  6. Detroit's police department operates at 1/3 capacity, and several years back, they were given a 10% pay cut. Response time for 911 calls can be as long as an hour. Things are so bad, they warn that people who visit the city - at any time - do so at their own risk.

  7. I'm from Oakland, CA. To me, Detroitans sound like Midwesterners. The Midwest accent sounds somewhat Southern, but has a flatness to it. Detroitans have a unique inflection in the way they pronounce oi.

  9. That's what puzzles me. I would have thought New Orleans would be worse, since it has long been considered one of the unhealthiest, most corrupt cities in the US. At least Detroit used to be paradise.

  13.  @showmestatefinest5412  - they're trying to gentrify it. Though it is outrageously expensive now, it's still one of the most dangerous places in the country. When I visited Oakland in 2004, it had a maximum security prison vibe I didn't remember from the 1980s. I'm sure the vibe is even worse today.

  23. Both. Detroit started going downhill after the 1967 riots. It was hit the hardest during the recession in the early 1980s, from which it never really recovered. The 2008 recession really did it in.

  35. Sombra Chan - I had the misfortune of living in East Oakland when I was a child. I lived in other parts, including Piedmont, which wasn't much better. That was back before it became the war zone it is today. Compare this video, and the ones of Oakland, to Detroit and Camden. They all rank among the most dangerous cities in the US, but this video and Oakland are not as dilapidated. BTW, I'm a woman.
