. So people are VERY attuned to the idea that they might be treated more harshly than their neighbor. This would be the most likely mitigating circumstance as to why the average person, Javert the Parole officer in this allegory, would be so strongly tied to seeking justice, to the point of seeming merciless. A combo of HIS Fairness bias in conjunction with society's fairness bias. it also could stem from himself or a close relative being punished while he saw others spared (or evaded).   50. Also wrong! Its rather complicated to go into how we have been manipulated into becoming a consumer culture. OUR economy, and those economies that are considered advanced are consumer economies, are based on wasteful & impulsive spending and a system that teaches people to outsource EVERYTHING as opposed to be self-reliant. We STILL show aspects of scarcity mindset (hoarding, as 1 example) both economically but in many other areas too. Much can be said about it, but no one wants to read a novel.
