Not as a direct boycott but with western companies pulling out offices, manufacturing, and retail, ending flights to China, high tariffs, banning of certain products being sold there. The same is being done from western aligned eastern nations such as Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and the Philippines. Even Thailand which plays all sides has ended tax exemptions on cheap Chinese imports, making them a lot less competitive.

  19.  @scramjet4610  I go out of my way to not buy anything made in China but can’t avoid it a lot of times so I at least avoid any Chinese brands and retailers. At least then they make the smallest possible profit. Also, you don’t need to boycott 100%, Even a 10% drop in exports would be catastrophic to China.

Items that cost in the thousands are expensive enough that people who don’t have much money see it as expensive but cheap enough that they can still buy it if they want to make a bad life choice. True luxury items like this start at an order of magnitude higher cost, and even then those are the same gimmick for people with a 7-8 figure net worth. When you get into brands that cater to billionaires, it’s mostly bespoke, from, fashion to furniture, to yachts. Not much is off the shelf.

There are real coffee shops with good coffee, Starbucks is a desert shop that sells milkshakes that have some coffee in them. The few regular coffee drinks they sell are average at best, massively overpriced, and most people don’t even go there for that, they go for the liquid cake drinks.

I’ve even seen Chinese tour guides get fed up with their fellow countrymen over how awful they behave. Of course, they’re not the worst nationality but top 3 for sure.

This whole time buying oil from Putin, but pretending to align with the West to get the manufacturing outflow from China. India is another version of Turkey, they’ll sell out anyone for their own short term gain. Now you can just use the existing models from OpenAI and Anthropic to train your models directly and save a lot of work. They took a lot of shortcuts and I’d bet good money they tuned the model just to do well on benchmarks which is a major reason why the benchmarks don’t mean anything

That stated figure is just some oversimplified number calculated by multiplying the supposed number of hours of running the supposed GPUs, by the average cost of leasing that same compute with some Chinese cloud provider. There’s far more that goes into training than just the GPU compute. And this is all assuming you believe their claimed figures, which there is zero reason to and a lot of reasons not to.

And nobody’s saying western companies and governments don’t lie, but the difference is you’ve got a good level of accountability and ability to report the truth in the West. A level unimaginable in China. But even take the whole China vs The West angle out of this and the whole DeepSeek setup still smells rotten. Even if the company behind it was a Western company it would look like a scam. I mean, it’s a hedge fund that just happens to release something completely outside of its financial model which could burst the bubble for overpriced AI related stocks. Something they could easily capitalize on by shorting these stocks, which is a move that is completely what you’d expect from a company which makes all its money trading financial instruments
