The USN uses the Mk 48 ADCAP or whatever its called now. Back in 1982, its worth remembering that Conks was carrying Tigerfish , precursor to Spearfish; as well as old Mk 8`s but used the older weapons for several reasons. You can only find a submarine if it makes the right noises or they screw up, or find themselves in shallow waters where they cannot go deep after an attack. Pretty much any modern Submarine can decide to remain undetected if it really wants to. I`m not knocking Astute or the 774`s but I have to laugh at some of the more twilight zone media claims. Park an SSK up if you know a CSG is heading your way and it can kill a Carrier, it isn't fast enough nor can they go deep enough to escape or evade the now very pissed off fleet they just hit, but they are more expendable than a carrier, especially in Chinese hands where they will be more likely to go for the guts and glorious death malarkey than Pusser.

Lastly, take a look at the ranges Conqueror took up to sink the Belgrano. Mk 8`s yes but if you want a kill you get in close.
1
All everybody is saying is that its a mistake to take the SSK threat lightly, it may be a fatal one if defence planners turned a blind eye to the threat. Heavyweight torpedo`s may have a 60 nm range in a straight line but thats not why they have that range capability, they can conduct search patterns which involve maneuver, that uses up fuel and range.
1
Nobody fires live Torpedo`s at a target at 60nm range, it doesn't happen and never will its too dangerous for friendly shipping. The Astute can do what every other submarine can do at the right depth under the right conditions in the Atlantic in the right sound channel. I forget the correct term. It may have a theoretical capability based on the characteristics of its sonar systems but doesn't mean it can actually do it. An SSK with AIP can sit there quietly or on batteries without being detected until it shoots. Its been done. Try detecting a submarine running on electric motors, good luck with that. If an enemy has lots of SSKs they will not mind sacrificing one to take out a carrier, because as you say, as soon as it fires a spread it will get chased down by the ASW screen. One Torpedo CAN sink a carrier, its why the USN has invested so much in active torpedo defenses that travel down the wake to intercept wake homers. One Torpedo can break the keel if the CVN is having a bad day. Also, he CVF was NOT built from scratch for survivability in terms of armour protection as a prime driver for the design, it was built to carry on operating with battle damage by having a lot of redundancy incorporated into the design. It was too expensive to go the US CVN route, ie extreme durability and resistance to multiple hits from inbounds.
1
A Torpedo is the one weapon that can sink a CVN, and the hardest to avoid.

2 Billion pounds, that is the cost to convert to cats and traps, it was always a none starter for me and we were always going to buy the F-35 B, the brief period when some barked bout the F-35C was just bean Counters getting a short lived hard on, nothing to do with capability.
1
..and 5 months later, the Pound is still depressed so imports still cost us more that includes defence equipment like the P-8, hope we got a fixed price contract!
1
Pusser always gets shafted yeah we know!
1
Has to have a hatch it's too delicate to mount outside.
1
One standard RPG hit would probably disable the lot of them. Wonder how Iron Hand can cope with top attacks from an elevated position from say a block of flats straight down? Trenchcoat looks a better system.
1
Tanks have a degree of EMP hardening designed in as does most military equipment. From rangefinders to power units to aircraft.
1
Didn't they get appliqué on the glacis in Iraq? Didn't work apparently.
1
As long as you have good AC the crews will be fine. Colour makes no difference to an IR signature index unless the chemical properties in each paint colour are different and have a different absorption profile.
1
Greeny we are leaving the EU not NATO ffs. EU security Ops and strategy use the same logistics footprint , Comms infrastructure and stocks as NATO anyway, Even the same personnel ffs.
1
Dumbest comment I've ever read.
1
Thats why Russians earn 2 pence an hour.
1
We are not ready for squat. thats what decades of neglect and apathy does.
1
@bubba842 TOR M1 equivalent.
1
@bubba842 Its more like a TOR M1 equivalent.
1
Biggest mistake was not adding a proximity fuze from the start. Bonkers.
1
They are just saying he’s an ace pilot not “an Ace.”
1
Broski Snowski like Kosovo and the Gulf wars.
1
@Tuhoeterra what about their jamming capabilities?
1
@lmao.3661 No worries.
1
He also wants to expand the surface fleet......
1
@jonathanwilcox7318 fantastic job I hope you are enjoying your time on the aircraft!
1
@davidhouseman4328 Sorry I meant the C model.
1
@kcimb I would love to see that! Is the larger wing area noticeable?
1
@kcimb Oh I dont doubt the capability, there just isnt much in the way of footage of them doing it.
1
@kcimb Thanks, I am thinking of conventional landings in the event of a lift system failure. I have never seen a B model land conventionally as yet.
1
I have a question I cant seem to find an answer to. Can the F-35 B land like a conventional fighter on a concrete runway ie without operating the Lift Fan?
1
As many have said, Flyco is for aircraft handling, the other island is to manage the ship.
1
@Elfin4 I have nothing more to add really....
1
@Elfin4 Again, Chinese whispers and Daily Fail propaganda are irrelevant, Manifesto`s are relevant as are conference motions "if" they make into into the policy unit and manifesto. The manifesto committment from the Labour Party is to keep Trident, do not forget the Union support Labour needs at Barrow and every other site supporting the industry.
1
@Elfin4 I am no fan of Corbyn, but he does want the RN to have more surface units ie escorts, nor can he reverse Labour Party policy which is to maintain Trident he has already accepted this. A Labour leader cannot be a dictator, policy and the manifesto is a collective responsibility. The Unions dont want to shed jobs in the Nuke industry.
1
It is Tory governments that have hollowed out our armed forces.....
1
@willmorrell488 At £1 Billion per ship, not likely to happen.
1
Not at all, the F-35B is the perfect carrier aircraft for UK PLC. Think "jointery".
1
SVRL and Bring Back....
1
You`d have a point if she sailed anywhere on ops on her own.
1
@davidhouseman4328 Yep, and it will be capable of STOVL Ops in my opinion. There are lots of advantages. I have seen no compelling evidence why we would turn away from this design.
1
@davidhouseman4328 Too expensive David, ive seen a figure of £2.1 Billion for conversion and that`s just the hull without aircraft, then you have to find a company which still makes steam CATs unless you want EMALS. it`s too late we have committed to the B model purchase what would be the point of the A model? The B model and STOVL Ops are perfect for us when you look at joint Ops with the Crabs.
1
@davidhouseman4328 These ships will never be converted to CATOBAR.
1
Not a great idea on a low vis aircraft :P
1
Go back to RT, thats where dopes are better appreciated.
1
Paid for how??
1
Poor old Mikey......
1
@kcimb The S1 seemed surpsingly easy to spoof via the IAF but I am not surpsised they are excellent exponents of that art.
1
That was the analogue signal era :P
1
@kcimb Only about 15% of their equipment was sourced from the Allies its a bit of a myth actually.
