Prison guard unions have far more clout as do the pharma and alcohol industries, all of which lobby against weed. And the weed industry has spent more in most of the recent years lobbying the federal government than the private prison industry. Last year the weed industry spent about the same with over 80 lobbyists. Private prisons don’t have nearly the clout people like to think they do. It’s a tiny industry compared to so many others. Its entire industry generates less revenue than Apple makes off its watches… in just one quarter.
