  9. Important note for the beginning of the story: in these times, men served in army for 25 (twenty five) years. By the time they get back home, there could be no home left. A lot of stories start with that premise. That also explains why the soldier stayed in this village in the end - there isn't much to return to 25 years later.

  18. My other favorite scene from Player Piano is when the traveling Mystic goes to a Barber Shop. The Barber talks about how the barber robot was made: A hairdresser was worried about the increasing automation, so much so that he had nightmares about barber-robots. He relaxed his mind by journaling about how the robot couldn't possibly perform X or Y task. Then he would have another nightmare, but this time the robot was built to perform the barbers task. The man would then think of other tasks the robot couldn't do, and the nightmares grew increasingly more complex. Eventually, the man realized that he had dreamed up a thoroughly perfect barber-robot, and sold the design for millions.

  19. I grew up with the Greek myths as a bedtime stories. I like the version where Typhon is a giant dragon and Zeus chases him down to Sicily, defeats him and crushes him under the Mount Etna. That's why the mountain spews fire and smoke :)

  26. The conversation here is great! I'm glad issues of imperialism and the way it turns people against each other is being discussed! My aim here was to point out the other side of that as well, which is that no empire in history, be it the Roman, the Mongol or the British, is solely the work of the people who get to name it. They are often the ones we write about when we write history but that overlooks the contribution and sacrifice (willing or unwilling) of so many, whose efforts are essential to these vast entities. -JP

  32. This is basically why I love Jane Austen. She gets written off and underestimated even today because people don't see past the surface of her work. To me, Sense and Sensibility is about determining what we value most and about growing up, emotionally. Pride and Prejudice's moral is to be willing to change your mind and laugh at yourself. Mansfield Park is a morality play that cautions against people who choose appearances and status over what actually matters. Emma is about humbling the privileged. Persuasion is about the advantages of a mature mind. And Northanger Abbey basically pokes fun at girls who take Gothic romance too seriously.

  33. If you look at the Brothers Gracci series, you'll see that breaking social norms is what killed the Roman Republic. Tyrants wouldn't step down. Tribunes would be attacked. Those things which were protected by social norms and not hard law were essential to the government, and taken advantage of for shortsighted power. Seriously, watch the series, and you'll see it in action.

  36. Hey, you forgot the best part of the tasks. The tasks weren't all given at once. They were made up on the spot. Not only were they made up, but they were told from a bronze pithos in the floor that the king hid in because he was terrified of every single monster and artifact heracles brought into the poor guy's castle. Oh, and the tasks weren't based on time. They were based on number. There were supposed to be 7. This poor king, shivering in his bunker at this almighty demigod had to tell heracles that his tasks didn't count because he got help not once, not twice, but three times.

There’s an AMAZING romance manga called “Even If You Slit My Mouth”, that centers the Kuchisake Onna (Miroku) and how she falls in love with a human (who is absolutely in love and dedicated to her). It talks about so many other urban legends, their co-existence with humans, and how an urban legend only dies once people stop believing in them.

So he not only restored his honor but could also legitimately say "I built a city and made the English pay for it".
