  1. I am a 50 yo American and remember being taught that JFK misspoke there! This was entirely eye opening to me. Now, to the last 4 yrs of separation between Germany & the US. I need to offer you a differing perspective on the Trump administration then what Leftists will claim. The Progressive establishment, which Frau Merkel is a part, came together to oppose Donald Trumps populist movement. That was really the only significant break in relations that im familiar with. The ginned up animosity towards him by marxist-leaning Progressives, especially in the media! Just how quickly and uniformly the world media could agree to oppose, denounce a leader should be frighteningly instructive! our national medias are more propaganda then we realize!

  2.  @KristenRowenPliske  At the founding of the US, and for maybe 50 years after, there were so many German speaking people, German could have been an official language! Germans settled in huge numbers, especially in the frontier areas that our country was expanding in. We owe quite a debt to those German settlers for helping us people those areas and expand. Behind the English, Scots irish, the Germans are the most numerous ancestors, and why there was so much fear of the influence they might have during the world wars. The city i live in now had a vibrant german community that was very much out in the open. They had to go quiet, to almost hide themselves during the World wars, to ensure they werent seen as traitors. Unfortunately, their mistreatment has largely gone unnoticed, and i think that is because they were European white, instead of people of color. But the german-Americans experienced back lash to varying degrees.

Thats the ENTIRE point of this campaign to discuss it, ad nauseum. there are too many differences between what Germany experienced and what the US, Canada, and UK experienced, to name just 3! Its comparing apples and oranges here. The reason why its brought up about numbers is: because EVERYONE wants to poke at Germany for her crimes, but stay strangely silent about the OTHER countries crimes? Why are we NOT complaining daily to Russia to apologize for her crimes? Because the Left admires Russia?soviet Union and tries to hide or negate them! The WHOLE topic in North america is entirely politically motivated and NOT motivated on the lofty Idealism that the Left purports! its TOXIC!

  5. I originate from your part of Pennsylvania( South central PA) and I am descended from Gingrichs. I was told our people came from an area know as the Palatinate in Germany( although it wasnt a unified Germany in those days. Pennsylvania german is definitely a low German variant, as i struggled mightily trying to use a German dictionary to read documents. Many grave yards have head stones entirely in German, especially in Lebanon county where i did the most of my searching.

He loved living in Montreal. He also recounted a story where his grand father, who was born in Algeria (when it was still a French department, state) visited Louisianna and spoke intelligible French with a local. He found that a surreal moment. i took a few liberties in my brief translation here, but it is the gist, to keep it brief.

  13.  @bongdonkey  If this interests you at all, i highly recommend a book called 'The Story of French' by Jean'Benoit Nadeau. It is a big book, but a surprisingly quick read and it recounts how the northern french dialect became the Linguafranca of France and it also delves into the many French dialects across the world, and especially into the Canadien French dialect! The author is French canadien and he recounts some funny stories of how this variant is looked down upon by some in Europe. But as an anglophone first, this was NOT only a problem of French canadiens. English in the colonies was looked down upon by our European cousins as well. A well known publisher in the 19th century had remarked on this phenomenon.

Germany was the ONLY country who was forced to by outside forces to come to terms with it, or risk censure by the international community. because there was NO foreign intervention into the US or Canada, neither country was forced externally to give a reckoning on the order of Germany. Japan committed atrocities near on par with Germany during the war and even to this very day, gives the most tepid apologies to China and other affected Asian countries. they also complain that they dont think Japan has sincerely apologized for what its done! I believe Shinzo Abe has probably done the most to attempt to heal wounds. Germany is UNIQUE in the entire world for the public reckoning it has had to give, and comparing ANY other nation on the planet to it is foolhardy, to put it mildly. I can only imagine most of you are Leftists, with the way you seem biased against the US without a fuller understanding of why it is this way. Only a Leftist could be SO blinded by idealism that he/she/zhe could be so foolish! By the way, Russia/The USSR ALSO did some pretty atrocious things during the war and after it! How dont hear the groundswell of complaints from Leftists for them to give such a firm public reckoning that Germany has been expected to do, and that the US is constantly shamed into doing. How strange this is? Any Leftist willing to address this?

The Germans seem to have done what most western countries do, and get friendly with one world despot that we all would agree is a bad person, normally because of business or something.(something that the popular media wont report b/c they want the common people to hold certain opinions)

We have been taught that, we are typical Americans for being so insolated and so unaware of the wider world, and that was hilarious proof from our President! Canadians still LOVE to chide us for this and to laugh at how they know more about the US then we know about Canada. Having lived in Pennsylvania, i am not at all surprised. in fact I would not be shocked if German was the 2nd most spoken language in the US at its founding (as a country, not the colonial periods). From my learning of history, I believed that from the start of the German Union, that Germans grasping for empire was a thorn in the side of the established powers. Thats why they wrangled so much over the German Unification question. With all that industrial might & all those brilliant minds in one place, they knew they had a force of nature to contend with. But I see how going after a Rothschild could make one Persona Non Grata very quickly! thank you for the lesson!

  31. Everyone hears things differently. If one isnt exposed to many variants/examples, then people know what they experienced. Not every one in the US has that new York accent or Boston accent or the southern drawls. but if some like one over the other, that is their taste. I understand you want expose them to the full palate of variations, but also be patient with them too.

  35. My Generation grew up with Dieter from Sprockets, of Saturday Night Live fame! that has been my stereotypical view of Germans. LOL I grew up in an area that had a marked Amish influence, so we also wasnt quite so invested in the 'all germans are hit.ler meme' the way other people might have been.

  39. Marxism has seeped into every western nation and their hallmark is to rebel against authority and its institutions. Largely this is what they instigate amongst the youth to do. Youth are naturally given to want to part ways ideologically with their elders; its part of the maturing process of kids to divergent views from their elders. Every generation seems to experience this. I doubt the youth of that time were less concerned about true Nazi ideology, but were merely expressing their independence, and taking the polar opposite view of their parents was an avenue to do this. Ask those people as adults, if they still hold those views of their youth and most people wouldnt. We outgrow the foolishness of our youth (well, most of us)!

  42. I'm 50 yrs old, and when I was in school most of us were expected to study a foreign language. I am not sure when this stopped of if my area of the country was special. In my area, we had a large population of German ancestry, so German was offered in High school. it wasnt difficult to find cemeteries with the stones written in German.

  44. I'm very sorry for this. This is extremely embarrassing that our opinion of Germany has been SO influenced by our propaganda machine here in the US. Unfortunately i was guilty of a similar, but less egregious (in my opinion) example of assuming the highlight of Germany was THAT moment in time. And of course, the Germans i met were VERY patient and tactful in the face of my faux pas! Those of us of German ancestry realize there is much more to this. be patient while we help our fellow Americans over come their brain washing.

  45. To be fair though, New york accents sound harsh to many Americans and many of us have LOVED to make fun of it! I got teased a lot for my slight Boston accent, until i lost it. We had a teacher in school with the New york accent and she got mimicked ENDLESSLY, the poor woman! LOL its just something people love to do!
