Isn't it the case that aggressors were hardly ever defeated directly by economic sanctions, but more often the effect of the sanctions was to force them to dramatically escalate the war in a way which made their defeat inevitable? This happened with Germany in World War I, when it responded to the British naval blockade with unrestricted submarine warfare, which dragged America into the war, thus guaranteeing Germany's defeat. It also happened with Japan in World War II: America cut off Japan's oil supply in protest at Japanese atrocities in China, and Japan's response was try to conquer its way to the oil-rich Dutch East Indies. This was expected to draw in the US Pacific Fleet (because the American-occupied Phillipines stood between Japan and the Dutch East Indies), hence the attack on Pearl Harbor...

  26. I don't think Hitler really believed that any state had a reason to exist beyond "might makes right". He was basically a fundamentalist Social Darwinist, which is why in March 1945 (when it was clear the war was lost) he ordered the complete destruction of Germany itself with his "Nero Order". In his eyes only the Master Race deserved to survive, and that clearly wasn't the Germans because they'd lost the war...

  33. Actually "czarina" or even "tsarina" isn't a word in Russian: the feminine of tsar is tsaritsa . Although after 1721 Russian monarchs were styling themselves as Imperator or (if female) Imperatritsa -- these words are derived from the same Latin root as the English words Emperor/Empress.

  41. India's position in today's alliance system is similar to that of Russia's during the Dreikaiserbund of late 19th-century Europe. The collapse of the Dreikaiserbund created the bipolar Europe of World War I with the UK, France and Russia facing off against Germany and Austria. Similarly if today's India was to abandon Russia and go all-in with the West the result would be a new bipolar world order, with the US, EU, UK, Japan, South Korea, India and Saudi Arabia on one side, facing off against China, Russia, Iran and North Korea on the other.

  48.  @Mountain_Lake_Adventures  Most global South countries aren't supportive of Ukraine: the ones which are commodity exporters are coining it in thanks to the shortages caused by Russia's war, while the ones that aren't are desperately poor and could really use some discounted Russian oil, gas or (stolen from Ukraine) grain.
