I really feel for this girl. She knows she has access to a sizeable portion of money thanks to everyone who generously donated. But at the same time, she want's to do "right" by everyone who donated, and so stays frugal with the funds. It must feel like a great responsibility. It's sad that it doesn't fix the situation right away, but at the same time it is a good sign that she takes this generosity of strangers very seriously. I wish I could "coach" her on a regular basis. Help her with paperwork and all that. It comes easy to people without these mental disorders but can be really challenging for someone in her situation to do it alone. :(

You're a good man Nobita-San, as is everyone who donated to help this woman. It's very sad that she haven't been able to arrange some accomodations yet. But these donations have NOT been in vain. Mental health problems take time to adress and will be a struggle for her. It's important to be supportive of her efforts right now. Going to the clinic for counseling is a huge step in the right direction.

I guess bike theft is a very high priority crime in Tokyo

I was always curious about the evolution of single eyelids and double eyelids. I don't really feel concerned about the aesthetics of it since both look fine to me. What intrigues me is why some humans developed single eyelids overtime while others developed double eyelids. Certain physical features in humans aren't present merely by accident after all. They exist because there was some sort of natural benefit to it. I also think that this biological perspective makes it easier for me to appreciate the uniqueness of different physical features in different ethnic groups. To me it's like these features are trying to tell a story of where these ethnicities come from and what enviromental and biological factors shaped them into how they look today.

I never understood the "immature = attractive" thing. Even from anime and hentai you could find female characters who were both mature and sexy at the same time. On a personal note I always found them more appealing than the immature "kawaii" female characters. They would just come across as annoying to me.

Nobita-san, you're talking to her in a very constructive manner. Reinforcing the point that she shouldn't feel pressured. It really goes a long way with people struggling with manic depression and ADHD.

Nobita-san: As a foreigner, my impression is that aspects of Japanese culture are very conformist and collectivist. While it must certainly have served a purpose of creating social harmony, would you say that maybe it is a bit excessive? I can't help but think that the overbearing conformist values, being so prevalent might be a root cause of the problem. And it's not just affecting children in schools, but also adults in the workplace. Reputation seems very important to Japanese people. Maybe it would be prudent to ask them: do they really wish their country to be seen as a place where overbearing conformity serve to make children and adults unhappy and miserable to the point of comitting suicide? It would be interesting to hear more Japanese people talk about conformity and expressing how it affects them in their daily lives, and if it really helps them to feel happy or not.

With the risk of sounding like a presumptuous foreigner, I hope Japan can change in this regard. If you can be friendly and helpful to a foreigner without much personal sacrifice, surely such charity can be extended to your fellow Japanese as well.

That's why you need labour unions with connections to the government. If any HR person said ANY of those things to me in my country, the Union would be so far up their ass that I'd have them begging on their knees for mercy. But in america, "the free market" is the utopian ideal. Well HR workers like that are a natural consequence of free markets, sadly.

The problem in Japan is that people are too accepting of commercializing social interaction in ways that other cultures wouldn't dream of. In which other countries do you "rent" friends, grandparents, a girlfriends/boyfriends, womens laps to rest your head on and so on? It's way past common prostitution at this point.
67
It's really unfair how single dad's who are really doing their best are met with such prejudice. Any single parent really. They have a big challenge in front of them as it is. It's so unecessary to add to their troubles by being prejudiced towards them. Help them if you can. Give them some praise or words of encouragement if you can't. It's really not that difficult.
66
This is why people should be encouraged to break out on their own. "Agencies" are becoming a thing of the past due to the fact that internet platforms offer people the means to publish and promote themselves. Without slimy agents or their shady contracts.
65
@Ann Nifödova Communism is no solution. In fact it will make it worse. HR workers might be stupid. But your government boss in a communist state will be legally allowed to beat you and throw you in a gulag if you don't comply.

You should've seen that coming. Maybe if the woman in her 40's already have kids from a previous marriage, then she might just be looking for something fun and temporary. But a single and childless woman without a husband... Yeah she's most likely looking to settle down. And at age 40 her biological clock isn't just ringing, it's screaming. So unless you are prepared to marry and settle down, then you shouldn't waste her or your own time and just call it quits early.

People don't take a seat right next to strangers in my country as well if there are other seats available. We value personal space here. If the train or bus is packed and there is nowhere else to sit, we'll take a seat next to a stranger. But if there are plenty of seats available, it would just be awkward to purposefully take a seat right next to someone that you don't know.

Uh no, I never assumed it to be an awesome job. I assumed it to be a pretty disgusting and degrading job that eats away at the mental health of it's workers and that the job itself sould be discouraged as harshly as possible. I don't feel sad for anyone in the industry. If they expected glamour and wealth for simply being born with genitals and using them in front of a camera, they thought wrong.

It's not unreasonable that South Koreans would take a dim view of the Empire of Japan. But I think we can all agree that Japan is a different country today compared to it's imperial days. So it makes sense that Koreans have a positive view of Japan today.

A friend of mine had the custody of her children contested and the custody was eventually handed over to the father. She had no criminal history whatsoever, but the father had. Yet the courts considered the father to be the better parent. She had visitation rights, but the father constantly stalled and refused to cooperate so she barely got to see her children at all, and the courts did nothing to help her. Eventually, the father stabbed her to death and almost stabbed the present social worker to death too, and is now serving time in jail. This is the man with a prior history of both assault, robbery and dealing drugs, which the courts considered the "better parent" of the two. This is what courts to to children and their parents in the world.

I dated a couple of MILF's when I was younger. I was in my early twenties and the ages of the women I dated ranged from 32-42. But I can't say it had anything to do with "motherly affections" or anything like that. Nor that I did it out of having some sort of MILF-fetish. In my case it was more seeing the women my age and how annoying, neurotic, insecure and self-absorbed they all were. So I just couldn't find anyone interesting or who I could connect with well through conversation. I had a much better connection with older women I met online.
36
I don't think foreigners should be entitled to tax payers money being spent on teaching them their history or culture. You live in Japan, therefore you should be learning primarily about Japan in school. If you want your children to learn history and culture of Korea, you should move there.
33
To be fair: american police don't have the luxury of dealing with polite and well mannered Japanese citizens most of the time. They have to deal with suspects that are very likely to pull a gun on them.
32
Got nothing against gyaru. Sometimes the make-up can be strange or too excessive for my taste. But I like how they seem to be pretty up-beat and expressive in general rather than overly shy, timid and polite like most regular japanese girls seem to be. I imagine that you'd definitely have a good time with gyaru.
25
Insane people can act with premaditation though. They may be perfectly normal in every other regard, except for their mental illness. Like shizophrenia, where it doesn't really afflict the individual person in sucj a way where they can't think or plan actions at all. It's just that they're plagued with extremely realistic hallucinations that will influence their actions and behaviour. That said, I don't really believe that the arsonist is insane. Sounds more like an extremely disgruntled employee.
24
@ian_s7481 Uh no? It doesn't disprove evolution at all. It proves that evolution take different pathways depending on what enviromental influences look like.
24
Your Majesty, Dude, the Finnish completely yeeted a numerically superior soviet force that had more tanks, artillery and planes than the finnish did. "Wrecked" is definitely appropriate in this context.
24
The definition of a NEET seems to also exclude entrepeneurs/business owners. If you start up your own company, you are neither an employee, in training or in education. You are an owner. It seems insane to dismiss company owners as "lazy" to me.
24
One question that may be worth asking in this context is this: how many Japanese people would the Americans need to kill to win the war if they hadn't used nuclear weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki? While these bombings are some of the ugliest days in human history which the entire world has to work really hard to avoid repeating, the american military command saw no end to the killing had they stuck to conventional warfare for the rest of the pacific war. There are estimates that the Japanese casualties would've been tenfold had americans stuck with conventional weapons, and it would not just have been Japanese soldiers dying as a result, because civilians will always perish in war. It is important to remember that Imperial Japan enforced a very harmful and dangerous fanaticism which put an extreme amount of civilians in danger. EVERYONE, man, woman, child, old or young were expected to lay down their lives in defense of the empire. And conventional bombs, artillery and machine guns were not enough to make Hirohito or the japanese generals to think otherwise. It's not an excuse or a comfort in any way. But perhaps it is a way to understand why the Americans did what they did.
23
@CarrotCakeMake No it wouldn't for me. After all, it wasn't the employees who hypothetically stole his work, but executives. So if he had, for example, brought a gun to work and shot the executives of the company guilty of the theft, I might've changed my opinion a little, even if murder would've been an extremely rash action. But he doused the entire place in gasoline and lit it on fire, not caring about whether guilty or innocent people would get hurt. That's unforgivable.
22
If you only make 770 dollars per month working in Japan, then it's not the fault of tourists. You're working for a really bad employer. But I doubt many Japanese people demand higher wages, considering their strict adherence to hierarchies.
22
Cheating is greedy. It means you're too lazy to accept the inconvenience of filing for divorce before dating other people while still indulging in extramarital affairs. Even if you don't love your spouse anymore and the marriage makes you unhappy, at least be respectful of your spouse and the happy parts of the marriage you once had and say that you want to file for a divorce. And for goodness sake, make damn sure to tell your children that it's not their fault that you want to divorce your spouse and that you still love them unconditionally.
22
What kind of STD was it? The reason for asking is that a few STD's lay dormant without any outward symptoms for years, so a person can be a carrier for it without knowing about it and infect a current partner with an STD contracted from a previous relationship. I'm not saying your ex didn't cheat on you. I'm just saying that contracting an STD from a spouse isn't always definitive proof of infidelity.
21
@pirotess2 What you do is, you tell the Japanese companies that you don't do charity, and your time is to be handsomely compensated.
21
@Qtipz123 Nobody in here did. And I for one wouldn't blame someone for wanting to get rich. What I do is to blame people who think they can get rich while not working towards it. And no, having sex in front of a camera does not qualify as work.
19
@emmanuelarevalo2018 Not to the same extent as in Japan. You can see this statistically. Conformity in schools exist to a degree all over the world. Thr suicide cases seem to correlate with the level of conformity in society.
18
@robertchandler2063 Nothing wrong with parents ensuring that their daughter isn't shacking up with some deadbeat loser.
17
Honestly, Japanese people have massive communication problems in general. The entire culture is steeped in it. The path to a happy relationship requires open and honest communication. But good luck trying to get a Japanese person to open up about their true feelings and wants.
17
@OllamhDrab Trust me, it's better than the opposite. If your cops, doctors and nurses mostly just sit around at their jobs with little to do, and having to actively look for something to do, then your society is pretty well off.
16
Yeah, or make up a "bogus" employment. Maybe Nobita could "hire" her as an assistant or reporter. She has donation money for the time being, so he probably wouldn't have to pay her in reality. In many cases like this, landlords are happy as long as everything looks good on paper. And for her sake, she'll probably be in a better position to get and hold down an actual job when she has a place to live.
15
@japanlifestory I don't see a lack of globalization as something negative. In fact, resisting globalization is only healthy for a society. A country should strive towards being independent and provide for it's own.
14
@Ceasarsalate I'm not leaving. Whatever taxes are paid in Japan should serve the public interests of Japan. Not fund the special interests of a small foreign minority. ESPECIALLY NOT when it only serves indoctrinating people into resenting the country they live in. Multiculturalism should be abolished on all fronts.
13
Hehe, well you're about to have something much worse than tourists to worry about i'm afraid. The Japanese government has recently jumped aboard the "inclusivity" and "pro-immigration" train, with a program aiming for importing almost 900.000 foreigners to work in Japan each year.
13
@Black.Spades The fact that you can make an income of a hobby does not make it a job. "All those people" you're refering to are a tiny nearly insignificant minority compared the millions of people who do acting as a hobby. Calling acting a "job" is like saying that your average garage band is "working for a living" when they practice for their next dive bar perfomance which will pay them nothing but beer and peanuts. There's a reason why smart parents tell their kids to stay tf out of pursuing "art careers" and going to "acting school". It's because hardly any of the graduates will have the luck and connections to get a paying job where their education will be of any importance. A job is something you can educate yourself for and get. When only a tiny minority of graduates actually get the job they pursued through education, and mostly did so out of luck and knowing the right people, then it's no longer a job. It's just a person being priviliged enough to be able to earn an income through their hobby/passion.
12
@nate6045 Xenophobia is healthy. We've seen what rampant multiculturalism always lead to: chaos, destruction and internal conflicts.
11
I have no sympathy whatsoever for the women getting scammed. They should know better than trying to make money off other peoples failed marriages or lonelyness.
10
@klaudinegarcia8932 Don't get me wrong: immature/dumb can certainly be cute. Like when kids or even dogs or cats do something silly and not too clever, it's endearing and heartwarming. But what I have a hard time relating to is how some Japanese seem to view "cute" as sexually arousing :S When I try to think of arousing things, then "cute" is nowhere near the first thing that spring to mind for me. In fact, it's more of a turn-off. And if an adult woman run around acting "cute" as a way to come across as sexually appealing it only has the complete opposite effect for me.
10
@Capt.Steele Take a look what has happened to Paris in France and Stockholm in Sweden or why not London in England. London is now minority english. Only 37 percent of it's population consist of native englishmen with the rest being foreigners.
10
@pirotess2 If cubans are so happy with communism... Why do so many of them FLEE to the U.S?
10
@pirotess2 Yeah, probably. You have to compete with millions of Japanese people with a slave-mentality. But this slave mentality is going to be disastrous for Japan in a very short while, as the young people become a minority and they all have to financially support the elderly who can't work.
10
@Ann Nifödova Ok Mr. Tinfoil hat. Make sure to be careful of the mind reading 5G rays used by the lizard people who secretly control the world...
10
@kristoffer8609 It's not that close to zero. There's IVF and other procedures that do allow women in their 40's to have children.
