Which is why this corrupt crony capitalism & suharto reign made 32 years of Indonesia's journey gone to waste. Its economy is now still dominated by very vew families.
2
Not really. According to Indonesian themselves.. Suharto regime and his favoritism to Sudono Salim etc had destroyed the country for 32 years. Only few families dominating Indonesia's economy. The inequality gap in Indonesia is high because of that. FYI, Sudono Salim (Lim Siew Liong) was involved in corruption scandal with Suharto in the 1950s, when Suharto became a commander of Diponegoro Division in Central Java. Suharto was reprimanded by his superior General Ahmad Yani, because of the power abuse. But then 1965 coup happened, Ahmad Yani was murdered, and Suharto came into full power in 1970s.
2
Yep. Except any further damage was prevented thanks to 1998 protest which ousted Suharto from his absolute power. Meanwhile, at least Russian oligarchy is held by Russians themselves not immigrants or anything.. so it's a mixed feeling.
2
Populous country doesn't always mean = positive. Unemployment is high & currently Indonesia our country is still ridden with economic inequality gap problem. Even US & China being the most populous countries are having difficulty in managing its demography.
2
@devatsdb7 thanks to foreign propaganda, especially by Gaddafi (Gaddafi backed Aceh separatists & Peruvian Shining Path rebels).. Aceh separatists thinks it is entitled, it thinks it contributes more for the country (merasa paling berjasa sendiri).. but they forgot that other region: Siak Sultanate, Yogyakarta Sultanate, East Java, Bali, Molucca, North Sumatera etc were also contributing to Indonesia's independence efforts.
2
Zaydan Alfariz Brunei doesn't have inequality gap so wide and its economy is not dominated by certain ethnic of immigrant descendants.
2
Haily Rizzo What genocide? 1998 riot was not even a genocide and not all Indonesians approved that. It was an attempt by Suharto to divert the blame after his failure in preventing 1997 crisis, but failed to widespread and only happened in Jakarta. The victims of 1998 riot also include native Indonesians like the protesters from Trisakti University and activists like Widji Thukul. But of course you gonna ignore that. US/China/Russian narratives are always forced on smaller countries' throat.. according to you, only Indonesians are exclusively at fault.
2
@marsilio4328 We treat the descendants of the immigrants (Arab, Chinese, Indians) better than China treated aboriginal Formosans & Uighurs, Americans treated Native Americans, or Russians treated Ukrainians & Circassians.. just saying. Is there any Uighur & non CCP member became a minister in P.R.China? Like Kwik Kian Gie (Chinese) or Ali Alatas (Arab) became minister in Indonesia? Nooope.
2
2
My previous comment literally says we admit that 1965-1966 was horrible, 1998 incident was horrible. How dare you say Indonesians are being denial? However, the context of those incidents are being steered by Chinese supremacists as remotely just a case of "Indonesia being racist toward Chinese". Not really. 1965-1966 victims are largely Native Indonesians who were accused of being communist sympathizers and the 1998 riot also saw many Indonesians non-Chinese became victims of Suharto regime including the missing activists.
2
Except India doesn't have Arab or Chinese immigrants which makes their social situation even more complicated.
2
@waleed8530 except Jews were not as expansive as Chinese. Chinese conquered other land and even made other people displaced (Uighurs, Nanman people, Aboriginal Formosans).. while Jews instead of conquering & gained more land in the ancient times, lost their homeland.
2
More interested in the Military Industry Complex of Soviet-Union/Russia & China.
2
@The0ldg0at Ah CCP bot. OK.
2
Southeast Asia? You mean Malaya only (both Malaya & Hong Kong were under British administration). Indonesia's film industry was initiated by their own people.. especially those with American/Dutch education like Usmar Ismail who produced Indonesian noir like "Lewat Djam Malam" (After the Curfew, 1954).
2
@eltontan4340 But Southeast Asia doesn't mean Malaya/Singapore only.. how about Philippines film history? Or Burma? How about Thailand? Or how about Indonesia? Not all of them were funded by foreigner like Hollywood production studios or HK's Shaw Brothers.
2
@eltontan4340 Yes. I would say that you are travelling to France and Switzerland.. not Europe (it doesn't cover Southeastern Europe e.g. Greece, Croatia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania or Eastern Europe e.g. Poland & Lithuania)
2
@eltontan4340 That's like the recent case of Lada Smith "Cleopatra", assuming the whole Africa = black people. Since Egypt is part of Africa, so she thinks that. While in reality Africa is diverse.. not just comprising of black people or arabs only. Europe is diverse. Southeast Asia is diverse.
2
Also the "using local name policy" is not just in Indonesia or in P.R.China only. For example during Ottoman times many Armenians, Greeks, Albanians, and Bosnians were Turkicized. Or like Thailand where it was obligated for non-ethnic Thai (including ethnic Chinese in Thailand) to use Thai names.
2
@ramumanickam1643 Except I'm not a muslim. I'm a nonmuslim. Yes we received discrimination, but Chinese behavior of being unloyal and being loyal either to Dutch, then American, or then currently to P.R.China made us further be stigmatized by the majority and further discriminated in society.. we are even more being perceived as unloyal.
2
@rainz4599 Your situation is less worse than the Christians in Pakistan, low caste Hindus in India, Tibetans/Uighurs/Catholics of China in P.R.China or Aboriginal Taiwanese during Ming-Qing Dynasty, Native Americans in USA, Kurds in Turkey, or Ukrainians during Stalin's rule. Indonesia has racism but nowhere as severe. In fact, Indians, Chinese, Arabs in Indonesia can hold important positions in politics and economy.
2
@rainz4599 Narasi negara besar AS, Rusia, China selalu memojokkan Indonesia.
2
The policy of making ethnic Chinese to change their name with local name actually make them easier to blend to local population (benefitting them). Remember, Thailand already had the same policy: urging non Thai (including the ethnic chinese) to use Thai names.
2
@hcdtrs9684 So before you criticize Indonesia.. ask China about the forced sinicization toward non Han Chinese, ask why Thai forced non-Thai to use Thai name, ask Americans why they urged Italian and Hispanic immigrants to abandon their culture and anglicized their name.
2
Except Adani is a native Indian.
1
aran john Even Chinese in Malaysia is allowed to speak their own language.. but why Uighur not allowed to speak their own language?
1
I thank Fairchild Semiconductor, they invested in Indonesia by establishing a manufacturing facility in Indonesia in 1973. Alas, the Suharto's crony capitalism & chronic corruption failed the country's economy. That and Fairchild was being under internal problems (later it was sold to National Semiconductor). So the Fairchild Semiconductor moved out from the country in 1985.
1
star grow All design by USA/Russia/China in the cold war. These big powers are always cornering smaller countries like Indonesia with their narratives, as if only smaller countries who are at fauit. *MEANWHILE*: Cambodia massacre for example happened because of Khmer Rouge 1976-1978 was backed by China; Pinochet purge toward communists were backes by US; the Holodomor massacre to Ukrainians was happened because of Soviet Russia.
1
How can you be so ignorant when you already knew that Indonesia's economy is dominated by conglomerates, leftover of Suharto's (New Order) regime.
1
At least Korean chaebol are held by Korean families.. not Arab, Indian, Chinese, or any foreign/descendants of immigrants family.
1
@gundarvarr1024 Like whom? Mention a Korean chaebol who is of Chinese/Japanese descendant??
1
If you are an Indonesian, lu harusnya tau kalo Sudono Salim & Bob Hasan korupsi dgn Soeharto sejak 1950an, jauh sebelum Soeharto berkuasa.
1
1
At least Indonesians admit their dark past. Meanwhile Chinese supremacists always being denial about the poor treatment toward Tibetans and the dark past involving wiping out the Aboriginal Formosans.. and the Tiananmen Square Incident 1989
1
Note: Etnis Tionghoa dan Timur Asing berada di strata di atas Pribumi, diijinkan bersekolah sampai taraf SMA (HBS), dan diperbolehkan bekerja dengan Belanda misal sebagi supplier, pegawai pemerintahan (ambtenaar), jaksa, administrator perkebunan, pemungut pajak (terkhususnya dilakukan oleh para Kapitan China), dll
1
@baron7199 Lha iya, Indonesia punya jejak sejarah kelam.
1
Ironically you chinese have quite racist remark toward non chinese
1
Kinda ironic that Suharto used to favor Chinese businessmen like Roby Tjahjadi (who was involved in car smuggling business) than the local honest Police General Hoegeng Iman Santoso (whom Suharto had deposed after Hoegeng tried to reveal the car smuggling business in Jakarta).
1
LOL no. India doesn't have its economy dominated by immigrant descendants whether it is Chinese, Arabs, or anything.
1
Except Bavaria's were owned by the Germans themselves not foreigners. Crony capitalism was bad because of Suharto and his corrupt friend Salim from the beginning..
1
More like kleptocracy than capitalism like in EU
1
Zaydan Alfariz Not really. Nowhere as severe as Indonesia: HM Sampoerna, Salim Group, Astra, Asian Agri, Kawan Lama Group (Ace Hardware), Kompas Group, MNC Group, Djarum Group, Gudang Garam, Gramedia.. LOL all sectors you're even more f**ked up.
1
Zaydan Alfariz Corruption case also done by immigrant descendants. Chinese: Robby Tjahjadi's smuggling activities (this is the man who made honest Police General Hoegeng fired from his position), Sudono Salim & Bob Hasan deals with Suharto, Edy Tansil, Harun Masiku, Meikarta problem, Djoko Chandra, Hendra Kurniawan, etc. Arab: Nazarudin, Hesham Al Warouq (Century Bank), etc.
1
Zaydan Alfariz Not in all sectors as in case with Indonesia, its sector is dominated by either descendants of Chinese, Suharto's offsprings, or Indian immigrants. Being an absolute monarchy too, Brunei could kick out that companies if the Monarch is willing.
1
@radizanakiz666 and chinese also makes narratives.. make "bad guy" "good guy" polarization.. saying Indonesians being racist.. saying 1998 was an ethniccleansing.. saying things like "without Chinese, Indonesia won't be as thriving as it is today" blablablabla
1
Zaydan Alfariz Aceh was not the only one who donated gold for Indonesia's independence efforts. Siak Sultanate & Yogyakarta Sultanate also donated large amount of cash from their treasury. Also, remember the biggest battle ever occured during Independence War was in East Java (Surabaya).. they paid with blood. Life is more valuable than gold and they sacrificed their life.
1
MSS China was responsible in arming the Communist Party of Indonesia with "Chung" rifle (SKS license made by P.R.China) donation (for "Angkatan Kelima"). And enabled Khmer Rouge to be in power.. causing mass killings in Cambodia between 1976-1978 (which was stopped by Vietnam, the Vietnam got invaded hy China in 1979)
1
@malakatan3235 Western propaganda? LOL I'm an Indonesian, non-muslim. It's unloyal ethnic Chinese pro P.R.China like you who makes other minorities in Indonesia got stigmatized & persecuted even more.
1
@malakatan3235 LOL and yet you enjoy lavish life in Indonesia. You are allowed to do normally dude. What a parasite: living in Indonesia while hating Indonesia too. Now I ask you did China ever admit what they did on Aboriginal Formosans? Uighurs? Catholics in China? Tibetans?
1
@franktoh3041 Ah typical Chinese chauviniist, you always think you are never wrong.
