  1. @Heather The exchange rate only affects imports. Goods produced within Russia aren't affected by exchange rates. Russia is a net exporter of food; they are self-sufficient. They don't have to import meat, wheat, potatoes, etc. for fast food. It's like the two times I visited England, with wildly different exchange rates. It didn't affect the English at all except for goods imported from America and it affected me, as an American tourist, because I had to pay a lot more for everything when the exchange rate rose for the pound.

  2. There are McDonald's in many countries, and they're all different according to local tastes. Pakistani McDonald's are different from Japanese McDonald's which are different from French McDonald's. Quality also varies depending on local food regulations. In other words, a McDonald's burger in Paris isn't going to be like a McDonald's burger in Boston. And yes, there is McDonald's in Paris. In fact, there's one right next to the Moulin Rouge. Edit: It was hard to find a photo, but there's an article on wordpress: "Cemetery, Moulin Rouge, Rat, McDonalds (in that order)." I was there in 2008 and drove right past it.

  3. I agree. I think it's schadenfreude. They are riddled with jealousy that Russia is doing so well and they don't want to admit that Russia will be very little affected by the sanctions, but Europe and North America will suffer. Russia is almost entirely self-sufficient (unlike us), highly industrialized (unlike us), and quite prosperous. That surprises the ignorant and they are in deep denial of reality. Russia supplies the west with food, crop fertilizer, steel, oil, natural gas, and many other things, and the nasty people will soon realize that we've shot ourselves in the foot.

  5. Who are you trying to kid? All along, western governments were certain that sanctions would destroy the entire Russian economy within weeks of enacting them. They said so out loud! They were bragging that the Russian people would have empty supermarkets, no cars or planes, and no computers or phones. Some people in this comment section are still believing it. Those same governments, however, were woefully ignorant of the great strides that Russia has made to ensure its self-sufficiency and rapid industrialization in the last decade, thanks in large part to Putin's wise domestic policies. It's the west who bit the hand that literally fed it and will find themselves, ourselves, in real trouble come the winter and the next harvest.

  18. Modern Russia isn't as poor as you think. Many people live like middle class Americans and Europeans. Watch channels by ordinary Russian families. There are some that have been making videos for years. Their supermarkets look like American supermarkets, and their restaurants look very much like American restaurants, and their shopping centers look like American shopping centers. Many regular Russian families have weekend cabins in the country, besides their home in town. They drive modern cars, wear modern clothes, and have televisions, computers, and smartphones. They live like us. Except not as many people in America have weekend homes in the country.

Russian companies are starting to step in and take the place of those western companies, and that will keep more Russian money in Russia for a long time to come. That's a good thing. Europe needs Russian natural gas, and they just agreed to pay for it in rubles. The Russian ruble gets stronger and stronger. You should listen to something besides the msm echo chamber, which does nothing but spew nonsense for views.

Russian companies have sprung up or expanded to take over where foreign brands left. Don't feel sorry for the Russians, because they aren't the ones who will end up suffering from the sanctions. Putin ensured that Russia is nearly immune from western sanctions, a policy he put in effect after the sanctions of 2012. Feel bad for the west. Many American economists and political analysts are pointing out that the sanctions are cementing relationships between middle-eastern and eastern countries, having the probable consequence of knocking the dollar off its pedestal as the world's reserve currency. Without that status, we have nothing. The dollar isn't backed by gold, so without world-reserve currency status, we are screwed.

The west needs the east far more than Russia needs us. That's just fact. At least in America, we've outsourced most of our manufacturing and a lot of our food. Supply chain problems are getting worse and worse. My husband works for a multinational company who makes municipal water treatment facilities and the lead time to get parts is more than half a year instead of a week or two like it used to be. If it gets any worse, fresh drinking water will become a thing of the past throughout America.

  43. Putin has a 90% approval rate. Russia has never been more prosperous. Also, the Ukraine operation is a rescue mission as far as the Russians are concerned. All Putin asked was for Ukraine to remain neutral like they promised and to stop shelling Donbas. He asked for 8 years. What happened? Ukraine allowed NATO and the Pentagon to build 46 bioweapons labs in Ukraine. 46. That's according to the Pentagon, who lied about it for years until recently. That's not just a threat to Russia, but to the whole world. Also, in 2014, Donbas held a referendum and voted to go with Russia after the coup. Instead of honoring the vote, the government of Ukraine chose to kill them. They've been shelling Donbas for the last eight freaking years. Putin decided, rightly so, that enough was enough. We're the bad guys. Time to face reality because the rest of the world sees it. They can't wait for the downfall of the US. We're in for a lot of hurt.
