  42. I'm a middle school math (pre-algebra) teacher in my 60's, so I was particularly interested in your take on high school. Its really quite interesting how we have arrived in todays K-12 education focus of getting every student into college after high school graduation. One of the reasons why so many young people are drowning in college debt is that college education has been oversold. This has also led to the tremendous increase in college tuition prices because there was too much demand. Meanwhile the still important jobs of the trades and jobs that require skills with your hands have been overlooked to the point that there is often no one available to do the work. I would say that one of the tragedies of modern youth is that by and large they all want jobs that allow them to play games on computers all day long - they are addicted to their electronic pacifiers (smartphones). Young adults are extremely resistant towards any job in which they might physically sweat. All that said, one of the big reasons for broad based academic subjects in school is because we have no idea what the future holds. When I was doing my high school math I used a slide rule (an analog mechanical computer, look it up), calculators and personal computers were still a couple of years away. The future is certain to hold advances and changes and new types of jobs previously unimagined. You may be happy to know that one of the ways I reinforce the idea of negative numbers is to introduce my students to financing big ticket purchases and basic net worth financial statements of assets and liabilities.
