  1. What is with the negative comments. Rainman Ray does a great job diagnosing vehicles. You can tell his experience by how he uses his testing equipment. The results are not always correct, and he is able to decipher from the results to get him to the correct solution. This guy is very good at what he does !

  2. The hot start issue may be because the timing is too high. Maybe put a light on it. Excessive timing will also cause overheating

  11. This is how I want MY mechanic to treat my car. I want to know if there's something wrong with it. My local garage is honest, but it's a poor area, and the mindset is "cheapest way to make it safe" - which is correct for the lion's share of their customers. I went in with a worn out column shift on my Ranger, and was told "safe for $70 but more if you want it to feel like new". I told them I wanted the works, and got the $70 fix - the mechanic was so proud that he's saved me money over the estimate!

  20. Well, at least it looks like he takes care of this vehicle. Getting things looked at when they start making noise saves you down the road. When you have a lot of rattling and banging, you can’t pinpoint the problem without your mechanic having to check everything, meaning more billable shop hours.   23. A bad ignition coil can generate enough electronic noise that it "swamps out" the signal from the cam sensor. Since the engine ignores the cam sensor below 400 RPM it will start, but after it starts you'll lose the injectors when it switches over to using the cam sensor. (Below 400 RPM the injectors fire in pairs off the crank sensor, but above 400 they fire individually off the cam sensor). Since the engine is a "wasted spark" engine the ignition never uses the cam sensor, thats why it would run on brake cleaner. Unfortunately on most vehicles the only way to diagnose this issue is through the process of elimination. The only "hint" I've noticed is that BEFORE the engine starts dying , the cruise control starts acting weird since the electronic noise from the faulty coil starts interfering with its ability to measure engine RPM....So always ask the customer if the cruise control works.

  40. As an "old school" mechanic, I'm 50 and have turned wrenches since I was 8-ish. I've been trained from NHRA Pro-stock engine builders, to BF Goodrich, to more oil companies to list. All of it hands on without stepping one foot into a classroom. NO, I didn't attend any of those "we'll make you a mechanic" schools. No, none of this makes me special. Just wanting to get my point across that I am a real mechanic. I'm proud to be a mechanic and to have put my kids through college on a mechanics paycheck. GIG'EM AGGIES!! ANYWAY!! It's really cool to watch someone of Ray's caliber and integrity. OUTSTANDING work Sir!! Hopefully others will learn from his example!! Lord knows we need more like him within our industry. Ray, I was thinking of you yesterday when I was removing the fuel injectors from my 4.8 Litre Silverado to clean them ( yes I used new o-rings😊) The passenger side was fairly easy, but the drivers side was a PITA because of all the hoses and wiring harnesses😲 I was cursing a bit ( ok a lot😆), so I give you a lot of respect for maintaining your cool when things don't always come off like you think they will. Anyway, my old Silverado is running much better now with no trouble codes😁👍. Thanks man for being an awesome tech and human being.

  42. Way back in the day, I was driving up I-85 in NC, when the 12 year old upper radiator hose on my 87 Subaru wagon decided to develop a 3 inch long split right in the middle of the hose. Fortunately, my guardian angel was looking out for me, and this happened just a mile or so before there was an exit with a truck stop. Of course, said truck stop didn't have parts for an '87 Subaru. But they did have duct tape and hose clamps. I wrapped close to a half roll of duct tape over the split, and then 4 or 5 large hose clamps on top of the duct tape. Refilled the system with water, and then started the slow 30 mile drive home on secondary roads. After about 10 miles, going thru the first sizeable town, up pops a NAPA store. And by the grace of the fates, they had an upper radiator hose in stock. Swapped out the radiator hose and refilled the system with some 50/50 mix in their parking lot, then made it the rest of the way home. And the next day, I replaced ALL the other hoses associated with the cooling system.
