I only use a laptop and it is plugged in about 16 hours a day so this info was really informative. I had often wondered if I was killing the thing or not. When I shut it down at night I just unplug it. Thanks for looking in my head. JimE

Thanks Leo! To be honest, OneDrive "scares" me. At 79, not tech savvy and having tried it once, I found it to be more than I wanted and controlling to me. So the question, can I basically do the same thing with a little SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD or similar unit setting on my computer? If so, where doing I find info on how to sync it like I would with OneDrive? As always, thanks for the useful and inspiring information. JimE PS: Yes, I realize that have the "backup" right next to the computer does not supply the same benefits as having it off sight.

Thanks Leo. Perhaps you could address the in's and out's of Last Pass. Especially the the senior community. that my not be too computer savvy. My biggest fear is that it will screw up somehow and I will be locked out of everything. JimE

Learned something again. Thanks Leo! JimE

I currently use POP3. Can I just "flip a switch" and move my Thunderbird to IMAP? JimE

Leo - What does a scammer really "look" like or are they all different?? Some 13 year old setting in a dark closet in their parents basement and wearing a black hoodie? A group of people setting in a large room and all working on the same individual simultaneously? Someone over seas who just purchased a list of personal info off the dark web and now has to translate it to get started on scamming folks? Someone who works for a company like Google, a bank or other business and is trying to scam their clients? Family or relatives? Is there any commonality scammers have other than to steal other folks stuff? JimE

More important info. Thanks Leo! JimE

How true Leo. But, at 80 years old, I many times long for the good ole days when we all had time to stop and smell the roses. Like going through the Sears Catalog, ordering something and then waiting in anticipation for 7-10 days for it to arrive. Or instead of watching that movie or video on my phone I would hop on my bike and go to the local theater and for 12 cents watch a Gene Autry or Roy Rogers movie............... in black and white. I could go on forever. Today's world has gotten so small and is sometimes so instantaneous we don't have time to enjoy it or work for it. JimE

Thanks again Leo? Now I can relax........ for two years. JimE

That was interesting and informative Leo. Still learnin'. Thanks. JimE

@askleonotenboom Size - In my price range $4-600 they seem to be 256GB. I do not run a business, not a gamer or the like. I use the computer for a few basic Word/Excel tasks, web surfing, picture storage and email. I currently have a 1TB hard drive and it is about 50% full after 5 years of usage. Thanks to all. JimE

Well. There! Learned something 'new" again. I'll be an 81 year old geek before long.😊 Thanks Leo. JimE

Thanks for another educational experience.

More great info. Thanks Leo! JimE

Would have thought that after all these years someone would have developed a way go get all of A to B to include programs, settings and the like. But then again, I'm on the extreme lower end of the knowledge pool when it comes to how things really operate. Good stuff Leo. JimE

That was helpful but I'm still unsure of One Drive. Where does "sync" come to play in this equation or am I barking up the wrong tree? Thanks. JimE

3:12 "The only place that I typically don't recommend keeping things as up to date as possible is drivers." You didn't say why? Is it harmful if I do? Is it done automatically? Should I avoid it completely? Thanks. JimE

Thanks for another good lesson Leo. I had no idea. JimE

That was valuable. When I go to buy a new laptop, how do I know if it has S Mode or not? Thanks. JimE

I just set up a new laptop and did the MS account thing when doing so. What are the advantages of one over the other. Are there real negatives with just using the MS account? Thanks. JimE

Thanks Leo. Currently waiting on new laptop as I type. Can the backup be done with EaseUS ToDo downloaded on a thumb drive from another computer and then just inserted into the new computer? JimE PS: Just watched "How Should I Back Up a New Computer?" March 23, 2023 and you gave me the answer. Thanks again. JimE

No way of knowing, but it would be interesting to know how many people have been helped by Ask Leo in the past twenty years. It has helped and educated me many, many times. JimE

@askleonotenboom Thank you. JimE

Thanks again Leo for some good info. JimE

Thanks Leo. That's one of those things I always wondered about but "was afraid to ask". Always enjoy your topics and find them helpful. Perhaps some day you can discuss the topic of Win10 updating and then uninstalling the update right after it completes and doing it everyday if I'm not the only one with the issue. JimE

Thanks Leo! I learned something again. Always was confused about the amperage thing. JimE

More interesting and informative info Leo. Much appreciated. JimE

Rebooting works wonders on my iPhone Thanks for the info and the "unplug also" tip. JimE

Thanks for the clarification Leo. JimE

Thanks Leo. I just had a drifting NW mouse on my PC last week. A good cleaning seemed to stop the little critter from moving my cursor. Keep 'um comin'. JimE

Once again, I'm smarter because of watching your content. Thanks. JimE

Interesting! Thanks for the tip on "download" file. Was not aware. JimE

Agree! But.........my kids and grandkids think I'm living in a different era and have a heard of Trojan Horses out back. JimE

My education continues. Thanks. JimE

That was a "good" rant! JimE

How timely Leo. SSD! My laptop is five years old, can not be updated to Win11(per MS) and I have been thinking about replacing it. My only reservation is the hard drive in todays laptops. I am 80, like to use the KISS theory and do not use cloud storage and most laptops today come with very small hard drives. I prefer to be "self contained" so to speak. So the question is, what are the alternatives? Do I buy one with a small hard drive and then go through the expense of having someone replace it and I now have a useless small SSD and possible warranty violation? Can I just use one externally? Advice/Solutions??? As always, thanks for sharing the great information. JimE
3
@trei2unu Thanks. Can an external drive be configured to work the same as a default internal when it come to saving things? JimE
3
@trei2unu Thanks for the reply. Like I said previously, I grew up in an era with horse drive carts used to deliver milk door to door and TV's getting an intermittent black/white signal from a 40' antenna outside the house so I am not what I would call an electronic genius. That be said and reevaluating the question, I guess what I am asking is, can an external SSD completely replace the internal drive to a point where it could be removed? Sorry for the confusion and thanks for your input. JimE
3
@trei2unu I believe you have answered my questions. Thank you for being so helpful. Much appreciated. JimE

@easylivingsherpa Thanks.

Thanks Leo. Should one run more than one software such as Defender and Malwarebytes? Any benefit to this? Issues? JimE

Thanks Leo. That was great information, ............... but.... It didn't work for me like I was hoping. -The print screen key does not give me a notification on my screen. -I do not have a "screenshots" folder in my "pictures" folder. I currently do not use OneDrive -Did search for "screenshots" in "This PC" and get nothing. -Currently using Win10 ver 21H2(OS Build 19044.1889) -Using Google Chrome Version 104.0.5112.81 (Official Build) (64-bit) but I don't think that would matter. -The only thing I can do with it after hitting the "prtsc" button is go to Paint and paste it. It would really be useful if I could get it working as you described. Any advice? Thanks. JimE

Agree! And an 81 year old also. Thanks again Leo. JimE

Thanks Leo. Watched with interest but didn't really get to my league. At 77 I currently have a 17" laptop so I can see it.😁 My "needs" fall into where your wife's needs are but I am unwilling to spend $800 for that. Surely there must be PC laptops in the range of $400-500 that can be use for folks who just want to do email, surf the web, type letters and watch YouTube and don't do any gaming or editing. Perhaps you can shed some light on "Laptops for Simple Seniors" or "Simple Laptops for Seniors". Always enjoy your expertise and opinions. JimE

Thanks Leo. I have often wondered about that. JimE PS: How come I don't hear you say much about the lastest version of Win10 that is being rolled ouit? Keep the good stuff comin'.

Thanks Leo. The free version of Macrium Reflect will only do differential backups from what it tells me. So I do differential backups once a week. Keep in mind I use my computer for basically information and research so it is not a work tool. Been retired for 20 years. The question is, am I missing something by doing this? What I really need a backup for is my system, pictures, email and the like. Thanks. JimE

Thanks Leo. Perhaps a short vid on Windows key plus other useful key shortcuts. Always appreciate the info. JimE
