  3. Love your take on topics regarding EVs and renewable energy. We downsized in 2012 to smaller home, eliminated the new natural gas Furnace/Water Heater, and replaced both with electric heat pump and heat pump water heater. We have never regretted that decision. We also added 13.2 kWh solar PV system complemented with two PW2's in 2018, which enable us to operate independent of grid for ~9 months of the year in Edmonds, WA. We also produced 350% of our electricity needs for all electric home last year, which included charging two Tesla's (MS and M3), and exported >50% of our excess electricity back to grid.

  5. Over 15 years ago, I tried a portable induction cooktop and was so impressed that I bought an induction stove that lasted 10 years until a circuit board went bad. I'm now on my second induction stove and would never go back. Fast, safe, responsive, and awesome.

  7. I visited six years ago. Setting foot inside the Sagrada feels like being transported into some kind of mythical fantasy land. Something that has to be experienced in person to fully understand. It's an amazing blend of outside the box architecture and modern art that was ahead of its time. Great storytelling in regards to Gaudi as I was not aware of much of his bio. If I had one very very minor critique of this video it's that the end of the video didn't live up to the rest of the video especially the beginning. The beginning starts with a beautifully panned shot accompanied by charming music while the end features the host trying to talk over traffic and feels more like I watched the end of a vlog rather than a documentary. I realize that's a totally subjective opinion but I still give this video an A+ because the overall quality and thought put in are top notch like every TBDV video.

There is only ONE huge difference between Tesla and all the other motor car companies in the USA and Europe, which is Tesla is creating a better future for all of us while all of the other motor car companies are only working for more money in the pockets of their board members and stockholders and nothing else, nothing else. There is a huge difference in ethical behaviour.

  21. We are 1 year into having solar panels, and it has been fully worth it. We live in New England, and have only east/west facing panels, but we got a beefy system before Tesla insisted on selling their batteries (so we do not have batteries at present, would consider for a future project). Anyway, in our first year we had essentially service fee bills ($5-$15) from the months of March through September, and that is before our state payment. We produced 14.2 mWh for the year (and weren't hooked into the grid until late Jan 2021). Even with 3-4 months of low solar capture (the winter) it's been worth doing and I think will pay for itself in about 3-4 more years. We run a small farm so we use basically 2x the amount a regular home would. We'd wanted to for years. So glad we did finally. ETA we have also been in our house almost 15 years with no immediate plans to move. Financially we couldn't have done it earlier, but it's a nice plus for the RE market if we do have to participate in it sometime.

  23. I have visited Lahaina quite a few times. It was a pretty, historic town with a lot of old timber buildings. Given the climate, the fire risk might have reasonably seemed remote. However, unusual circumstances prevailed to create the firestorm where radiant heat tragically incinerated everything. Outside of war such devastation is unusual. Hopefully the town will be rebuilt acknowledging its history but making it safer and better.

  28. I still object to nuclear being a stop gap to other energy solutions. For that can only be true if it's a stop gap to fusion. If anything, it should be the other way around, renewables being the stop gap to better nuclear. In the long term, nuclear has more ecological benefits since it doesn't need as much space and can be used to produce huge amount of power. This can be used to power thing like hydroponics and vertical farming, allowing use to return agricultural land and land used by renewables to nature.

  29. Great content. I think it would definitely add to the quality of your videos to use metric units rather than imperial. Imperial units could still be overlaid for those who have a harder time getting their head around the SI and help them build an instinctive sense of it. The US will never get rid of the imperial system if people keep using it in educational materials. Help make a difference!

  30. One thing that is promising about this design is that it isn't that complicated. It definitely isn't as easy to manufacture as the traditional design, but I don't see anything in there that couldn't be cast or injection molded. It seems like the $5000 price tag isn't going to be the price forever, right now they can charge that much because they have no competition, but I suspect that similar designs will soon offer similar benefits at much lower prices, and they will bring the price down.

  34. Re: Your regenerative brakes request, it just isn’t really worth it on a bike. This is because with an ebike with a BB mounted motor you’d need additional hardware for the regen, and there isn’t sufficient mass in the system (bike + rider) to get enough energy back to offset the additional weight you’d be accelerating the rest of the time. Regen braking is possible on some hub drive motors, but as you pointed out hub drives have quite a few disadvantages when it comes to how the bike handles and rides. The other issues is that if you are a confident rider you don’t actually have to brake very often at all, so you’d recover very little energy on the average ride.

  40. My wife and I bought a Bolt as soon as they were available in our state. We are really happy about the purchase and have owned the car for nearly two years now. I haven't had a chance to drive the Model3 yet for comparison, but the Bolt has plenty of torque and is certainly fun to drive. We primarily chose to buy it over the Tesla because it was cheaper, available immediately, was a hatchback, and Tesla's spartan interior design is not for me (I'm a button and knobs kind of guy).We haven't even charged at a public charge station yet and are only using the 120v outlet in our garage. Though I should add that we also kept my '02 manual Celica for long distance trips, but it sees very little use these days. Really there have only been a couple of times that we felt restricted by the charge limitations of the Bolt, the 200+ mi range has been more than enough for our driving habits.  We don't even charge it to 100% every night and in the summers we see closer to 300 mi range.So far the car has been a very reliable. I love letting friends drive it around a bit and everyone likes the tech and how fun it is and most are surprised to learn that you can literally charge from any 120v outlet anywhere and how low maintenance/reliable electrics are (including the battery packs).My wife and I are glad we chose the Bolt over the Tesla but we would highly recommend both to anyone considering a new car, let alone an electric. For those who are concerned about range, please do your self a favor and just buy Chevy's Volt. I personally think the Volt better represents the future of transportation with it's zero emission, reliable and efficient 100% electric drivetrain, but the added benefit of a small onboard combustion engine to generate electricity for the electric motors when you need to drive further than the 50+ mi range of its small battery pack.

  42. Yes used panels are the way to go as many used panels have a lot of life on them and upcycling is another great way to reduce our carbon footprint. Used panels really makes sense for the first type of green $$. I have been using my used panels for three years and haven't had problems with them so far. Keep up the good work we love to see more of these types of projects.

  45. Hi Brian and Ricky, I met both of you at Fully Charged Vancouver last September. What do you think about how Elon seems to be attacking the Tesla base? Tesla has increased the Model 3 by $9000 in Canada starting February 1st. Oddly, on the same day, Trump threatened to saddle Canada with 25% Tariffs. I was a huge fan of Tesla, but now that Elon is throwing salutes from "his heart," not so much. Great company, very poor international optics. Love my Tesla Y, but will soon trade-in for a Ford Lightning to try and wash some of the bad vibes Elon is sharing. Unfortunately, in the long term, if Elon doesn't move on, I don't really see a future for Tesla.
