Cut out what you can. We cut dairy, any kind of alcohol, processed foods. We bake bread, make soups. Meat is more of a condiment and flavoring now. I have a long commute and sometimes I sleep in the car overnight rather than spend gas money. We only heat the kitchen and bath end of the house( it has the plumbing).
Grocery outlet stores have eggs for cheap, lots of close out items, bacon for $3 a pound, tortilla packages for 97 cents, frozen broccoli for 99 cents, etc.
Safeway has a section for 50% off the last lowest price for meat or chicken. So we buy a pork loin for $4, add it to rice and lentils or other beans, eat like that or wrap in a tortilla.
I volunteer in a food bank and they give us what is leftover at the end of the day because of the sell-by date. You can blanch and freeze vegetables, eggs can be pickled to last longer ( healthy snack).
We carry a thermos for coffee or tea.
Plain oatmeal is cheap- I use it to make a pie crust to make a quiche or pie.
Look around your area- sometimes there are fruit trees that the owners don’t harvest from. I made tons of apple cider and apple butter and sauce.
Good luck.
