As a regular human you are not equipped to comprehend these issues, you think nothings happened and that predictions 30 years ago were wrong. They were not You also think 30 years is a long time, even ten years.   4. Hell yeah FV103 Spartan APC! Those things are badass. Shame they don't have the light recon tank version, FV107 Scimitar with its 30mm RARDEN canon. They do, of course, come with the British BV for making hot drinks and meals. They couldn't ask for a better suited vehicle.

  5. Indeed, the cost necessary to upgrade an 80s jet to get a handful of aircraft, that may no longer be able to press their mission, would be astronomical. A lot of what they learnt went into what makes the F-35 so great, it's modularity. And what they learnt about implementing said modularity is being built into NGAD (And FCAS and Tempest etc) Although FCAS et al. will be all evolution of 5th gen fighters, I suspect NGAD will be tailored for the Pacific, focusing on range, payload, stealth and sensors & effectors.

  7.  @archer1133  Apologies for this being a bit wordy. Reaction Engines primary project is the SABRE engine. The aft section is a rocket engine, fairly normal in that it's a rocket bell fed by hydrogen and oxygen pumped by turbos. Hydrogen comes from the fuel tanks. The forward section is the fancy bit, there's a turbine compressing incoming air which is the oxygen source for the rocket, not onboard fuel tanks However, they melt at Mach 5. In front of that is the magic, the pre-cooler. It takes the 1000°C incoming air and knocks it down to -150°C in 1/20th of a second, without the water in the air freezing up the cooler. It uses the liquid hydrogen to do the cooling. That gets compressed and liquified by the turbine and the heat is used to run the rocket turbos. They also have an idea to use the pre-cooler with a regular jet engine, which will allow the jet engine to run at much higher speeds. Note that while SABRE does indeed get some compression from its forward motion it doesn't rely on it. Which means unlike a ram or scram jet it can ignite and create thrust from zero speed up to Mach 5. No need for a booster.

  10.  @Del_S  exactly Most 'APCs' of the day (maybe just call them mechanised infantry vehicles or battle taxis?) Were truck or half tracks with cloth between the meat and the metal. I'll take the 10mm of steel thanks! The light machine gun conversion even gave you a mini redoubt/sponson to sit behind and poke your bren or your Vickers through. A pair of Vickers find on two of these behind a hedgerow with overlapping fuels of fire will certainly put the fear of god into any advancing infantry, especially if caught in the open life without an RPG of some kind. Designed to stop rifle rounds certainly.

I'll take 10mm of armour over nothing too! Maybe the pure battle taxi version can carry 5? 4 maybe, the engine just sits in the middle. Most of them were mobile heavy weapons platforms and artillery tractors.

  16. I think the tank in it's current form is approaching obsolescence If the armour cannot protect you when taking a hit, something needs to change. Ever increasing armour weight is a bad choice Further killing mobility and over stressing logistics chains used to transport the tank to the front Maybe it's time to ditch passive armour in return for mobility and active defences It's purpose of direct fire support during combined arms operations gets no benefit from that armour once it doesn't stop incoming fire. That armour doesn't help in the situation of 'who shots first, wins' Maybe it puts you on the back foot because low mobility makes it harder to choose your ground when trying to get that first round in on the enemy Turn it into the direct fire equivalent of the shoot-n-scoot self propelled indirect howitzers

  17. Mortar launched smart munitions that hop over buildings and top attack tanks. That's what you want mounted on a BTR. Sit it behind the house the infantry are securing. It's in cover for loading those troops if it's time to make a quick getaway.

I love this story, check it: It was initially decided to start using disposable magazines Yes, loaded at factory, uses once, dropped on floor So, they were specc'd for that, X amount of alu and y amount of spring steel, enough for one use But then, the MOD had a brilliant cost saving idea, can you guess what that was?? 🤩🤩🤩 Yes!   27. 2:45 It's more than just preserving your most elite troops. By putting green troops, currently 75% of their armed forces, into close defensive situations like Bakhmut your blooding all those new units. You quickly cycle them in and out and now every soldier has months of experience rather than the elite troops only getting slightly more experience. Now every Ukrainian soldier in that 1,000,000 men and women are battle tested and hardened. Russia's gonna think it's been fucked by a train.

  28. If there's even any Russian air defenses still standing by the time they get there. Their vaunted S-400 got knocked out, twice, by loitering munition drones and Neptune missiles. If they can field F-16s correctly configured for SEAD/DEAD missions I think the AFU will be onto a winter winner 🏆

  30.  @MGZetta  Allow me to introduce to you the concept of Newton's Third Law of Motion: "Every action has an equal and opposite reaction" Combined with laws of equivalence, we get this: A Mach 9 missile colliding with a stationary depleted uranium ball bearing is equivalent to a stationary missile being hit by a depleted uranium ball bearing traveling at Mach 9. Anti tank kinetic rounds hit at Mach 5.0. This things hits an nearly double at Mach 9.0 At these velocities the missile may as well be made of water, it will splash as the DU passes through, igniting the warhead and fuel as it passes through. The missile will fragment, surface area increases exponentially and the whole device turns into a superheated expanding cloud of burning gasses, instantly trading velocity for heat. It'll look amazing briefly And that's the end of that. 😉

  37.  @jgw9990  2? Try 4 decades. It was designed in the 80s, F-22 is 80s tech. It's the last of the monolithic avionics jets, which require everything to be ripped out and rebuilt for upgrades. F-35 is the 2 decades old jet, but the first (American) modular jets, first jet to have it's software not written in FORTRAN 🤣

  45. OK some fascinating information from the wiki. Regular jet engines, in order to not melt at high air speeds, "use heavy copper or nickel alloys, reduce pressure ratio and throttle back at higher air speeds to avoid melting" So strap on their pre-cooler and you have a jet engine that's lighter, had a higher pressure ratio and can run at full throttle at higher speeds and in denser air. That sounds useful.

  46. The US DOD is working with Reaction engines to create air breathing jet and rocket engines. They're pre-cooler quenches 1000°C air in 1/20th of a second. It's going to power their air breathing rocket And I suspect when strapped to a regular jet engine they could make hypersonic jet fighters and cruise missiles. No scramjet needed.
