@KristenRowenPliske At the founding of the US, and for maybe 50 years after, there were so many German speaking people, German could have been an official language! Germans settled in huge numbers, especially in the frontier areas that our country was expanding in. We owe quite a debt to those German settlers for helping us people those areas and expand. Behind the English, Scots irish, the Germans are the most numerous ancestors, and why there was so much fear of the influence they might have during the world wars. The city i live in now had a vibrant german community that was very much out in the open. They had to go quiet, to almost hide themselves during the World wars, to ensure they werent seen as traitors. Unfortunately, their mistreatment has largely gone unnoticed, and i think that is because they were European white, instead of people of color. But the german-Americans experienced back lash to varying degrees.
