  1. In fact, at the end of the war, many SS soldiers shed their uniforms because so many were being shot on site even after surrendering just because they were SS. The Russians were more likely to do so because of the destruction of their country and the allies because of what they saw at the concentration camps.

  2. Many people have commented on the effectiveness of the allied bombing campaign. I had a customer who had photo albums of reconnaissance pictures of German cities after bombing runs. There were probably 30 or so pages per album and probably 6-8 albums per box and the boxes were stacked three high, fwo deep and six long just to give yoh an idea of the volume of photographs. The cities were totally devastated. I don't care who you are that campaign had to have an effect on the populous. Imagine not knowing when you can take a shower much less drink safe water, eat a hot meal, work in a place that hasn't been flattened, sleep under a warm dry roof and get around streets filled with debris. It had to have an effect.

  10. When I was in school, history was all about dates and rote. I was always thinking that there has to be more to it than that. Why did those things happen? But that wasn't in the syllabus, so we weren't taught it. I learned on my own and glad I did.

  12. Roman bridges were built by the army. Part of your duty to the Republic as a Roman soldier was to help build public works. The soldiers were already being paid by the Roman government, it was great exercise and discipline and was part of life back then.

  21. My buddy and I both worked in the IT department for a NYS agency. When the second Gulf Oil war ended, we were discussing about how the US would not let anyone who worked for the Saddam regime work in civil service again. He thought that was good. Now, most people work in civil service jobs, no matter the government, because they are the most secure jobs (there will always be a government of some kind), and generally good pay and benefits. They just want to put food on the table like most people. I asked him, how would you feel if a foreign power took over NYS and then said that you could no longer work for the state government because you worked there under the previous state government? He demurred.

  24. @5:46 It's important to remember, and most people don't, that not all Germans were Nazis in WWII. Just as not all chinese belong to the communist party. Both the Nazis and communists are exclusive societies mostly for the elite. A lot of the common people don't even like them but are powerless to do much about it and go along with policies just to survive.

  30. I wouldn't be bragging about losing soldiers at a 80:1 ratio. There are other factors at work here such as the quality of troops and equipment and the mentality to sacrifice men instead of using men intelligently to gain strategic control.

  32. If Hollywood looked at history, then they would find a never ending supply of great stories and scripts instead of the annoying dribble that they try to pass off as entertainment now. They can't even come up with original stories. Half the movies today are lousy rewrites of past great movies and sequels.

When I went to school (I graduated high school in 1971): - World history stopped at the end of WWII. - Asians did not exist as there was no history of them. - Africa was just a bunch of European colonies made up of backward, uneducated, tribes living in huts half naked and dancing around a fire. - Americans won every war. - There was no history between the fall of the Roman Empire and the Middle ages.

  35. @TIK You are correct sir. Both were equally lacking in strategic foresight. However the German command excelled in tactical maneuvering. This made possible the idiom, win the battle lose the war.

  42. The German high command was hampered by decisions that Adolf Hitler made. Hitler was his own worst enemy. He thought of himself as a great strategist. Hitler distrusted the high command because they were of Prussian stock and he blamed them for losing WWI. So, Hitler would countermand many orders given by his generals usually involving the capture of large units of men because Hitler would not allow them to fall back to a better defensive postion. Had Hitler's generals been given free reign over the operational and tactical decisions, the war might have taken a different turn.

  48. Eisenhower was a very smart leader. He approved Market Garden because he knew if it failed, Monty was done politically and stuffed into a corner but if it succeeded, Eisenhower could take credit for the success. It was a win-win for Eisenhower.
